Cannot change path in Profile Manager --> Mobility --> Rules --> Skip items

All,

I'm using Mavericks server on a Mac Mini server in combination with two Mavericks MacBooks. Home Folders of Network users are stored on the Server and synchronized with mobile clients.

Everything worked fluently using Mountain Lion. However, since Mavericks I cannot edit the path under Profile Manager/Mobility/Rules/Skip items, no matter if it's about syncing "Preferences" or "Home Sync". I can create new items with empty path or change the drag down from "full path" to anything else but I cannot enter any path.

Has anybody else encountered this issue? I really need to edit this setting. Thank you,

Thomas

It looks like excluded files are not being respected upon login/logout sync in the new server 3.1.1. I'm investigating on our fresh Mavericks OD and Network Home Folder config but have been notified by Apple that FileSync is a deprecated technology and we should look to alternatives.

I will let you know what I find and if I can fix the mobility excludes issue.

Christopher, may I also ask you who and how notified you that the OS X Server home folder syncing is deprecated? This is the key reason why we use OS X Server, and if that feature is gone, without replacement, we will have no more reasons for using OS X Server... Perhaps this matter needs its own thread? Many thanks.

Hey Everyone,

I've been working on OS X Server for some time now. The FileSync issue could definitely be seen as a something that Apple has been ignoring or at least not throughly testing. We recently went to a school to do additional consulting work fixing the syncing exclusions not working appropriately. Originally the site was OS X Native, then switched to a JAMF's Casper v9. Even after rebuilding the MCX home sync into a new Profile, using Casper (which uses FileSync from my understanding) as it rebuilds the Managed Preferences/Profile XML files and places them in the same spots Apple does in order to have their system function. Using Casper 9.22, I can report it didn't work on a cleaned 10.8.5 client. Its possible but not likely that existing MCX settings were also affecting the client, however it didn't function. Building a fresh OD environment (ony importing users via WGM) and rebuilding all of our MCX into Profiles, the system still sync'd but also didn't acknowledge the exclusions, however thanks to server 3.1.1 we can put them into the the Profile. From my perspective it looks like the client doesn't know how to read the applied values written to the Managed Preferences folder. It's possible MCX only still works but something about the Profile implementation seems off on the client side. I'm going to be messing with it more tomorrow and will let you know what I come across.

I'm doubting a push to iCloud for things like this.

I have been able to edit HomeSync rules as well. In my case, through Profile only, it doesn't look like the file type exclusions are working. It was suggested to actually keep the homesync setup in WGM 10.9 under a computer list as that would work better. Looks like Profile Manager 3.1.1 for all settings except Mobility, keeping that in MCX using WGM 10.9... and then when it looks to be fixed in a future update, we'll move it back into a profile.
