Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk

I bought the latest version of Time Capsule with 2TB disk, but used it as the wireless router primarily. I was able to move some pictures from my Windows PC to its HDD and can browse the pictures via my Macbook Air. I just tried to setup the Time Machine 1st time, and found it out the "Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk" message after I tried to click the Time Machine from the launch pad. I could not find the discussion of the same topic and would like to get help quickly. Thanks a lot.

I don't quite understand the steps Lite Beam described, because I am new to Mac. Is it possible to describe steps so that a beginner can follow? Thanks.

I never used TM to backup files to TC. Since TC is connect to my PC, the TC HDD is shown as another HDD on PC. So, I copied pictures to TC. I remember I was able to launch TM and turn on / off TM when I played around. I had no need to backup my Mac, since there is no files on it.

I did send a message along with URL of our discussion to Apple as feedback. No response is received, and not sure what they will do. May be I should be more patient ...

I have the same error message with a local disk that has a new Backup made by Mavericks. The disk is mounted but the console log shows a fat bug in restoring from Time machine backups on Mavericks

29/10/13 11:07:08,748 Finder[35591]: Error enumerating (null): The file “Backups.backupdb” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it.

It is my backup, nobody else on my Mac! I notice the whole Backups.backupdb folder is owned root:wheel

After this command I re-mounted the disk and then I could restore from backup

sudo chgrp -R staff Backups.backupdb/

Thanks!

I had the same problem with a clean install of Mavericks and a brand spanking new external Seagate GoFlex Firewire 3T drive. The initial backup went well except one thing -- I couldn't even Enter Time Machine let alone restore anything.

After reading your post, I checked permissions on the Time Machine partition --- and the whole shebang was owned by root. But rather than use the Terminal command line you posted, I used the Get Info panel to change the permissions for all the items on the disk so that "staff" had read/write access.

And Time Machine rewarded me by backing the whole thing up again. At least now I can Enter Time Machine and restore.

I wonder how many folks haven't tried to Enter Time Machine to see if it is really working yet?

Thanks again - GetRealBro
