How to burn DVD in iMovie 10

I have already turned to the help section and tried what's been listed above; still no results. In the projects window, I have one movie that I have queued in the "creating movie", and it is not saving it to a movie file. It does create an mp4, which has audio only. The manual says nothing about burning a dvd that I can find, rather the only reference to dvd is importing directly from camera to dvd. I also do not have idvd.

What a mess. I'm really sorry I upgraded so far. Any new suggestions would be most welcome.

I'm not sure why you don't have iDVD, since I think it comes with every system. In addition to taking a movie file and burning it to a DVD via Toast, I tried opening iDVD and using Magic DVD. That gives you a screen where you can drop a movie file and it looked like most of the files I had would work that way.

Next time I need to burn a dvd, I'm going to try that method.

And I agree that the manual doesn't seem very detailed or complete.

I'd love to try Toast, but I can't even save this to a file. The only functioning "exports" are to youtube and all that. It just endlessly promises it's going to make it and sends it to the cloud anyway.

I'll keep trying. I've put too much work into this project to quit. I will keep an eye on this thread in case someone has ideas.

RuffiansRide, I hope that you get an answer. I am trying to burn some DVDs for my family's hristmas party tomorrow and didn't think it would be so complicated with iMovie. I'll let you know if I figure something out, but I hope to get an answer soon.

Hi there, I followed your steps exactly Alan Cook2 but am still unable to create a DVD (like I used to before all the updates) In addition to being able to pull the mp4 file into idvid, I am also unable to pull the video up in quicktime either? I get an error message that tells me quicktime is unable to open my file (mp4 file that was created thru imovie) Any ideas? Thanks!

Alan Cook - Thank you for your direction on how to burn a DVD. I clicked on Share/File/(and then tried all 4 file types)... then nothing. I do not have MacKeeper installed (at least a search did not show it installed) What now?

Also, while I'm here...., I must express my anger with Apple for dropping the simple function of burning a DVD from Movie 10. Apple missed the mark on this one! I have just spent a week making a family video from our vacation last year. I want to have some sort of tangable media (DVD) in my hands at the end of this process..... like the previuous 9 DVDs/vacations we have had. Why on earth did Apple drop the idea that people don't want to make a DVD???????

I am having the same trouble burning a DVD! If Apple has decided to give us software to create slide shows and has upgraded that why in the "H" have they taken away the ability to burn a DVD from your created iMovie slide show? It just doesn't make sense! I have also tried sending the movie to Vimeo with no positive results. Why put these options on the iMovie software if they don't work. Just affirms my opinion that Apple doesn't care about desktop users anymore and is spending all their time making convenient tablet apps and leaving good customers behind to be frustrated as H!

Well.....the first try gave me an error message when I tried to pull the movie into iDVD. I did the share again this afternoon and it seems like it has worked........ we shall see. I think it stinks that Apple is not supporting iDVD! I have made an annual DVD every year for several years. I'm going to check out the share via Vimeo also and if it doesn't work then I have another bone to pick!

I'm having similar trouble. I have a completed iMovie project (it appears in the iMovie Theater) and it plays fine in iMovie. However, when I open iDVD to create a new project, I am unable to locate the iMovie file in any form or format. Yes, I've searched my entire hard drive and external drives for the file but no luck . . . . where can I find the iMovie so that I can import it or drag it into iDVD? . . . I also tried "sharing to iTunes" but it's been compiling for >10 hours and the blue cirlce progress monitor shows no progress. I am using a MacBook Pro 2009 (8 Mb ram) but the movies themselves are all on an 2 TB WD external drive, accessed through a USB port, which I'm guessing is the speed bottleneck in this set up. . . . any suggestions appreciated . . . . rgds . . I think if you keep looking you will find your iMovie project somewhere on your hard drive. You could try and see if the iMovie preferences tell you where the file is stored after creation and then look there. I have had trouble like this in the past and don't remember how I resolved it. Once you find out where the file is going you can set it to end up on your desk top so that you can easily find it the next time. Hope this helps!

Tracy, if you follow the step-by-step instructions I posted on page 1 of this thread, at step 3 you will tell iMovie WHERE to save the file. Then when you go to add it to iDVD, it will be wherever you told it to save to in that step.

Thanks for those replies . . . I did try to "share" the iMovie project so that I could create a file for use in iDVD . .. . but it seems like iMovie just churns away without actually creating a file in the location I select --- I tried once to "file" (saving it to my hard drive) and once to "iTunes". . . . . . is it normal for iMovie to take 24 hours to create file that can be used in iDVD? . .. THX.

James Bear - your experience sounds like mine . . . I'm conditioned to believe that Apple products "just work" so it's surprising to see an Apple product that is so finnicky.

Alan Cook - thanks for all your helpful tips . . . my movie is 109 minutes.

I will pick up this project later this week . . . . armed with some new optimism that others have trodden this path.

This might be a stupid question, but where do you get iDVD from? It is not on my Mac, (latest Macbook pro), and I can't see it on the App store.

Is there any other recomended DVD software that works with Imovie files?

James Bear - I am following your instructions and I need to ask another question --- when you say it takes "ages" for the file to appear in the folder, can you define that a little better? Is this 2 hours, 12 hours 24 hours or something else?

I am concerned because I am "sharing" by creating a "file" to a new folder folllowing both you and Alan Cook's advice but it appears that nothing is happening. The blue clock activity indicator doesn't even appear to indicate progress so I hear my hard drive spinning like mad but going nowhere.

I feel like iMovie is churning away but nothing seems to be happening. . . . . so I need to understand how long Iet it churn before quitting and then trying again (as you suggest).
