Not able to access Internet in browsers on Mac but can access everywhere else

After I have upgraded to 10.9, I face this at least thrice or more a day(and would resolve only after a system restart):

Suddenly browsers(Chrome, Safari, Firefox - all of them) shall stop connecting to the Internet

  • My other devices Android phone and RPi connects just perfect (even via Android Firefox and Chrome browsers). Not even speed problem or lag
  • Even on my Mac every thing else i.e. Adium, Dropbox, CloudApp etc works just fine, they are connected to the Internet as they should be
  • Just the browsers do not work. Not at all. Tried restarting them etc.

What I have not done or done:

  • I have not made any system changes, I swear.
  • When I try traceroute <website> it reaches their servers and does it fast as it does when I do with normal conenction(i.e. having Internet in the browsers)

Here's some background:

  • I have updatd to Mavericks
  • I connect to Internet via a Linksys Router and my MB Air is connected to router via Wi-Fi
  • I've Sophos anti-Virus installed(for 6 months+)
  • I have a raspberry pi(Ethernet) and an Anfroid phone(WiFi) connected to the same router and Internet (for 1 year+)

I am still facing the issue in Mountain Lion also.

But that is the OS i am using it from past1 year with the same wifi, i don't have any problems with it.

after installing the Mavericks i am facing this wifi disconnection, even in Mountain Lion.

i am able to access the same wifi in my Ipad & android phone without any problem. able to access all the websites. if i use my mac not able to access some websites ,for this i need to disable wifi & reenable it, then i can access it.

Please provide thoughts.

Same problem for me. Other Apps accessing internet but none of my three browsers could....

Though, strangely, could access Google search results and Facebook!!! Everything else gave an error.

Been on vacation for a week after I upgraded (yes, I know I should have waited) but IIRC, Mavericks reported an error/problem with Sophos after the upgrade. I switched to Avast at the time. But I think I subsequently then updated Sophos.

Uninstalling Sophos appears to have worked for me :-)

Two hours of my life I won't get back.

Much thanks for the help.

I'm also having this problem but don't have Sophos or any other form of firewall on the machine (OS X firewall is off). Simply, the browsers stop connecting to anywhere and give an instant unable to connect error (I don't think they even try), whereas I can access anything via traceroute or other programs. If I reboot it works again for a while.

There must be more to this than Sophos, as this is almost a clean install of Mavericks.

i had the same issue after updating. but a few hours later. at first i also reproduced every step, suspecting it could be due to OSX 10.9 or firewall settings.

i also did not have sophos installed and everything else concerning internet connection worked, except browsers. until i then noticed that google worked in chrome, only other pages did not.

finally it turned out, that i had also installed Kaspersky Internet Security that day, and deactivating Kaspersky completly solved the behaviour.

so i reckogn everyone should first check if he installed or updated any antivir software 🙂

It happed the same with me, we faced the no internet issue on 10-20 Mac Book Air (Mavericks). We put in all of experience and experts on it. Some of them cleared PRAM and it worked, but after few days again browsing stopped, Someone formated the Macbook and it worked but after few days it happened same. Since we have full cover support we returned the laptop to apple support they did something and gave it back but it also never lasted long.

After few month I found Sophos web protection causing this. Still I have to make sure but I think it is Sofos Antivirus settings which cause the big blunder.
