4GB nano not holding many songs

my 4 GB nano is only holding about 106 songs and they are all 4 or 5 minutes long i see that some songs from the same album are different mbs (some are 40 and some are 3) and they are the same amount of time, why is that and how can i change it to fit more songs on the i pod?

ipod nano, Mac OS X (10.4.7)

VBR adjusts as needed. It's not as simple as saying it will save you xx MB, because it depends on the complexity of the music.

But is there generally a space savings using VBR?
