mac osx 10.9 Mavericks wifi issue

Ok so Wifi is really starting to annoy now....

I have a 2013 Mac Air (about 1 month old). I upgraded to mavericks and now EVERYTIME the machine goes to sleep, i close the lid, whatever the wifi connection is shut down and on logging in again, the wifi doesn't connect. I have to manually turn off wifi and then turn on again before selecting my network (and usually needs 2 attempts).

This is unacceptable.

Does anybody else suffer from this issue? any ideas on how to fix it (other than reverting back to MLion - if that's even possible)

Thanks in advance for any responses

Kind Regards

Supersleb

Seems that TheGuyintheProjection booth in the post above went to Edimax and downloaded one of their dongle drivers and has a workaround without using the dongle: just downlaod the driver he says. I had hoped that he would have explained how this works because I am always looking to learn more about software. Hardware is a drop dead easy but software is more difficult. As a scientist (biomechanics) X 40 years I have always pushed the limits with science. Unfortuanately Projectionbooth didn't help me out. I think he got mad 😠 for asking. Duh I really would like to know how this works without the dongle. Hopefully someone else will guide me through it without coping an attitude 😉. But maybe you could try the same thing and see if it works for you.

Heck I do not know. I bought a Edimax dongle and installed the whole 9 yards..... dongle and software. Works like a dream.

Projectionbooth is the guy claiming you can download the drivers without using the dongle. I aksed him for some info and he did not answer the question. So read his post and weep cause he does say what driver it is.

He makes fun of my dongle but my dongle works always all the time. Happy Dongling says PB and and I agree. Wanna bet his fix doesn't last? It sounds like a Vulcan mind meld from Star Trek. Somehow the Edimax mind melded with his Network preferences and poof magic it works. As he put it to me: " Your "fix" is perfectly fine for those that are fine with the staus quo and want to spend money". Seems to me the "status quo" is to complain and not bandaid the Wifi. So slowly bleed to death I say. My fix actually came with a rebuild of some files. So I moved my dongle over to an old Macbook and works screaming faster and farther than a brand new broadcom AE wireless card that I had installed in the 2008 model.

Really is $15-$20 for a freakin dongle is a lotta money to get one's wifi working again while waitng on Mac to get it right. Meanwhile all I read it people complaining (which they should do) but do not bother with the bandaid. Just keep on keeping on shutting off and on your wifi and turning off the bluetooth.

Most everybody on these lists have toys and apps galore and yet the thought of a $20 dongle horrifies them.

BTW I was also on the dread black screen forum for a while and found a work around that I used for a few months but Apple managed to fix that one for me with 10.9.1.

I never made fun of your dongle. Although, I wouldn't personally know. I was even on my way to buying my own, as I said, and found the drivers and thought I would try them on their own and see what happens. I have no idea what made me do it other than desperate for a fix. I had no expectations, wants or warrants, but it worked until the Public Release of 10.9.3. Even worked under the Public Seed of 10.9.3. But not so well now.

As I have said before, all I did was go to the Edimax site and see what they had to offer and there was the download link. I downloaded drivers for three dongles. Nothing special and how it works is immaterial. The big deal is that something worked! But all it seems and probably does is add resources for the internal hardware to access that Apple has yet to do. And again as I said before, it was on a whim that I tried this, and it was more magic than science. I didn't expect anything. So there . . .

If you are running 10.9.3 this is a moot point it won't work, as I have said before.

EW-7811UTC_Mac_driver_1.0.1.6.zip > Wlan_11ac_USB_MacOS10.9_Driver_v1027_UI_2.2.6 = Did not work.

EW7811Un_MacOS10.9_Driver_83.27.07_UI_2.0.2.zip > 3in1_Wlan_11n_USB_MacOS10.9_Driver_83.27.07_UI_2.0.2 = Worked the best prior to 10.9.3 Public Release. Spotty operation after. Am still running this with less than desirable results.

3in1_Wlan_11n_USB_MacOS10.8_Driver_83.26.06_UI_2.0.1.zip > 3in1_Wlan_11n_USB_MacOS10.8_Driver_83.26.06_UI_2.0.1 = Worked Prior to 10.9.3 Public Release. Spotty operation since.

OK. Happy? No more conjecture or inaccurate accusations? I'm done here and sorry that I posted recently. I have been posting and monitoring this thread for a while. If you have the time, and looks as though you do, go back, way back and read my earlier posts since you are so hungry for info.

I have been troubleshooting this Bluetooth/Wifi/Sleep problem with the Apple Wifi team, multiple visits to the Genius Bar and of course tried all the tips and fixes everywhere on the web, to no avail. Downloaded the new 10.9.4 update last night and boom! I'm back in business. The update is working! My Macbook Pro is running on all cylinders and I love it!

I am posting to confirm that upgrading to Mavericks (OS X 10.9.4) does NOT fix my issue.

Reiterating issue:

- My home network and all devices (both Apple and non-apple) were "happy"

- Upgrade to Mavericks on my MBP caused problems.

- Mavericks introduced a software BUG into the OS X, which halts Wifi connectivity if continuous packet exchange is not maintained. Hence the "ping" workaround seems to "solve" my problem.

With OS X 10.9.4 update, the problem manifests itself much later than previously. I have yet to make a study of it, but it take many minutes of network-inactivity before the problems is observed, where as in all Mavericks versions prior to 10.9.4, the drop in connectivity could be seen within a minute or two of network-inactivity.

In conclusion, whatever change Apple Wifi engineering team has made to the code, it has certainly changed the behavior, and unfortunately, it does give an "appearance" of it being fixed. This I fear, will make affected users complain less than before. If this is a tactic Apple is deploying, just to reduce volume of complains, vs actually addressing the issue, I would not be surprised.

10.9.4 actually made this worse!

Mid 2013 MBA 11" - tried everything suggested in the thread, even had Genius Bar replace the wifi card. Issues come and go. Reducing MTU seemed to have the best impact on stabilizing drops to less than one a day. Ran the 10.9.4 update this week hoping for and end to wifi drops. Now losing connection every 30-45 minutes with no pattern to why. Streaming, surfing, mail - just seems to drop at random.. Release DHCP and I am back in business- but I am out of business if I cannot hold a skype call or stream video for a presentation. All other devices on the network are happy and stable.

Looking at Windows machines at this point. If I am going to have to replace what was my go-to machine- I do not see a reason to spend that money with Apple. They are becoming more MSFT like all the time- and at least that system is open and chaotic enough to find a workaround. Glad Apple spent all that money to get 4K displays working for what might be the 5k people who need it- while Mail will not work properly with Google for a few million of us and wifi drops for no reason.

Are you listening Apple? How long do these threads need to be?

I encountered this issue today. The wifi per se automatically dropped out work (i.e., turn off ) around every 30 mins.

I went to system preference --network to turn on the wifi, which had no response at all. it was remaining status of turnoff.

then i had to restart MBP to awaken it working. However, the wifi did work only after restarting MBP while it dropped out work, in this way, it does not solves this problem at all. i also tried to shut down MBP and start it up by pressing command+alt+p+r keys . This try was also failed.

Btw, i never have this problem until today. I updated my MBP (early 2011 ) to Mac OS 10.9.4 on 9 july 2014.

Is there someone else have same problem ?

Jul 14, 2014 6:30 AM in response to Pery from Vienna

Just adding my brief experience with this problem. For last two months using refurb rMBP 13", early 2013, 2.6GHz, OSX version 10.9.4 build 13E28. Previously using MacMini without any WiFi problems. There are three WiFi networks in this building. A Cisco Airnet 2.5GHz, Airport Extreme running 2.4 and 5 GHz, Airport Express 2.4GHz g.

I was not having any problems with WiFi until today when it kept dropping connection to the Cisco network and would not automatically connect to any network. I tried the early remedy suggestion by deleting wifi settings, switch off wake from sleep, deleting Keychain airport entries and repair permissions from recovery drive (only iBooks and Safari permissions repaired - no airport etc). THIS DID NOT WORK.

Then I remembered that I had taken the rMBP into Apple Genius bar at the weekend to deal with a slow write issue to the SD reader. The Apple Genius was very knowledgable and helped resolve the SD reader problem. He had connected the rMBP to store servers with a Thunderbolt bridge.

When I looked at Network Preferences I found that there was a Thunderbolt Bridge service added in the left pane. I deleted this in the pane and also deleted it from the Manage Virtual Interfaces drop down list (accessed from the settings 'cog' icon at the bottom of the pane). Then I reconnected to the Cisco network and !Presto! it connected and was stable for at least 30 minutes. Prior to this it would only stay connected for 10-15 seconds.
