Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick. I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!). Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail. When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render. There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

I found a memory hungry process associated with Chrome - top process in the screen grab below.

User uploaded file

It was - as you can see - using half of my 4GB.

I did a force quit and the disk paging has diminished considerably and the machine (iMac running Mavericks 10.9.5) is now running faster.

Oh, worth checking this out too regarding Chrome - https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/LfBqIlfFoSo%5B1-25-false%5 D

I've got a 2008 imac, appalling after 'upgrading to Mavericks', have 10.6 on a partition so same computer, when I go back to it it's a joy.

After reading here I ditched Chrome about 2 weeks ago and just use Firefox and Opera - the difference is amazing. Still slow to start up but at least now it's got back to being useable.

SO - Thank you Thank you Thank you to people on here and to anyone new with the same problem - DITCH CHROME !!!!!!

Hey guys,

I have a solution that worked for me.

I bought my iMac new and it was running blazing fast, then a month later Mavericks came out so I upgraded to it. I immediately noticed my computer was incredibly sluggish so I tried reformatting and everything under the stars to get it to work.. Nothing helped. I just stopped using the brand new iMac and happened to get a job where they gave me a Macbook.

Several months go by without me touching the iMac. I get a roommate who doesn't have a computer so I tell him he can use the iMac but it's slow. I made an account for him and immediately notice it's very fast.

I make his account an admin, delete my account, create a new account for myself, and voila, everything is fast again. It's that easy.

I suppose some file or data associated with my old user account was the culprit, and every time I tried to reformat it, it kept that data, but by actually hard-deleting the user it got rid of that data.

Hope this helps someone.

Welcome to the forum, but I'm sorry to say you aren't using it efficiently.

This is a very old thread, I suspect most of the information is no longer relevant and I may be the only one still following it (I'm certainly not sure why I still am).

You haven't fully explained your issue, which is the most important thing you can do. We need lots of detail.

You responded to the OP (the person who started this discussion seventeen months ago) with information he didn't ask for, so I'm not sure anybody knows what it means.

You are always welcome to read through these old threads to see if they offer any information that can help you out, but if you don't find anything it's always best to start your own discussion, again with lots of details describing everything you are experiencing. You will attract a lot more help faster that way.
