mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Ok so Wifi is really starting to annoy now....

I have a 2013 Mac Air (about 1 month old). I upgraded to mavericks and now EVERYTIME the machine goes to sleep, i close the lid, whatever the wifi connection is shut down and on logging in again, the wifi doesn't connect. I have to manually turn off wifi and then turn on again before selecting my network (and usually needs 2 attempts).

This is unacceptable.

Does anybody else suffer from this issue? any ideas on how to fix it (other than reverting back to MLion - if that's even possible)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Kind Regards

For what it's worth, in the case of our new retina Haswell MBP, the PRAM reset (holding down the command -option-P-R keys while booting) seems to have solved it. Been more than a week now.

We also unchecked "Wake for WiFi network access" in Energy prefs.

I've even turned Bluetooth back on, as well as, keychain syncing in iCloud.

It would be nice if that did it.

Using Mavericks 10.9.1

I'm in the same boat. I never had any issues with my MBP until last week. I recently upgraded to Mavericks, but had had no problems with Snow Leopard, Lion or Mountain Lion. Then, all of a sudden: WiFi No Hardware Installed. Spent about five days trying all of the tips and tricks. Convinced myself it might be a HW issue after all, but then after doing an SMC reset for about the 20th time this morning, it came back! Advice: persist with the various workarounds. But the problem is clearly something that should be addresed more formally. (Also using 10.9.1).

Wow, unchecking "Wake for WiFi network access in Energy prefs solved it completely for me. What happens now is that when I lift the cover to wake up the MBA, it immediately reconnects to the network. Takes about 2 seconds, and nothing has to be done. I'm quite satisfied with this. The problem before was that MBA thought it was connected, but it actually wasn't, so you pretty much had to turn WiFi off and on again to force a true connection. Thanks to David in Germantown!!

This is the 3 blind guys sharing reports on what the unknown (it is an elephant) creature they are feeling up is. bottom line, if the most reliable fix is throwing away the system configuration folder, then there is a serious bug in the system, and it's time for 10.9.2 to fix it. Apple? End of rant. Now, for the wizards out there, how is it that the replacement for my configuration folder that the OS creates on reboot contains some files that are old, and that were there in the folder I threw out? Does OSX keep a hip pocket copy of this folder somewhere?

One day and many sleeps later, I am still completely satisfied with the solution of unchecking "Wake for WiFi network access" in Energy Preferences. I wonder: did the upgrade to Mavericks reset that parameter? Is that why many people thought this problem was caused by the upgrade to Mavericks? Maybe it's a real problem, but this "workaround" does it for me. Now I don't have to think about it or do anything except be a tiny bit patient, and I'm connected every time MBA wakes up.

For me, this issue is inconvenient because I use my MBA on a Thunderbolt monitor. If I forget to turn Wifi back on before hooking it up, then I have to take the extra steps to open the shell again, re-search every time for my wireless keyboard (because it gets totally dropped), etc. I would like to see this issue fixed. I don't know if it will ever be fixed, considering people have been reporting the problem since the end of 2013. It's always nice to hear of people who take pleasure in being inconvenienced, however. Very Zen, bravo! 😉

10.9.2 has been released to commerical developers. It has one fix in it that some Mac Air mid 2013 are having with a premature sleep problem that requires a forced reboot. Otherswise the sreen remains black and the keyboard is lit but non functional. So that fix is in the new 10.9.2 version. I have not heard if they have the wireless issue fixed in 10.9.2 or when it will be released to the general public.

I had that problem about 2 to 3 times, and this morning, it happened again while preparing for an exam coming up in the afternoon. I was so angry that my reference sheet I prepared on Word may have been gone because I was forced to reboot by pressing the power button. But thankfully, Word recovered my document.

Hi,

I would like to add my experiance with this issue because I have two seperate behaviors with my late 2013 15" retina MPB operating under 10.9.1.

1) If I am connected to the WiFi connection in my home (Linksys E4200 router) I never have issues reconnecting to my WiFi network from sleep. All networks are immediately there and I immediately connected to my preferred connection.

2) I have a different situation when connected to my ATT MiFi Liberate. Once the rMBP goes to sleep and I rewake the computer there are no WiFi connections available after rewaking the rMBP. The ATT MiFi Liberate is in my preferred onnections but it #3 on the list. Like everyone else, I have to turn off WiFi and turn it back on to get the available WiFi connections to appear. This problem is resovled by turing off the Bluetooth radio (as availalbe Bluetooth devices not connected I have Blubuds, Magic Mouse, and Bose Soundlink Mini).

I do not understand why I shoud have two differnt behaviors depending on which WiFi network I was previously connected. Maybe this information help someone determine a better solution than turning off the Bluetooth radio.

Cheers,

Hi All,

I can confirm no237's comment that 10.9.2 did not resolve the bluetooth/wifi bug. I am using a late 2013 15" MBP. If I am connected to a 2.4 GHz router or hotspot card and bluetooth is on at the time the computer goes to sleep, upon wake up there are no WiFi connections available. I have to turn off WiFi and then turn it back on in order to see SSIDs to reconnect.

This was a very well known and documented problem. I am curious as to why this was not fixed with 10.9.2.

Maybe we will have better luck with 10.9.3. Or, in the alternative hotspot manufacturers will have to come up with 5 GHz hotspots.

Cheers,

Don Barar
