Slow loading Finder in Mavericks?

I filed a report to Apple, and also had a lengthy chat last night with support. They said that although they've had increasing calls with these issues, there was no "known" bug or solution - just that they've been getting calls about it, and all they can do is tell people the normal things they always do. So no real help there...

I'm experiencing this (annoying) bug as well.

I tried all proposed solutions w/o any improvement. After short testing I could isolate my biggest problems being bound to the column view.

When using the List view I don't experience the bug. The bug is in my case the Finder being very slow (Beachball) when listing folder contents or dragging files.

When the bug is happening (in column view) I can see following log message in the console:

2/14/14 2:20:16.584 AM WindowServer[120]: disable_update_timeout: UI updates were forcibly disabled by application "Finder" for over 1.00 seconds. Server has re-enabled them.

I really hope that this bug will be fixed soon. It makes working with the Finder impossible.

Had a message left for me. Engineering is out of troubleshooting steps (the stuff we tried) and it looks like it will need to be something to be implemented in an update. I have a call in to get a little more clarification but that's the gist of the message.

Good news is, they see it is a trend and not user specific. We may be on our way to a fix!

This is getting really annoying and it really frustrates me in the fact that I spent a lot on the SSD for everything to load fast, and now it takes longer than my 2010 macbook.

Bryan - was there any clue as to where the problem is? Finder? Networking? Graphics Drivers? I mean, the problem could be anywere...

Hi Folks, I just had this issue today with Finder and high CPU utilization. Running updated Mavericks on Mac Mini Mid 2010. I decided to took a sample of Finder process and I noticed a lot of calls on OlsonTimeZone. Today is daylight savings end day in the country I live in (Brasil). I decided to take a shot and go to System Preferences / Date & Time and uncheck "Set date and time automaticaly" and back the date to one day behind. Finder got back to normal CPU utilization. When I checked "Set date and time automaticaly" CPU went back up with Finder spiking up. Maybe it is not the original issue of this thread but I think it's worth to give it a try. BR.

I have the same problem and have been following this site for a while. I could not understand why Apple is not able to do anything even with over 40k viewers and 12 pages of complaints!

If you don't send them feedback, they won't see your issue. There have been threads a hundred times this long which have failed to catch their attention, because they do not use these user to user forums as a feedback channel. Try

Unforunately, no, I didn't get an indication. I've been playing phone tag with the senior agent managing the case over the past few days since I've been out sick. As soon as I have more info, I'll be sure to update the thread.

Edit* He just called me back. No news yet from engineering, has anyone tried using terminal to disable IPV6 at all? That's the only suggestion they had so far.

How does one do that? Turn off IPV6 via the terminal? That at least points to some weird network problmem... guessing...

Everyone, do me a favor and try it. I did a quick test and initially, it corrected the issue but I want a few more people to try it out to see if it holds any water before I get back to them. The terminal command to turn off IPV6 for Wi-Fi is:

networksetup -setv6off Wi-Fi

It will prompt you to enter in a admin password. Once it is done, you can verify it worked by checking your system prefs as your IPV6 in your WiFi profile will show as "Off" instead of Automatic, Manual, or any other option. Give it a good thorough test and get back to me.

I think if you replace Wi-Fi with Ethernet, it should work - the Wi-Fi is referring to the Service name in the Network prefs. See if that works. I'm trying to figure out a way for my Thunderbolt Ethernet as it's not reading correctly
