No more iMessage alerts or bounces after Mavericks

I don't think there is a fix to this, but if there is, I'd love to know about it.

After installing Mavericks, the ability to set Alerts in iMessage has disappeared. I can no longer ask the icon to bounce, or speak an announcment when a friend comes online or requests a chat. This is something I used all the time, and I am VERY disappointed that Apple would remove such a useful and I would think, popular, feature. 😟

Hi,

The Sounds still play (in fact all apart form one you cannot turn Off).

The Bounce the DOCK icon set System Preferences > Notifications for Messages.

The only sound you can change in Messages in in the General Section and is for the Messages Received item

You can set NONE or any System Sound or those in your ~/Library/Sounds folder.

(You cannot select the other Messages sounds such as the Ringer for A/V Invites)

EDIT.

I have not checked the Notifications need sto be set to play all sounds (In Mountain Lion Messages overrode the Notification Centre)

I also have issue setting a new Sound for Messages Received. It seems it shows in the Preferences and lasts the session Only and is not written to the .plist

Also items in the .plist that list specific sounds for Specific Buddies also don't play as listed in the .plist

I don't see any way to bounce the icon in any setting anywhere. I have Messages.app set in Notifaction Center to use Banners and the badge icon. The badge icon does not work, and the banners are too short-lived. I take a sip of tea, and completely miss the fact that someone sent me a message.

I tried setting the sound to something obnoxious, but that seems to work once or twice, then I get either the system sound or no sound.

I tried moving to alerts, but then my screen fills up with annoying alerts that I must dismiss during every chat. What would be nice is an alert for a "new" chat, and a banner for an existing one maybe. Even that is unlikely to work, now that I think of it, because I just had a chat at 7:00 this morning, and the first few message were grouped with the previous ones at 18:30 last night, so I am not sure Messages.app's determination of a "new" chat is working.

Basically, the lack of some clear messages is driving me, reluctantly, back to Adium.

Hi,

In the previous version of the softweare used to run these boards you had to be Level 4 to access the Lounge (it was still 8000 points)

All the way through the iChat 4 period I used to tell the Hosts that the page was out of date regarding both trhe Version number and the OS version drop down.

The OS version drop down was solved by the page being added to a list of pages that should be updated at OS Updates and Upgrades (so it does list OS X 10.9)

You will also notice that the Camera text fields also presume Firewire or similar camera (external iSight and similar) and not any Internal USB iSight or FaceTime camera or any external USB 2 (UVC Compliant camera).

The actual Version drop down is wrong from the start

The Public Beta like the Messages beta was available during the Previous OS.

It was akin to version 2 (IChat AV is version 2)

In Jaguar it was a Paid for add on app you could buy.

In Panther it was free.

Then comes the 2.1 update and is not a beta.

After that the Version 3.0.1 is the only standalone Update there has been since.

All updates since then have come in the OS X updates and therefore the version and the OS need to be "Matched"

Version 3.x.x also gets to version 3.1.9 by the time the OS has got to OS X 10.4.11

There is also a Number change to the 4.0.8 version after a security update at the time which in some views lists it as version 4.0.9

As I have stated, the page has never been that good about these things anyway so I don't actually read that much into the fact it does not list Messages.

I have found that the app makes all the sounds that you want when you have the app open, and are actively looking at it, but if I'm not looking at it, it will not not ding, bounce, or do anything helpful.

This precisely. If I've got chat actively in focus, it makes a noise. If I'm in another app, no noise, no bounce, nothing. I find old chat messages sometines hours later. Major suxage.

Hi,

I have changed the Sound for Messages received in the General section of the Preferences.

I have chosen one that is in my ~/Library/Sounds folder (they were there from this Migrated Mac User account)

Whilst still not perfect it does seem to play more often in Mavericks/Messages 8 than the Standard sound.

I have had it play when the app does not have focus (is in the background)
