Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick. I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!). Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail. When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render. There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

Everyone's issues for a slowing are all different.

Please start a new individual discussion about your Mac issues and not keep adding to another user's dicussion threads.

By doing this, we can give individual attention to your Mac issues as well as give the users who help or solve your Mac issues the appropriate credit.

Thank You.

Hy, I solved my problem with unrecognized devices and Maverick slow down like this:

I reset the System Management Controller (SMC):

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964

I didn't notice any indication that the SMC reset occurred. Some say that the MagSafe power adapter LED may blink. Mine didn't.

However, after restarting, my Mac could recognize devices (camera, iPhone, USB stick) and Maverick was super fast. Even faster than my previous Mountain Lion.

Hope this helps!

Hey there,

Sorry to hear of your frustrations. I have installed Mavericks on four different machines—3 iMacs and 1 MacBook Pro. Mavericks is much slower than Snow Leopard/Mountain Lion on the older iMacs. In fact, I think it's slower on all the machines. It needs ram. If you are running only 2-4 Gb of ram, then your performance will be poor in my experience.

This is not a highly efficient OS, but also not inhibitive like you are experiencing. Either your machine does not have enough ram, is too old, does not have enough hard drive space, or something else. Sorry... things you've already heard, obviously.

My sister-in-law tried the RAM upgrade, she has 8 GB in her new MacBook Pro and it's still slow as molasses, everything she does is a beach-ball. She upgraded to Mavericks last month and had her machine in the Apple Stiore several times trying to figure out why it is such a dog, after charging her for additional RAM the problem was not solved .... I told her not to spend anotehr penny on hardware ... it's a bloated OS.... nothing can be done really. That's why I got hte Chromebook, to get actual work done... what a huge disappointment it is to have a $1,300 door stop

The Chromebook is a poor product but it actually let's me get work done. I'm sick of looking at a beachball for 45 sec to 1 minute jsut to open a simple text editor. At least the Chromebook let's me get to iCould before the sun sets. Mavericks is a disappointing bloated OS ... I jsut had this comiserating session with my sister in lsaw who was duped into upgrading to 8 GB of RAM only to discover it dodn't help a thing. Thanks to the "geniuses" at the Appel Store :-/ What a HUGE disappointment this OS is.

Why don't you have your sister place her own dedicated post and download, install and run an etrecheck report.

Etrecheck was developed as a simple Mac diagnostic reporting tool by a regular Apple Support forum user and technical support contributor named Etresoft.

Etrecheck is a small, unobstrusive app that compiles a static snapshot of your entire Mac hardware system and installed software.

This is a free app that has been honestly created to provided help in diagnosing issues with Macs running the new OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

It is not malware and can be safely downloaded and installed onto your Mac.

Copy/paste and post its report here in another reply thread so that we have a complete profile of your Mac's hardware and installed software so we can all help with your Mac performance issues.

thewesternfront if you do not start your own Discussion, you will not solve your own problem.

If your sister in lsaw does not start her own Discussion, she will not solve her own problem either.

Thank you for hte suggestion. We did run etrecheck on both systems, hers and mine and in both cases there was nothing out of of the ordinary. I have literally done everything under the sun .... I'm not trying to bea d**k, I am very loyal to Apple products. but I think the hard-core loyalists won't admit that Apple screwed the pooch on this one. There are thousands of posts on this topic. System is running smooth as silk, install Mavericks, instant doorstop. So many people have been deeply disappointed trying the many many suggestions from kind and well meaning people who seem to sincerely want to help. But unless they can take the bloat out of the OS, re-compile it and redistribute it, I'm afraid that hunting down 3'rd party drivers, upgrading memory, deleting Chrome Browser, running a multiplicity of diagnostic tools, re-installing the entire OS (blech) ... are not going to fix what's inherently wrong with the OS. It's apparently too feature rich and performance is really bad ... I'm so disappointed that I'm turning away from Apple's products at this point.

I tend to agree with you. I have read thousands of solutions to the problem and frankly, I dont have enough time in my life to try them all. The bottom line is that no-one from Apple is prepaed to admit that Mavericks is a dog.

My solution was expensive 16gigs of memory and a 1 terrabyte SSD. One would expect spectacula performance from this set up, but all I have is the performance i had before upgrading to Maverdog.

I used to boast about my Apple Macbook Pro compared to those Windows beasts, but seems Apple have succeeded in bringing themselves into camp mediocrity witht eh rest of the zombie hoard.

And please, the usual ones that have a shot at me for seeming to be critical - not interested. O.K.?

:^)

I'm more than happy to say when Apple makes mistakes.

Your experience with 10.9 is not what I personally have seen on Macs I have upgraded, hence the suggestions to look at what is installed.

If you have an external HD backup the Mac(s), erase and clean install 10.9, if it is still bad take it back to the Apple Store - it could be a hardware fault that has manifested with the new OS (sometimes OS's place new demands on the hardware which can look like the OS is at fault like the 'known GPU' issue with 'MacBookPro6,2' that makes 10.9 look bad.

A 'reinstall of OS X' is not a clean install, please confirm if you erased the disk before the (re)install.

It's very frustrating when it doesn't work which is why it can help to be methodical and take it back to a default state. Migration Assistant will move data back to the Mac if you want to restore it in one go (I'd avoid this if the Mac is OK & manually reinstate what you need).

If you provide more info (like model info or etrecheck reports) we may be able to help, otherwise we are left watching your despair, sorry it's not fun for us either.

What changed, you said it was going 'like the wind a month' ago?

Robgee99 wrote:

Clone my drive accross using an external casing.

Now the thing goes like the wind. Better than new and pre-Mavericks.

Care to post an EtreCheck report? We are here to try to help, it sounds like you might have cloned over all the data from the old disk which may have also cloned your old problems to the new disk?

We keep suggesting you post EtreCheck reports because we have seen it help with other users issues, you can just keep complaining if you think it helps but we need specific info to be able help you in any way.
