Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick. I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!). Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail. When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render. There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

Linc doesn't usually respond to postings such as yours and is likely not even monitoring this very old discussion.

Start a new discussion describing the problems you are having in as much detail as you can and Linc is more apt to find it there. You will also attract many more troubleshooters who may have some ideas for you.

That's just the way this forum works best.

How to Fix A Very Slow Mac Running 10.9.+ ( what worked for me)

Background:

I an running an iMac 27” late 2011 model with 200+ gb of free space and 32GB of Other World Computing Ram in it.

Since I have had it, it has always run just fine till I installed 10.9. It was fine for 2 weeks but then kept re-indexing itself.

I had reinstalled the OS from a Clean install and it was better but still it kept on re-indexing itself.

I had called AppleCare 3 times and spoken with level 3 tech support who ran me though all kinds of special file deletions but it never fixed the issue.

After several months I had given up, I would turn off spotlight all together.

Then today it became so slow it was unusable and unresponsive so I called again. This time we got.

If your like me and have been using your Mac OS system for many years you have gone through all the OSX versions, upgraded and changed your virus protection along the way and have probably installed a couple of 3rd party apps and in that case you may have some lingering files in places they should not be any more.

So this is what I found.

1. I had old virus applications for Intego, Symantec and Sophos laying in various folders. Even though the apps were deleted the scan engines were still active in Launch Agents and LaunchDaemons folders.

2. All I had to do was copy the folder to the desktop then delete the contents. Boom it worked fine again.

(* Please note, do not delete the contents of the folders without making a copy of the master folder to the desktop in case you want to put the items back and test them 1 by 1 to find which one of them is causing the issue)*

So where do you find these folders?

MacHD / Library /

LaunchAgents

LaunchDaemons

Then also check out you LaunchAgents folder in your User Folder as well.

- To access that in the Finder, Select the GO Menu, then hold the Option Key to reveal your user library.

- For me in mine I had dropbox, Sophos, VMware and Stuffit expander. I am not saying these caused any slow downs but as a precautionary action I removed them to test them one at a time. Without them in in there its working better than it ever has.

You Can copy the folders the desktop and delete the startup items from within. Then you can put the items back 1 at a time to test which ones if any are causing you problems.

In fact you can put the items back slowly one by one then restart to see if which is really causing you the issue.

In my case it was all my old Virus Protection App’s leave behinds.

So I hope this method helps someone else out there whose machine is slow as molasses.

Right! We should accept that Maverick is terrible! I have searched most of the forums, there is no way to make Mavericks compatible with my Macbook Pro and also others could not do this! I am an apple user but unfortunately this IOS is shameful!

We should accept that your description of Mavericks as terrible, may be flawed.

Mavericks is compatible with just about all Macs from 2009 onwards and some as far back as 2007, so just how old is this Mac of yours?

IOS is an operating system for iPhones and iPads, it has nothing to do with your Mac.

Why don't you start again, with some actual detail this time.

I followed the step one instructions and got this message in TextEdit:

Oct 16 20:04:46 llyrs-mbp kernel[0] <Debug>: Process Setup Assistant [217] disabling system-wide I/O Throttling

If someone could shine some light on the meaning of this message, that would be awesome, as I have been encountering the same difficulties since upgrading to mavericks.

Let me point out several things...

This thread is almost a year old an may no longer apply to your situation.

You have not explained anything about issues you may be observing, so if anybody else is still monitoring this they won't be able to help you.

Linc does not normally respond to "me too" requests if that's what you are looking for and has probably stopped monitoring this conversation.

Step one of Linc's instructions are designed to produce something like this:

kernel[0] <Debug>: Previous Shutdown Cause: -128

whereas your's indicates that something has disabled your ability to check for that.

You will get much faster help from more people if you will just start your own discussion and include a detailed description of the issue(s) you are experiencing. Don't post the results of Linc's instructions or any other until someone ask you for additional information. That's just the way this forum works best.

I've been having problem with my Mac Mini(early 2009) ever since I upgraded to Mavericks. Main problem is with Apps starting up and opening new windows. After reading through this thread, I open the Consol and looked at the error logs. I saw a lot of errors like:

10/18/14 2:28:36.825 PM osascript[677]: Error loading /Library/ScriptingAdditions/SerialPort X.osax/Contents/MacOS/SerialPort X: dlopen(/Library/ScriptingAdditions/SerialPort X.osax/Contents/MacOS/SerialPort X, 262): no suitable image found. Did find:

/Library/ScriptingAdditions/SerialPort X.osax/Contents/MacOS/SerialPort X: mach-o, but wrong architecture

SerialPort X is a scripting addition I was using in 2003! And have not used it for years. I have removed it along with a bunch of other Scripting additions and no more spinning beach ball. It makes some sense, AppleScript is "involved" with launch apps. If something is interfering with AppleScript it could slow startup.d

YMMV

Just hope this may help anyone else in this thread.

I totally agree, Mavericks has caused me to think Mac is now a Windows PC. Delays, spinning wheels, latency, recovery and disappearing windows, rebuilds on login, exacerbated wait times from screen savers.....

What have you screwed up Apple?

It used to be friendly, fast, and I never complained. My Mac is 2012, 8 GB Ram, all top notch. Almost no memory used as we use servers.

And the iTunes interface absolutely *****! Steve Jobs said make it great they will come. Now its sell it first.

The ITunes sales and APP store sales 1st screens upon opening are annoying, commodities rubbish. Who signed off on the interface? Confusing, hard to navigate. A real bummer. Fire the chief architect. start over. Or just go back, it was far better. It's "feel" would never pass Jobs nose.

Make iTunes great again. Listen to Jobs. He's crying.

You have the Genieo adware/malware installed and needs to be properly uninstallled.

http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-genieo/

Ditch ALL Googlewares. They are ALL a serious resource hog on the OS X system.

https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/95319?hl=en

If you do not like Apple's Safari web browser, download, install and try Mozilla FireFox, instead.

The current, up-to-date version of FireFox is fully compatible with OS X and is regularly updated by the great developers of the Mozilla group.

I have, also, stopped using the Google search engine, regularly and use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine.

Also, what is not helping your Mac, at all, you have install 3 virtual environment applications (VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox AND Parallels Desktop). Running more than one of these can cause conflicts with your system and OS. Pick the best one to use regularly and properly uninstall the other two.

You should consider installing more.RAM, too!

Your year and Mac model should be able to take a total of 8 GBs of RAM.

Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

Good Luck!
