For my solution;
So far so good for my Maverick experience
Cick and drag the bottom right corner of the Finder window to the left.
Double click the line between adjacent column headers and it will resize to fit.
i have EXACT same problem. Defaults too wide. Any fix?
I tried that (and other modifier keys) but it still defaults to "long view." Still trying to figure this one out.
Thanks for the reply.
Noticed the same problem on my iMac and MBP. Went back to Mountain Lion until this annoying bug is fixed.
And interestingly, this only works with local discs. External drives retain the long name column.
Hoping for a fix.
Thanks campoxford,
This problem had been frustrating me. Your tip works brilliantly for me. I had to hold option and drag the column width for each of my hard drives. Now problem is solved. Hooray !!!
I'm experiencing the same problem. I've tried the suggestions that have been made in this thread and none have helped in any meaningful way.
It certainly looks like a bug to me.
For what it's worth, I'm experiencing the same bug as the OP.
If one only uses the Name column in a given finder window, I assume that option-dragging the divider isn't an option, if you'll pardon the pun?
also - anyway to make it to move back a folder with three finger swipe?
Also having this issue - incredibly annoying! Name field is consistently way way too long.
This doesn't work for me.
I have the same problem since 10.9.
