after installing maverick power button does not provide options to sleep, shut-down

But it's so difficult add an option in System Preferences so everyone can chose what this button could do? On my laptop is completly USELESS now...if I want to sleep the mac I can simply close it! And while typing ofet the mac go in sleep.An option in System Preferences where I can chose ,for exemple, that clicking I sleep only the screen would be great! End everyone could do the same with their prefered option and fix all the problems!

First, I have just compiled the form month ago but like EVER Apple don't care so much about that until lots of people complain that.

Second,I'm an apple user from the old iMac G3 and one time Apple take care of ours when we wrote something in those forums...and after that....I have just bought a Macbook Pro 15"....after spending more than 2000€ for a computer I think to have the right to say my opinions.

I agree with the complaints about the change. That Apple did not make this user-selectable is a boo-boo.

Yes EVAN it is - when Apple changes a behavior that has been a staple in the OS for 28+ years.

This would be like auto-makers swapping the behavior of the gas and brake pedals in a car. Moving the brake pedal to the right and the gas to the left. Then expecting folks to "just drive".

I repeatedly press the power buitton still expecting the Dialog to show up and then my system goes black (sleep mode). Then it takes 30+ seconds to wake the ****** thing back up - then since my system is set to a password - I am locked out and have to log back in - in order to shut down the system. Can't readily do this from the screen saver (and not recommended).

They have made several drastic changes through the system that have been in place from near the beginning of the the Mac and they bluntly change the behaviors out - with no explanation or warning or documentation clariying their actions.

It's probably fine for someone that just started using Mac in the past couple of years and doesn't know any better - for those of us that have engrained muscle memory for basic actions and now we have to stop and consciously retrain ourselves after several decades is unacceptable.

ALSO - Evan - unless you know for a fact that it is definitely impossible to change the behavior then shut it. You are obviously not the end all authority on the Mac OS and seem to have limited knowledge on the capabilities.

Unless you're an Apple Developer then back up your ramblings.

I came to this forum in hopes of solving a problem that wastes my time and interferes with my concentration when I use my Apple product, one which previously was excellent. I did not take my time here to be insulted or to be offered to give up the benefits Mavericks has offered in order to have a functionality that simply can and should be available to those who prefer it.

How do you know they are not?

They don't use this forum to communicate with users, and they don't reply to any Feedback items, so you really never know what they are thinking or doing.

Very occassionally, when they have identified a problem and need more information, they will contact users here who have posted that they have the problem they are investigating.

Other than that, it is all us users who cannot alter Apple's programming or their policies. We cannot influence their engineering decisions in any way.

Currently, there is no "fix" for your "problem." It is working as designed.

The pmset command used to have a powerbutton option to configure that behavior, but it has been removed. The pmset command to show all settings displays a "Sleep On Power Button," but I have not found a way to set it.
