Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

What has happened to Apple?

Okay. I've been an Apple fan since the beginning, but things are falling apart... Mavericks is buggy. Mac Mail hangs ALL OF THE TIME.. I've never had to force quit as much as I do now. My iPhone/iPad is buggy and iTunes is just going nuts. If I go to a song, it just starts flipping out and moving to other songs (and it never did that before)... Sometimes when I end a call, it never ends until I shut down my iPhone and restart it... And don't get me started on final CutPro X. I really hope that Apple follows Steve Job's ideas, because since his passing, Apple has not been as reliable and as awesome as it used to be.. Please fix... I'm using the latest MBP Retina and newest iMac and iPhone. (I liked the way it was. I wish I could downgrade)... Thanks..

iMac, Latest OS

My 2 cents:

My Mavericks experience is very different. Works great. Faster than ML was. I have a MBP 8,2 with 8 GB of RAM and a 500 HD SSD. I'm on my computer constantly, email, writing, audio recording and editing, video editing, photography, games; it syncs perfectly with my phone and my ipad.

I've been a Mac guy since 1984, and on these forums for about the past ten years. My opinion from that experience is that the vast majority of problems that people have with their Macs are not because the OS is bad, but because of:

  1. Crapware: "cleaners", "haxies", "optimizers", "defragmenters", "utilities", and antivirus software. Poorly written, unnecessary, damaging crap that people insist on installing. Usually people who are recent converts from Windowsland.

Common culprits here are third party scanner and printer apps from the printer manufacturer.

  2. Expecting one's seven year old apps to work perfectly with a state-of-the-art, new OS. I mean, you can't have it both ways.
  3. Insufficient RAM for what one is trying to do.
  4. Insufficient free hard drive space.
  5. A processor or HD that is too slow for what one is trying to do.
  6. expecting the OS to work perfectly, but not having any knowledge of basic troubleshooting and maintenance maneuvers.

So maybe the problem is not Mavericks.

Arthur is 100% correct.

You can all keep complaining, but this is support forum so go and read the terms & conditions when your posts disappear.

Complaints can be submitted to Apple directly - https://www.apple.com/feedback

Since nobody took me up on this offer TO HELP YOU, I'll repeat it once more…

Download http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck Open the app to create a report, post it here.

We will then try to help you solve your issues, there is a very real possibility Mavericks is running poorly because of something you have installed. The etrecheck report will show that.

Telling us that 'Mavericks is broken' with no information doesn't help anyone.

Oct 31, 2013 6:11 PM in response to dwb

Don't forget Apple has moved to a yearly release with Mt Lion being mostly a refinement of Lion but Mavericks having a significant amount of under the hood chnages.

This is entire of Apple's choosing though. Their schedules with OS X, the schedule with iOS, they schedule with whatever else they're doing… and don't forget, how much on engineering resources Apple's chooses to put to it all. No-one sets the pace other than Apple.

Apple has one very bad habit in my opinion in that they think it's ok to take steps back in order to take steps forward. One's customers should never be asked to do that without fair warning and Apple chooses to do it time and time again.

It seems to be the accepted case with apple now that they release things once for the publicity and for the people who really want it, then again when they have fixed all the things that dont work, but really should upon launch.

It does seem that now they tend limit the amount of options the users has to personalise and control many features on the OS fror no reason. Icloud is a good example, I dont want to use it I dont like it that much but I am also careful about what information I put on a cloud system but Apple seem to really want people to use it to the point of making things difficult if you dont.

I would shutdown & disconnect those external WD hard drives immediately!

There have been alarming data loss issue with external WD drives, it seems to be predominantly the RAID versions & users that had WD disk software installed, but there is no reason to keep them attached if you system is already being weird.

WD is looking into it.

Oct 31, 2013 8:27 PM in response to Russell Barrans

  1. you have a ton of plugins, third party preference panes, and login items. You are a promiscuous downloader!
  2. there are a number of items that have failed and are probably causing your problems. For example: WD helper. This is crapware that comes with your Western Digital HD. It is not compatible with Mavericks. Probably impossible to uninstall, too. All the Lexmark stuff. Facebook Videochat. MLbam nexdef, whatever that is. More unnecessary haxies in your User Logins.
  3. I would get rid of most of this stuff, but that's just me. Is all that really necessary for the work you are doing on your computer?
  4. It's such a mess that if it were me, I'd backup my documents and erase the HD and do a clean install. And then not install all the crapware again.

Some quick etrecheck tips from Barney-15E - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5507971?answerId=23618027022#23618027022

The big things to look for in EtreCheck are the StartupItems, LaunchAgents, LaunchDaemons, and Kernel Extensions.

Those are hooked into the system so can cause issues if not well written and up to date. I'm always wary of anything in StartupItems because Apple told developers to stop using that years ago. If they haven't rewritten their helpers as LaunchAgents or Daemons, I worry about how good the software is in the first place.

Removing system level items can be difficult, you need to look at why they are there & decide if you need them.

If you have no idea what it is search for the string in Google & look for ways to uninstall or find the latest release of that software if it is Mavericks compatible. Kernel Extensions live in /Library/Extensions.

If you are concerned about deleting files move them to an external disk so you have backups to restore if you ever need to do so. You will need to reboot to get them flushed from the system.

LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons are mostly harmless, but they are potentially another process that is running or potentially crashing other apps etc. They can be deleted for the most part & they shouldn't pop back up unless an app re-generates them. The easiest way to kill them is to remove the app via its uninstaller or delete the com.company.application.plist in the relevant folders (once again in /Library/Launch… or ~/library/Launch… & reboot.

Also check preference panes are up to date or Mavericks compatible.

All the Internet plugins can cause slowdowns in Safari or any other webkit views (like html Mail messages).

Check they are up to date.

They will probably be inside ~/Library/Internet plugins or the main /Library/Internet plugins if you want to remove them. Also rip out ant Safari extensions (or at least update them).

Once the crap is diminished reboot & see if it has settled down. If you want to be super cautious go and search the logs for the application identifier strings (com.company.application) there is a chance they have been shouting at you via the logs. /Applications/Utilities/Console will show you all the logs in one place.

Oct 31, 2013 8:52 PM in response to Russell Barrans

Mail was clearly eating up all your CPU & amassing lots of RAM, so quit that for now. Hopefully it will become stable once the system can run without old third party code breaking parts of it. It could just be updating indexes etc.

Also don't forget a really simple test if you want to know if an issue is inside your user account or in the system. Create a new user account & login. If the issue is gone you know you need to start investigating inside your own ~/Library (which can be opened via the Finders Go to Folder… menu). Otherwise the problem is outside your account.

Oct 31, 2013 9:00 PM in response to Russell Barrans

This output is mostly for you to review to see if there is anything that you don't think should be there. You installed all of this stuff; however, you might not know what actually installed it as it was bundled with some other software. If you have an idea of what it does, and you think that function might have something to do with a problem you are seeing, then you might want to uninstall that program to see if anything gets fixed. To uninstall, go to the developer's website and find an uninstaller or directions on how to do it. It might be on the install DMG, also.

A lot of this stuff I have never heard of, so I don't know what it does (without googling), and I haven't seen it implicated in the past. But, the past was a different OS.

Startup Items:

HP IO - Path: /Library/StartupItems/HP IO

HP Trap Monitor - Path: /Library/StartupItems/HP Trap Monitor

ProTec6b - Path: /Library/StartupItems/ProTec6b

Qmaster - Path: /Library/StartupItems/Qmaster

StartupItems are always a red flag as that technology was deprecated years ago. If the software hasn't been updated since then, or if it still uses that method, I wonder about the software.

ProTec is some sort of licensing scheme. They seem to always be buggy and slow to update.

Qmaster was part of Final Cut Studio (2009)

HP crap is probably a bunch of monitoring items for your printer. Probably harmless, but I don't find any of that stuff useful.

Kernel Extensions:

com.LivestreamProcaster.driver.ProcasterAudioRedirector (2.0.0)

Bad kernel extensions usually manifest in kernel panics--when the screen goes gray and it says to restart. However, they could still cause odd behavior. I don't know what that is, though, and hadn't seen it implicated anywhere. That doesn't mean it hasn't caused problems--it could have popped up on forums I don't frequent.

Problem System Launch Daemons:

[failed] com.apple.wdhelper.plist

I have no idea why a hard drive needs a launch daemon. The IO is built into the OS. Adding on kludges can only cause issues. If a hard drive needs to provide help, it is too complex.

OMG. How long does it take for you to log in? Do you actually use all of that crap?

FreeMemory is likely useless as the memory management has change completely in Mavericks.

Again, a lot of that stuff baffles me. Isn't Transmit an FTP client? Do you do that many file transfers to have it start up at each login?

You have a ton of stuff loading onto the system. If it is useful and up to date, then it is likely ok. If there is stuff there that you no longer use, or worse, you thought you had removed, then get rid of them. They certainly aren't helping.

Another place to look is in Console, All Messages. There will be a ton of messages that mean nothing to you or me. However, if you see things repeating continuously, expecially Throttling and Respawn, those indicate broken services that are trying to start.
