4hdd/11/40000000:sata(0,0) Apple Hardware Test (holding D at power on)

I appear to have developed a SATA disk error after 5+ months of use. I was running the D at power on test daily then once a week with no problem. Last week when running the Apple Hardware Test this error appeared "4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0)". Can anyone help me determine why this just started after 5+ months with no problems?

Does Apple have a definitive response for this? I recently ran the Apple Hardware Test on my MBPr 15 early 2013, mainly because I had to do it for my MBP 15 2012 which had a problem with it's right fan, and it also got this error (on my MBPr). Since I was bringing my old MBP to the Apple store anyway, I brought my MBPr to have them check it out. It passed both their system-wide and storage specific diagnostics. The tech also said something like "AHT is really old and doesn't know how to handle SSDs" and that he's seen this a couple of other times. Is this really the case? According to the Knowledge Base article it takes "multiple loops" of AHT to induce, but I only ran AHT once. My system runs fine, but I'd prefer not to have some issue brewing only to have my MBPr's SSD fail at some unopportune time.

Same experience for me. I have a MBPr 15 (early 2013), ran the test to appease my curiosity, and it threw up this error after one pass [Alert! Apple Hardware Test has detected an error 4hdd/11/40000000: SATA(0,0)]. Computer runs just fine, but I don't want a nascent issue brewing either. This does seem to be a recent statement, though: Mac notebooks: Apple Hardware Test may report "HDD" alert

I am having the same problem. I am also having problem that my Macbook Pro randomly shutdowns when in sleep mode and must be started with a hard boot. When I try to wakeup from sleep. it will not start so I end up holding down the power key until it starts.


I also get some significant hear at times.


We do not have anApple store in our city. I have photographed the error message and will take it into one of the Apple support shops.


Is there anything I can do with Apple on the phone, i.e. have them take over desktop and do the diagnostics to confirm the problem?

I get the error again, it does not help. My MacBook was hanging out.

Tried the Flash clear with no improvement. My 2012 Retina MBP has been grumpy ever since I first installed the Yosemite Public Beta. It is still under Applecare warranty and originally, as it was in the range that has graphics card problems, Apple suggested that I take it in to my authorised dealer, Solutions Inc in Hove, UK for a graphics check (you can never get an appointment at the Brighton, UK Apple Store Genius Bar). They did yet another install of Yosemite (probably now its fifth) but pronounced that stress testing of the graphics card did not come up with a problem. Hmmmm, so why did I keep getting messages saying your Mac has to close due to graphics issue, when running Photoshop CC2014, with hardware acceleration on. It seemed a bit more stable after an install of 10.10.2 rather than updated 10.10.


Anyway as of yesterday it crashed again and now will only start in Safe Boot. I did all the usual first aid (HD repair, file permissions repair, clear caches, PRAM and SMC resets etc) and ran the AHT, which produced this same error all the posters here are getting 4HDD etc. Phoned Applecare who did a few more tweaks and re-ran the AHT - same error. The Apple man thinks it is either the SSD (750GB!) or the SATA controller and something will definitely need replacing. I have run back ups today and will take it back to dealer for more extensive tests. I hope they can repair it by 7th of April as I am off to France for 5 months on the morning of the 8th. It is a real heave getting all the apps to work again after reloading them for a back up. This retina MBP has been the most troublesome Mac I have had since the original Intel 21" Core Duo iMac, which Apple finally replaced with a Core 2 Duo model, after 6 repairs.

I have exactly the same as f2racer a few posts up. Now I clicked his "this helped me" by accident on his post, thinking this was "I have exactly the same issue".


Anyway I would certainly like to know more about this, the mac runs fine.


The only other thing I have is that my storage display in about this mac is totally incorrect, and constantly keeps changing on a daily basis between correct and incorrect storage display.


I am really wondering after all I read here what on earth is happening. Is there any definitive solution to my 2 little problems?

Can anyone help with these annoying issue?

Do these occur because I have always been doing updates instead of fresh installs since early 2013?


I feel like apple is not going to help me with this issue after reading all this.

I have the same problem and Apple is unable to fix the issue (2012 Retina MBP) for months. They keep claiming they will, they replace something, the problem is back after a few hours. After their latest repair my computer stopped operating completely. I have spent several 12 hours days making backups, restoring things, redoing stuff I did earlier, altogether I had to bring the computer for repair about 5 times. Now the person "assisting" tells me to call them to discuss what's next (I want them to replace the computer with one that works) but on the number he gives they refuse to connect me to him.


After months and lies from them my patience has run out, so I plan to collect more people who have the same issue and start a class action to get my money back and get reimbursed for the weeks of my life they have wasted. If you have similar SSD errors or never ending repairs and you are unable to use or trust your computer let me know.

The test is correct. The parts of SSD wear out within hours (if used heavily, like installing virtual machines) probably due to firmware error or heat issues. If you are unlucky (like me) it hit something where important data was and you end up with a totally screwed filesystem. False positives don't lock up an OS and create file system anomalies.
