It would be lovely if Apple's engineers, when they decide to change a basic behaviour of the OS, offered a 'no thank you' option, so users who don't find it a good thing could switch back to the earlier, more useful-to-them behaviour.

I'm with the other users posting on this thread; perhaps if I explain what happens, it might be useful to the engineers.

I'll be working on a piece of editing, using On the Job to time my job and cost it, and working my way through a novel or business book, usually in Word or Scrivener, and my right little finger reaches up for the 'delete' button, and accidentally tips the power button on my Air.

The Air instantly goes to sleep. My blood pressure goes up and I swear: "Oh, *glory*!"

Then I hit the button again, deliberately; the password screen comes up. I type in my password, and wait the few seconds, and the screen gradually fades in again, and I get back to work.

In theory, this has cost my client perhaps a minute. In practice, it's more like ten minutes, because this interruption throws me off, and the flow of my attention isn't really properly back on the job for five or ten minutes; I'll have to glance back at what I was doing - the interruption has knocked me out of work mode and I might say ah, heck, I'll go for a cuppa…

Engineers, please, please code in some method of choosing *not* to have this option - or, if you think it's really useful, to invoke it only with a double keystroke, like alt-power or function-power.

Because it takes extra code and, thus, extra manpower to maintain all of the "options." Apple rarely if ever offers options for anything. However, they did build back in options to have "Save As" and turning off Resume, so it is possible, if enough people provide feedback to Apple on the Feedback page, they may implement it.

Given that they removed the functionality in the pmset utility, it is more than a cosmetic change to the value of the default behavior. As I stated, there is no option to switch the behavior back, so the changes are more involved than merely changing a 1 to a 0.

You have a problem with your Mac waking from sleep. You should start a new post to help resolve that problem.

Some people have started to work on this silly problem.

On this reddit thread, it is suggested to modify a plist file (/System/Library/CoreServices/powerd.bundle/com.apple.SystemPowerProfileDefaults.plist) by changing all instances of the key Sleep On Power Button from 1 to 0. The screen will still go black, apparently, but if you tell System Preferences to delay the password lock for a few seconds after screen dimming, you can immediately get back to work.

A developer reverse-engineered the power button behavior and wrote a piece of software that restores the old way of things (linked in that article).

Another suggestion he gives is to enter

sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/AppleACPIPlatform.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleACPIButtons.kext/

in a terminal, to disable the button altogether.

And then there is PowerKey, whose maker is working on the problem.

All of these hacks modify your system; there is a risk that things may go wrong when you apply them. You do this at your own risk. Alternatively we can hope that Apple will see how stupid all of this is. Many of us have been to the Feedback site to tell them.

My solution so far has been to stay on OS X 10.8.

Apple should let "some" users (the more advanced ones - because hey there it the other kind, too) choose how they want some things to behave. So unless their engineers cant code this function they should put their magical ideas as default and allow options to change the behaviour for the rest of people (those who dont like their circles disturbed as Archimedes said).
