Mac slow after installing Maverick

Hi,

as others are reporting, I've got a lot of lag on my Mac after installing Maverick. I have to keep waiting for things to happen (it's like using my little Windows laptop!!). Especially Chrome shows this behaviour and Mail. When I switch to the application or open a tab it takes ages for it to render. There seems to be a lot more (audible) harddrive activity.

Here's an observation - anybody else have the same thing?

My wife and I use the audible/verbal time announcement, it was set up that way before the migration. I was using the (5+ year old) iMac, and heard both the male voice she chooses, and the Glados / Good News voice that I use - simultaneously. That had never happened before, only after the Mavericks upgrade.

Now, I've switched off the audible announcement in both of our profiles... but the announcements keep coming. They are not simultaneous anymore, I only hear Glados. But the checkbox is deactivated for "Announce the time". Clearly, this aspect is not working correctly.

I have just upgraded to a new MacBook, and am having speed issues, forst with Mountain Lion and now with Mavericks. It seems as though almost all operations, even selecting a file in the Finder, bring up the beach ball of death, and opening applications like Keynote or Pages can take 30 or more seconds. I am not here to knock Apple, although as a 20+ year user I am disappointed since this is the first time I have encountered anything lke this, but I am lost as to where to begin to correct this. Below is the latest EtreCheck output -any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Nov 29, 2013 3:48 PM in response to Linc Davis

Hi Linc,

As you suggested I went through the first step you outlined and received the below results in my TextEdit window.

Nov 27 09:40:58 lezas-mbp kernel[0] <Debug>: nspace-handler-unblock: did not find token 23398

Nov 27 21:31:56 lezas-mbp kernel[0] <Debug>: nspace-handler-unblock: did not find token 16968

Nov 27 23:39:51 lezas-mbp kernel[0] <Debug>: nspace-handler-unblock: did not find token 18948

Nov 29 07:00:29 lezas-mbp kernel[0] <Debug>: nspace-handler-unblock: did not find token 38601

I have been seeing slower boot times and even more noticibly is the length of time it takes for my menu bar at the top and applications in my dock to even display or become useable, since installing Mavericks. I've verified my permissions, cleared all the programs from startup, and have nothing on my desktop but there's been no improvement.

Not sure it matters, but I have a mid 2012 MBP - 2.3GHz quad-core i7 with 8GB RAM.

Any suggestions based on the above TextEdit information or should I move on to the next steps you've suggested?

Thanks for the help!!

The orignal poster had different issues and helping that user got all mixed up with other users who kept hijacking ( known as " thread jacking") this thread with their own issues and problems that it becomes an issue for experienced users to keep track who they are trying to help.

Please start a new thread for your own issues to be addressed.

This is easier for all of us and, also, for users that have helped or solved your issues, makes giving the proper credit points easier to give to the correct users here in an individual posting.

So, please!, PLEASE, start a new post/thread/discussion.

Thanks.

Thanks for posting such a thorough routine for addressing the spinning wheel. I have a mid 2011 Imac, and the activity monitor does not show any odd behavior. I ran your step one terminal command, and got the following:

Dec 4 09:12:39 Christines-iMac kernel[0] <Debug>: disk0s2: I/O error.

--- last message repeated 1022 times ---

Could you advise what I need to do from here? What is this telling me??

thanks so much!

This is very serious!

It could be that your disk is failing, back it up now.

Linc may reply, however this issue shouldn't be taken lightly, an I/O error means the disk had trouble reading data. 1022 times indicate the disk in in a very poor state.

Back it up then consider repairing in Disk Utility (via recovery mode), see what others have to say.

Frankly you should go and create a new topic after starting a backup so your critical issue can be handled on it's own, just add a link to it from here.
