"Name" portion of my Finder windows too long

If it were that simple, there wouldn't be eight pages of responses to this thread. Holding down option was the answer a decade ago; not anymore.

The pain part is you have to do the option-move procedure on EVERY folder individually.

All my folders now open without a horizontal scroll bar.

You speak of the windows in the finder that are too large and and often invisible, but we want to speak of the windows within applications such as export or imports that are too small and I have to resize them every time a thousand times a day?

This isn't a bug it's a feature. For some reason Apple have decided to widen the first column (usually Name) when you widen a window, rather than the way they used to do it by widening the last leftover column. Afraid it's just bad user interface design from the Mavericks team.

An oversight is not the same thing as a feature.

Granted, the problem we're discussing is usually more drastic than what's shown in this particular window, but the fact remains: the Option key has no effect.

I'd love to know this too - has Yosemite fixed this bug? If so I'll take the risk of the upgrade.

Yes (for me, at least). Now how do I get rid of the new Kindergarten-ish blue color on all the folders?

On my systems (3 machines so far), the name column problem is gone in Yosemite.

I think it's a bug too.

I found a solution that seems to fix this.
1.) Open a new finder window

2.) If All the columns aren't visible, drag the lower right corner of the window to the right until they are.

3.) Resize the Name column to be narrower.

4.) Close the window immediatey.

5.) Open another new finder window. Is this finder window too wide?

-if yes:

a.) drag the lower right corrner to the left to make the window the width you want.
b.) close the window immediately.
c.) open a new finder window again.

-if no:

a.) you don't need to do anything else.

This seems to have permanently fixed the problem for me.
