mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Ok so Wifi is really starting to annoy now....

I have a 2013 Mac Air (about 1 month old). I upgraded to mavericks and now EVERYTIME the machine goes to sleep, i close the lid, whatever the wifi connection is shut down and on logging in again, the wifi doesn't connect. I have to manually turn off wifi and then turn on again before selecting my network (and usually needs 2 attempts).

This is unacceptable.

Does anybody else suffer from this issue? any ideas on how to fix it (other than reverting back to MLion - if that's even possible)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Kind Regards

Supersleb

You have probably moved from 802.11n 2.4GHz band, which is also occupied with Bluetooth to 802.11n 5GHz band, which can not collide with Bluetooth any way. After two days of research on my MBA I have found that bad Bluetooth interaction with 2.4GHz WiFi (802.11b/g/n). When I wanted to share the result, I found, that it had been "invented" long time ago by Supersleb. It is funny that the problem is still here. Actually, it is not so funny. Hope some future update solve this problem one day. I am on 10.9.5 now...still waiting.

It's amazing how each of us found a different solution. I also tried the usual (remove bluetooth plist, clear PRAM, etc...) and didn't work.

After a lot of config changes, HERE IS THE SOLUTION I FOUND which worked in my case:

- I've got two TP-Link routers at home. My MacBook Air (2014 version) was working perfectly with one of them but struggling with the other.

- I decided to do a factory reset on the router the Mac for some reason didn't like and.... IT WORKED!

- I did some further digging and found out that the reason for it was that per default the router works with AUTO channel allocation. When it was selecting channels 6-13 it would work...

- the problem I had is that the best & less crowded channel at my home was channels 1 and 2. My Macbook Air quite simply does not like channels 1 and 2 on Wifi.

- I have now forced the routers to use channels that the MBA does like and... it seems to be working fine!

Very strange, counter-intuitive (as it works fine on very crowded channels and doesn't on free channels!) so it looks like a very basic strange bug. But this workaround seems to work well for me! Hope it works for others as well.

I thought I would chip in here as I have just experienced WiFi disconnection issues on my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 (affecting DHCP) in OS 10.9. In my case it seems DHCP was incorrectly obtaining (or maybe incorrectly retaining) IP settings for the built in WiFi after sleep mode.

What seems to have worked for me (mentioned by others in this thread) is also referenced towards the bottom of the Apple Support document HT4628: . Wi-Fi: How to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connectivity

Specifically:

  1. Removing the Keychain entries of the type 'Airport network password' for the problem WiFi networks. N.B. remove from both the ‘Login’ and ‘System’ keychains
  2. Once removed reboot
  3. Rejoin the WiFi network. (You obviously need to re-enter the WiFi pwd)

In my case DHCP seems to be behaving again even after sleep mode.

PS

Just in case anyone technical from Apple development is looking into this for an underlying cause (to hopefully to fix the issue properly!), in my case prior to this problem OS9 was working fine for me on all my WiFi networks (three SSIDs in total) . However, when troubleshooting another WiFi device I had been experimenting with various WiFi setups changing channels, speed and authentication types etc whilst keeping the same SSID and same WiFi pwd. I suspect that in my case that some (WiFi security?) setting was stored in the original Keychain entries (i.e. from the original WiFi config) that has not been updated/refreshed by the usual methods available though the Network section of the System Preferences or WiFi Icon.

Hope this helps someone!

So...

I did some digging around on the internet last night after posting here again that I had not found a fix. I remembered that some Mavericks users were having the same problems with bluetooth/wifi after Mavericks was released.

Here's a link to an article with another possible fix. It's describes how to delete a bluetooth-related .plist file from your preferences. It seemed to help Mavericks users who were having problems.

http://www.imore.com/how-fix-mavericks-wi-fi-zapping-bluetooth

I tried this along with deleting any .plist from /Macintosh HD/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/ that looked like anything related to networking.

NetworkInterfaces.plist, preferences.plist, com.apple.airport.preferences.plist, com.apple.wifi.message-tracer.plist

Then rebooted.

Tried it last night, and I'm now able to stay connected on my 5 ghz network (which was constantly dropping before) and stay connected.

Still drops when the laptop is asleep, but better than nothing.

This morning, I was able to simply select my 5 ghz network, and the connection appears to stick.

As with any of these "fixes", this may or may not help anyone that is having problems. As you can see from reading this discussion, people have tried a variety things and there's currently not a consistent fix nor any acknowledgement from Apple as far as I know.

Anyway give the above a shot.

Ok this is very random but worked 100% so far. for all you with issues with wifi on mavericks or yosemite this really worked for me.

My wife has imac i have Macbook Pro...

We moved house 12 months ago set up everything but not apple tv.... it was plugged in but didnt set network.... in june we came back from holiday and i set up network for apple tv....few days later my wifes WIFI stopped working, she put her imac into sleep and wouldnt get connection after like it seems everyone here..... nothing worked. My macbook fine as i didnt put it to sleep.

SO we never use apple tv although connected but never turned on... my wife continued to have same problems as everyone here.. mine was fine as were all the other devices.

Few weeks ago we had some bad lightning and the wifi box blew up so a new one was purchased, my wife connected to the network as did i and as did 2 ipads 3 iphones... no issues...

MY WIFES imac worked perfectly..... Like MAGIC

Yesterday i started apple tv put it on the new network no problems all devices and mac book and imac perfect...

Today i put my macbook to sleep when my wife Unbeknown to me was watching APPLE TV ( NETFLIX) i started it again after about 20 min and the issue was a nightmare... same problems as everyone on here... my wife started imac from being turned off and no issues....

SO HERES WHAT I DID.... i turned apple tv OFF turned it back on again nothing changed i still had issues...I THEN DISCONNECTED APPLE TV from the NETWORK and let it turn off.... i came to my laptop restarted it from shutting down and guess what? no issues whatsoever...

SO FOR ME the issue is with APPLE tv on same network, surely this is why it only affects some macbooks not others.... also im running Yosemite and as i say never once had an issue until today when i put macbook to sleep with apple tv on...
