Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk

I bought the latest version of Time Capsule with 2TB disk, but used it as the wireless router primarily. I was able to move some pictures from my Windows PC to its HDD and can browse the pictures via my Macbook Air. I just tried to setup the Time Machine 1st time, and found it out the "Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk" message after I tried to click the Time Machine from the launch pad. I could not find the discussion of the same topic and would like to get help quickly. Thanks a lot.

I need to mention the followings:

  • I upgraded the latest OS X Marvericks few days ago.
  • The error message appears after I click the Time Machine icon, the screen background moved down and back to normal, and the finder window showed up along with the error message.
  • The Time Machine utility window (I saw it on Apple's website) never showed up
  • I read http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14170?viewlocale=en_US, but not much helpful. However, it indicates Time Machine has various issues with new OS X. I hope I am wrong.
  • Should the Time Capsule settings be changed? If so, what changes should I make? Should it be restarted so that the Time Machine can see it?

try manually mounting the TC disk..

Certainly first step is always a reboot.

Then do a full network restart. .. correct order modem.. then TC.. then computers.

Then manually mount the TC.

In finder in the top menu.. Go.. Conect to Server.

Type in

AFP://TCname or AFP://10.0.1.1 (where you substitute actual TC name for TCname.. or the actual IP for the default IP that I have used).

Once the disk is mounted then TM should be able to use it.

No luck factory reset the TC and then redo the setup.. plug the computer into the TC by ethernet if possible.

Thanks for the quick answer. I followed your instruction and did the followings:

  1. turned off power for both cable modem and TC
  2. turned on power to cable modem to establish the connection with ISP
  3. turned on power to TC and saw the green light was on
  4. rebooted the Macbook Air
  5. launched the finder and go to "Go" menu, then clicking the "Connect to Server"
  6. typed "afp://10.0.1.1" as the "Server Address"
  7. clicked "+" button
  8. clicked "connect" and heard a light sound
  9. launch the TC from launch pad and found the same error.
  10. I also found the HD name as "Macintosh HD" from the information using the Disk Utility, and tried "afp://Macintosh HD" as the server address, the result is the same after repeating the step 7 - 9.

It seems that I have to the factory reset to TC and setup everything again. I don't like to do it because it affects many devices attached to it, including phones, iPad, AV, printer, etc. Few more questions:

  • Is "afp://10.0.1.1" always the default address for TC HD? how do I find the TC IP for sure?
  • I can still see the files on TC HDD, using Macbook Air. Does it indicate the computer and TC HDD is somehow connected? If so, why is the HDD mounting still a problem?
  • Do I have to prepare to setup TC again for each OS X upgrade? Is this something Apple design should improve?
  • Is there another way to make the TC work with Time Machine, instead of reset TC to factory settings and redo the whole thing?

Thanks

Your problem might be too complicated for me.

It sounds like something is wrong with the upgrade that caused TM to fail.

Going back over the whole discussion.. explain futher what this means.

The Time Machine utility window (I saw it on Apple's website) never showed up

Can you open TM preferences directly from preferences?

I jumped to wrong conclusion that the problem was the disk mounting.. that is normally why you get the error about TM cannot access the backup drive. It looks like your TC is mounted ok, just the TM has gone stupid and now lost where it is supposed to backup.

Let me suggest you reset TM following the instructions here.

A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

Tell us if that fails, because i will need to look up some more serious methods of getting TM running again.

Can you try verify of the backups... hold the option key when you click on the TM icon? You should see the option to verify in the list.

Apple leaving out ethernet is such a pain.. I would put high on my list of stuff to buy is a thunderbolt to ethernet dongle.. cf some other thunderbolt accessories are really expensive but this one is not bad.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response.

When I search the basic TM topics, I see a picture of TM at http://support.apple.com/kb/VI29 once it is launched. In my case, I never see it. Instead, the screen background moves down & up, the Finder is launched, then the error message shows up. That the reason I wrote the statement "The Time Machine utility window (I saw it on Apple's website) never showed up" Sorry I did not explain it clearly. Hope now it is clear to you.

By the way, I found the IP address of TC is indeed 10.0.1.1 via AirPort Utility.

I'll read more from the line you provided and try whatever suggested. I'll update you later. Thanks a lot.

What happens when you open TM in Preferences.. not from the icon. I am guessing nothing happens either.

In that case the upgrade has messed up TM.

The command line access to TM can help.

http://www.macworld.com/article/2033804/control-time-machine-from-the-command-li ne.html

I would try to start it via the command line and see what you get.

Maybe cycle it.. turn it off and on again.. via the command line and see if that helps.

Definitely if you can do the TM reset .. A4 in pondini.

This is not common but upgrade installs of any OS are IMHO the pits.. they inevitably lead to issues.

It is better to clean install the OS and migrate your files.. and only your files.

I am sure people on the OSX side will disagree.. but there is a sure fix for your problems.. wipe and clean install.

Thanks for the quick response.

How to open TM in Preferences?

Attached are two pictures. One shows the error message along with the Finder window after I click the icon of TM. The other is the TC is visible from macbook over network. I can click "Data" to see the files located on TC.

I have read most of the Q/A on the link you previously provided, but did not see anything the same. Am I missing something?

I'll look into the command line control.

Thanks.

After changing both names of Macbook and TC, I did see the TM is up running. After entering the PS, I was able to set the disk, etc. and assumed it worked. Since I saw two exact disk, so, I did not select to use "both", but select another setting (forget its name.) Since TM wanted to make backup immediately, I turned it off. I thought the problem was solve, but I was WRONG!

Unfortunately, I am back to where it has been, the TM can't be launched again. I should have kept it ON, instead of turning it OFF. I still can see the files on TC, but no TM. Do I have to manually turn it on? If so, which PS should I enter? TC PS?

Sorry to touble you so much and I appreciate your patience and help greatly. I am really new to OS X environment and thought it should be easy, but I am wrong.

Oct 27, 2013 5:34 PM in response to PuzzledUser4760

Use the TM command line.. you turned it off.. so if you cannot get into preferences it is gone.. Turn it on again via the command.

This time don't turn it off.

In a terminal type, or better copy and paste.

sudo tmutil enable

tmutil startbackup

I am really new to OS X environment and thought it should be easy, but I am wrong.

It was easy if you stuck to Mountain Lion.. unfortunately you upgraded. Upgrade install in Mac OS is not that different to upgrade install in Windows. It works.. mostly.. and mostly causes issues if not immediately then certainly at some later point.

Oct 27, 2013 6:08 PM in response to LaPastenague

I copied sudo tmutil enable and was asked to enter PS. However, I could not do anything to enter PS.

Did I do something wrong? Is there anything else I can do?

See attached image. User uploaded file

I upgraded OS X because I would get iWORK free. It turned out that was not entirely true. Apple gave iWORK free to Macbook if it is purchased before 9/1/13. I got a couple of months earlier.

Do you have a way to elevate the issue, so that this issue can be further investigated and solved by the upcoming updates?

Oct 27, 2013 6:40 PM in response to PuzzledUser4760

You just type in your admin password.. ie the account you setup on the computer on day one which is the admin account.. use that password to give permission to the command to work.

Do you have a way to elevate the issue, so that this issue can be further investigated and solved by the upcoming updates?

You can give feedback..

https://www.apple.com/feedback/

Let me see if I can rate the importance Apple will give to this.. on the scale of 1-10.. about -6.

Good luck.

Oct 27, 2013 7:04 PM in response to PuzzledUser4760

May be I did not explain the problem clearly.

After enter the "sudo tmutil enable", I am NOT able to type anything following the "Password:" The key board will loss its functionality. So, I won't be able to type in any password, but use "Ctrl + C" to get it out. Is this another problem?

I just changed TC name again, make it even shorter. After updating the TC, the TM won't come up as it did before. It looks like I am stuck here.

I did download the OS X 10.9 to local HD, should I reinstall the OS? Is there any document that I can look through to learn the tricks / issues before doing it? Thanks.

Oct 27, 2013 9:40 PM in response to PuzzledUser4760

Just look for details on how to clean install the OS.

There is plenty of sites that give you the info.

Sorry I didn't follow that you could not type in your password.. yes, that is a very big problem..

Did you try creating a new user.. and give the new user full admin right.. then log out from the current current user and log in again with the fresh login.

I have the same error message with a local disk that has a new Backup made by Mavericks. The disk is mounted but the console log shows a fat bug in restoring from Time machine backups on Mavericks

29/10/13 11:07:08,748 Finder[35591]: Error enumerating (null): The file “Backups.backupdb” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it.

It is my backup, nobody else on my Mac! I notice the whole Backups.backupdb folder is owned root:wheel

After this command I re-mounted the disk and then I could restore from backup

sudo chgrp -R staff Backups.backupdb/

Can't connect to a current Time Machine backup disk
