I realize "tabs" took it's place but all my business files are predicated on a carefully organized color file system. This was an awful decision for some of us. Any new apps to fill the void?

If you have "admin" access to your Mac and are not limited by corporate policy (regarding installing external applications), I vote for installing XtraFinder to work around this issue. If you have a coporate IT policy in place that is limiting what you can install, you are out of luck, I guess. Then all you can do is provide Apple feedback (something I recommend you should do even if you decide to install XtraFinder or any other app to solve this issue). Thanks.
I think most people have adapted now since this thread started almost two years ago.

Thanks. I'll be looking at XtraFinder real soon. These tiny colored dots are NOT happening, and I'm sure the 50+ crowd hate them even more than I do.
On behalf of the 50+ crowd, yes, you got that right! But Xtrafinder works well and it provides some other neat Finer improvements too so it's all good.
Thanks, this helped me immensely. Great to have my color-coded bars back! Now if only there was a truly effective way to bring back WindowShade, I'd be in Heaven (I use Deskovery, but it's got a few glitches).
I still miss the color labels.
After three years I can't even remember them!
