Mac slow after installing Maverick

I have a late 2007 imac 2.8ghz with 6gb RAM. I had the same slow response issue. I took it in to the store today ad the hardware checked out. The technician suggested I move big folders (I had a 120gb folder) off the desktop and into a subfolder. I think he said that everything on the desktop gets read when the imac boots up.

He also suggested that I turn the FileVault OFF. I can't remember when I turned this on. Well it took a few hours for the FileVault to decrypt my hard drive. However, the iMac is running super fast again. So maybe check under System Preferences, Security and Privacy, FileVault and see if it's enabled. If it is, for an older machine, consider disabling it if this makes sense for your situation. For those of you with newer machines and SSD drives, this should not be an issue.

Hope this helps some of you with older machines.

It is a comparative statement mate.

Bottom line is, regardless of all the excuses made on behalf of Apple, they stuffed up and wont admit it.

If they stuffed up then what not all of the many many millions of Mavericks users be seeing this? There certainly seems to be a severe lack of evidence on that. My five Macs are running faultlessly on Mavericks. You need to look closer to home and so some serious troubleshooting.

I have an early 2009 MBP (15" 2GHz i7 CPU) and upgraded to 8 GB RAM. It made a world of difference. After learning how easy it was to update the RAM I am planning on replacing the hard drive with a SSD for even better performance. I hope this works for others with this problem. Depending on your machine, this is probably the best first place to start after trying all the software solutions (clearing caches, wiping preferences, reinstalling the OS and adding 3rd party apps one at a time).

FWIW, I just saw a speed up after turning off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" when on the power adapter.

1. Go to System Preferences -> Energy Saver

2. Select "Power Adapter" tab

3. Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" checkbox

Basicallly just a Terminal Command to delete all the software. Still testing to see if that makes login speed better.

I know that a lot of folks have performed this surgery over the past couple of years. Some are just concerned about allowing Google (or any app) to be able to update itself without any type of notification or permission while others felt the process slowed their Mac. Since I don't have a problem with either of these, I have not done so.

I would be very surprised if it makes login any faster as it should not involve any of that software. It might speed up the boot process by a microsecond or so while the LaunchAgent/LaunchDaemon are loaded. It looks like it will run as soon as it has Internet connectivity and checks to see if any updates are available every ~59 minutes.

Time for me to pile on to the discussion:

I spent almost 2 days doing the following and there is a noticeable improvement in performance.

1) Back up my MacBook Pro to a Time Machine volume

2) Boot Mac in recovery mode

3) Use Disk Utilities in Recovery Mode to erase the main volume

4) Reboot and let the recovery process begin

5) Select option to install OS on the erased volume (in this case, Mountain Lion :-( )

6) After OS install, go to the App Store and re-install Mavericks from there - also reboot and get the updates ....

7) Go to Applications > Utilities > Migration Assistant and restore your Data / Documents, etc.

Doing this clean OS install has helped ... it's still a bit slow on the performance side because it IS Mavericks however I can actually live with it ... Now I flee more comfortable adding RAM to my system to increase performance ... but adding RAM without doing a fresh OS install is a waste of time ...

FYI, Linc does not often follow old long discussions such as this, so he probably won't be back to respond.

You can read my response to the last person that had a "-60" cause and if that doesn't help you need to start a new discussion and describe your problem in much greater detail than you have here. That way you will get current users to offer additional help much faster than you will here.

People I need some help.

Recently I installed Mavericks on my macbook pro mid 2012. I did that after changing the hard drive to SSD Kingston 240gb. I have 8gb ram. Before changing the hard drive i had mavericks on a regular HDD and it was quite alright. Then my hard drive got faulty and the laptop was really slow. So i changed to SSD. I installed mavericks from a bootable usb with os x and it turned out that the system is really, and i mean reaaally slow. I did most of the advices from this forum (repairing the disc perimissions, disk repair, System Management Controller reset, checked the system monitor and the CPU and other things are alright (it shows that os x does not take all the available RAM), i did the syslog command from Linc Davis, and checked the mac with etrecheck. And nothing worked. So i went to recovery mode, erased the disk, created a new partition and reinstalled the system from recovery mode. It didn't help either. It's a bit better, but it's still so slow that it's unusable.

There is something peculiar as it shows in the disk utility that SMART status of the SSD hard drive is not supported. However, the hard drive is brand new, I did a new parition, there are no programs installed apart from the ones that come with the os x. I am sorry that the message is so long, but i didn't know what might be useful to resolve this,

You'll get better results by starting a new discussion describing your problems and wait for somebody to ask you for the type of data you've posted here, since not all troubleshooters are looking for the same kind of information.
