Problem not solved - my problem is not to 'hide/show' the side-bar. Of course, I know how to do this. The problem is that, when you click on the 'book' symbol on the favourites bar, the side-bar appears on the left, which is completely useless. In previous versions a screen as the one when clicking on 'edit bookmarks' appears, which is much more useful, as one has the full folder structure and the URL etc. visible.
This helped. I set this to Same page and opened new page. Then for a moment it looked like it didn't help but once I selected a site by typing couple first letters to address bar ONLY THE WANTED page opened. No sign of the space-wasting side-window. So no more need to keep closing it.
So to recap: To solve the problem, which is to prevent the history-side-window from ever showing (then no need to close it) do this:
Go to Safari --> Preferences --> General --> change NEW WINDOW OPENS WITH to Same Window.
Why so many people in this thread answer the wrong question is beyond me. It was a serious waste of bandwidth. For all you people who instructed on how to close the history tab instead of answering the real question. Please go to the mirror and ask if you see a nice person there.

I have gotten rid of it by just taking out of the toolbar the "sidebar" icon. On the menu bar left click so the "Customize toolbar" shows, there you just drag outside the toolbar the sidebar icon and "voilá"!
Greetings all!
Click on bookmarks, and when you do there will be a "hide bookmarks" option.😀
Yaaay, problem solved. I followed your advice. First i rotated screen, clicked up too to bring up tabs then followed your instruction.
Yes. Usually my iPad Pro 2017 doesn't have all of the daddies that are described in post to help me delete most of my bookmarks and most of my reading list.
Probably because this is not the iPad forum. Try posting your question there.
Go to Preferences > General. In the options you'll find: "New Windows Opens With:" and "New Tabs Open With:" choose "Empty Page" for both. That has work for me perfectly.
What "view" button. I don't see that either. I cannot stand this sidebar. Please help me get rid of it!
