MBA mid-2013 wakes from sleep every minute on Mavericks

Thank you xes13! I did remove Avast and it has proven so far to be an adequate solution. However, I believe that people at Avast should be the ones to address the problem at hand.

Hi, been experiencing this wake issue as well, and I may have narrowed it down in my case to the headphones being plugged into the jack; at least removing them seems to have stopped the waking up after 1 minute

Did the upgrade to 10.9.1 solve the issue for anyone?

I do not have Avast installed and have nothing plugged in.

I still got the issue after the 10.9.1 upgrade.

Ive got the same "problem", MacbookAir6,2, 8GB, osx 10.9, no antivirus installed.

Problem is in quotes, since it is not really a problem. All you have to do is disable 'standby':

sudo pmset -a standby 0

There is no need to set a ridiculously high value for 'standbydelay', just disable the feature.

Which, i dont think ppl really understand what it means.

It means, that if the machine is in sleep already (system state kept in memory), after 'standbydelay' seconds, it will attempt deep sleep, i.e. hibernation. Now, this feature is useless, at least for me.

What all this comes down to, is battery life. I have a good battery, so i dont really want my machine to hibernate, since on full charge, apple says, it can power the machine in sleep for 30 days, iirc. If you have a shatty battery, you should hibernate instead, it is really fast on these ssd's. The way to achive that, is to change 'hibernatemode':

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 1

or

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

(read 'man pmset' for the difference)

Now when you make your machine sleep, it will go into hibernation directly. When it wakes from this state, you will see a blurred image of your then current desktop with a blue tint and a progressbar.

Now, come some observation/speculation:

The MBA has the fan always spinning when there is system activity, i.e. when it is not sleeping, even if it wakes because of the 'standby' feature, so if you put your ears close to the chassis you can hear it. Another thing, is that you can actually hear when the ssd is really active, at least a special kind of noise corresponds to that. (i dont know the exact cause of this kind of noise, but you can observe it for some kinds of hardware, e.g. graphics cards, i think some condensator is driven near audible frequencies or something) (Also, the fan spinning at ~1200 rpm constantly is annoying in a slient room, it is better at ~1000 rpm).

So, when i try pure hibernation, even though i have 8GB of physical ram, the system only creates a 4GB or 4.2GB sleepimage. So that size at least is needed for hibernation, since i observed several perfectly fine hibernation cycles. (i just mention, that i have swapping disabled). Now, whenever the 'standby' feature tries to hibernate the machine from sleep, it will only create a 1GB sleepimage, which is clearly not enough to back up memory. Also, compared the time i hear the ssd noise when it cleanly hibernates to the time i hear the ssd in the failed case, is, i would say 4:1.

In conclusion, i would suggest you disable 'standby' and set 'hibernatemode' to 0. Or to 3, which would hibernate when battery cannot keep the machine in sleep state anymore, but i cant confirm if that hibernation fails or not(i would guess it would fail).

I set my MBA to be:

sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 25

As stated in the manual,

The system will store a copy of memory to persistent storage (the disk), and will remove power to memory. The system will restore from disk image. If you want "hibernation" - slower sleeps, slower wakes, and better battery life, you should use this setting.

It seems that this means that standby will never be used. However, to be safe I set standby to 0 disabling it.

I have tested it for a few days. When it sleeps at 100% at midnight, in the morning it is still at 100%. This completely solves the problem.

Tuning off standby and setting the hibernate mode to 25 solved this for me and I happen to be running Avast AV as well. I've experienced one wake from hibernate failure after 30-40 separate sleeps. Specifically I did the following:

sudo pmset -b standby 0

sudo pmset -b standbydelay 0

sudo pmset -b hibernatemode 25

'man pmset' explains the above as previously mentioned.

This is on a new 13" MacBook Pro Retina. My late 2012 MacBook Pro 15" Retina does not experience this problem using the default settings and also running avast and a slew of other background apps (FitBit, etc.). Both systems are running 10.9.1. On the 15" Retina system my settings are:

standby 1

standbydelay 4800

hibernatemode 3

Liquid.Phynix solved the problem for me. I only had to disable standby mode and my MacBook slept nicely last night. 1% battery drain. Thanks a bunch to all.

I don't run any anti virus, so I believe you don't need to disable Avast in order for this solution to work.

Following up, it was resetting the PRAM that has worked for me so far; I hadn't even thought to try it originally since several people were saying that it didn't work for them

I am using a macbook pro 13 with retina display which runs mavericks 10.9.1.

I had the same issue of computer waking up from sleep every minute and discharging the battery.

I tried Liquid.Phynix solution of disabling standby mode and it worked.

But later I realized that the main culprit was the sleep timer and not the standby mode. I guess after few software updates, the sleep timer in my laptop was automatically changed to a value 1. Initially I thought that it was a boolean value of either 0 or 1. Later I found out that it was actually the time lapse in minutes after which the computer goes to sleep.

I changed it to 15, a value higher than or equal to displaysleep and disksleep (sudo pmset -b sleep 15) and enabled standy mode (i.e. sudo pmset -b standy 1 standby delay 10800) . This solved the issue of waking from sleep everyminute. I have done sleep tests for 3 consecutive nights and can confirm that this works for me.

However, I dont know the exact reasons for why this works.

Update: the PRAM reset stopped working later that day; still don't know what's causing the waking

My problem was solved (at least temporarily)!!

I had the exact same issue with my Macbook Pro 13" Retina (late 2013 model). Apparently there is a problem with Hybernation mode in the Mavericks OS where the computer awakes every couple of minutes. Our IT guy told me that Apple is working on a patch but not yet out. He set my Hybernation mode to start after 7 days of computer idle (which basically means it never goes into hybernation), and this morning my battery was still fully charged! I'm sorry but I can't tell you how to make this setting change, it's not something easily accessible in System Preferences, so you will need to contact Apple.

Sleep wakes reoccured when I installed XQuartz.

I uninstalled it and the problem is resolved.

The issue occured for the very first time when I installed XQuartz too... I'd be regretful to uninstall it but here seems to be (at least for some of us) the problem.
