Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick. I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!). Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail. When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render. There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

The source of my information are the several posts on this forum as well as dozens of other forums as well as the experiences of my coworkers who are all on MPB Retina systems running clean installations, the feedback from my friends who are running Mavericks .... I think a simple honest Google search will show that moving to Mavericks from Mountain Lion installation that was performing quite satisfactorily has caused major issues .... and so of course it is MY problem becuase I made the choice to "upgrade" and render my system practically unusable ...

Basically you cannot really take a resource hungry OS that cripples a stout system and blame it all on the user, accusing them of being uninformed, or unwilling to do Apple's QA for them, or being internet morons who love to litter their systems with crapware ....

Mavericks is a dawg. I already made the mistake of updating ... now I'll wait for the patch and use my Mountain Lion system instead ...

I love Apple's stuff but at least I'm honest .... when they drop the ball just say it ... they're a software and hardware company not demigods, they do make errors ....

You can't possibly speak for all users having issues with their Mac and OS X Mavericks.

Everyone's Mac is different and different users are experincing different issues.

Your less than one year MacBook can't run Mavericks well because your MB doesn't have enough RAM, doesn't have enough hard drive space, has incompatible software or connected hardware or has "crapware" installed like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, any type of hard drive, memory or system "cleaning" apps that are installed that are junk and robbing your system performance.

You are not updating any of your major third party software!

If you have antivirus software installed, this is not necessary on a Mac and AV software can slow your Mac, also.

It seems all you want to do is just rant and rave instead of getting your issues resolved.

You are not telling us any specifics about your system that can help you with your issues.

Alll you keep saying is I keep my Mac Apple-centric and have nothing on my system causing issues!

How do you know that you don't have something causing your Mac's major malfunction with Mavericks!

I have a four year old Mac and Mavericks is running like a champ!

There are millions of users NOT having any major performance issues with Mavericks!

IF you think your MacBook is so pristine and you shouldn't be having issues, please ,PULEEZE post a brand new thread and download, install and run Etrecheck.

Copy/paste and Post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software.

It's a troubleshooting forum, dude. What do you expect to see? And considering the many many millions of people using Mavericks (you can Google that as well) than a miniscule percentage here with problems (and in other forums) is hardly a true representation of how Mavericks is behaving. That is not to say that there may be a few tiny hiccups that will be ironed out with updates as has happened with EVERY OS in history. But nothing too noticable here on my Macs.

If your system is practically unusable, then you need to do some serious troubleshooting or take it to an Apple Store to be looked at. Complaining here and doing nothing won't help fix your issues.

Cheers

The Apple Store won't be able to fix the OS, that's my point ...

I've tried several troubleshooting tips as many othes have and wll wit hthe same result

"didn't solve the problem"

The forums are full of well meaning people but they all have ppl barking up the wrong tree. I feel sorry for ppl spending hours of time frustrated and getting the same result ... it's a bit insane to keep attacking the same problem with the wrong set of tools and getting the same disappointing results ... like I said, I'll wait for them to patch the OS and fix their issues .... because the issues never existed til Mavericks made its way onto my system and as I've mentioned befoe my systems is VERY clean, lean and mean .... at least when Mountain Lion was on there :-/

So you don't wish to admit that your system may be at fault? You don't wish to do anything to troubleshoot it? You refuse to believe that millions are having no issues yet you are? You are waiting for some magic 'patch'? Then I seriously don't think anybody here can do anything more to try to help you and that you are simply wasting yours and other users time. All you seem to want to do is thread crash someone else's thread who were at least trying to solve their problem. Have you posted any crash reports? An etrecheck report?

http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

A rundown of the symptoms you are experiencing? Listed any third party software you are running? Detailed any updates you may or may not have done?

No, so I don't believe you wish to solve the issues that you are experiencing.

Good Luck

I have already spent the hours of troubleshooting, that's why I'm trying to save some others some time ... look at the enormous amount of people having issues ... it's unreasonable ... if youve read my previous posts my machine is lean and clean, I'll restate again that I tried dozens of troubleshooting ideas, disk diagnostics, etc. etc. etc. I have done all of it and I'm telling you that none of that is the issue, the issue is the OS. Simple rule of troubleshooting ... when a problem occurs, what was the last thing you did? and having 2 similar systems one running ML and one Mav? and the only one with issues is the one upgraded to Mav which thousands of other users are also experiencing performance issue with ???? let's use our ability to troubleshoot wisely and stop chasing rabbits .... anyway, yes, that is my point, there is nothing this forum can offer until Apple fixes the perf issues with Mavericks.

Until then I'm stuck with ML or Win 7 ....

My bad for adopting early .....

Hi Michael,

I don't believe even an etrecheck report would be reliable in this case as they can be easily edited. This poster really has no interest in solving their issues but instead prefers to rant about Mavericks because they have failedto upgrade successfully. Only by opening their own thread with a proper list of their issues and attempts at fixing them should we bother with them. They have already sidetracked the original posters thread by hi-jacking it and can now be best left to their own devices, which apparantly are not very well maintained. 😉

Cheers

It's also possible that the installer failed to install some components correctly.

Other users on here have had apps that appeared corrupted. Simply backing up & running the installer again resolved the issues.

The installer will overwrite system files in place, but not overwrite your user & app data. So if that doesn't help the apps & user data are the next issue to isolate if you can be bothered.

Hardly any of the millions of users seem to be having problems. Many more seemed to, and still are, having problems with Mountain Lion if you care to look there.

So, really, don't bother posting if you can't be bothered fixing your poor install.

Goodbye and good luck. (Windows 7 indeed! lol)

It's unfortunate that this thread has turned into a debate over whether or not Mavericks is a buggy or bloated update. I think a couple of things are clear. (1) plenty of people have upgraded and are pleased with the results (2) many have upgraded and have had issues. I was in the latter category.

There is no doubt that this version of the OS has added a slew of features and includes lots of "under the hood" changes that could wreck havoc with older applications. I am guessing that the new feature set may well be taxing my 6 year old CPU, smallish (500gb) hard drive and paltry 4 gb of RAM.

Bottom line is that my system running Mountain Lion works fine, so I have to decide if the new features are worth the effort of trying to upgrade again after stripping out any apps that are problematic.

I don't think it's fair to ask a company, especially an innovative one like Apple, to ensure that their upgrades work on legacy hardware (6 years is certainly legacy in this context). I always felt Windows was held back by this. So if a new OS is compelling I'll buy a new computer if needed.

All that said, it would be nice if there was a compilation of known (commonly used) applications that don't play nice with Mavericks. It seems like the perfect use for a wiki or equivalent wherein users would post their own research to save others the time.

I plan on running etrecheck this weekend and post here to see if anyone can pick out any obvious Mavericks culprits. Thanks to all who have posted helpful info, and Happy Thanksgiving!
