How to setup Canon Selphy CP900 printer over WiFi in Mavericks?

Hi,

After upgrade to Mavericks I can't install my Canon Selphy CP900 printer.

I simply wanted to print over WiFi network.

How could I do that?

Thanks in advance!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

I have followed the instructions for editing the installer to the letter, but when I launch the modified pkg I get an error saying There was an error reading the package. JavaScriptError.

I have also tried downloading the one you kindly provided via your Dropbox, but with this one I get the message The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.). Couldn't open "SELPHY CP series Printer driver_6.2.0.1.pkg.

Any clues?

Although I haven't got to the bottom of the problem with why the edited installer package I tried to produce with FPE didn't work, I have now succeeded in downloading and installing the version that redogg made available. Stupidly I tried to download the dropbox file by right-clicking on the link, which didn't work because the URL was obviously not the URL of the file but the URL of the dropbox page where the file could be downloaded from. Once I had properly engaged my brain I was able to download the file and install the new driver. Then when I connected my CP900 and switched it on the OS automatically installed the printer in the normal way - no need to click the + sign in Printers & Scanners.

To everyone realizing that the Canon Selphy CP900 won't install through Canon's driver installer, Canon has stated that they consider the CP900 a "seasoned" product and that it will not be supported moving forward. There will be no new drivers for Mac OS 10.9 or Windows 8.1. FYI, the unit has been on the market for less than 18 months.

I find this incredibly disrespectful to the consumer. They might not think much of $100, but a $100 printer is a decent size purchase for myself and a lot of other people, especially for a 4x6 photo printer. Canon is notorious for dropping support for products, but even knowing this, I expected it to work on at least 2 versions of Mac OS and to be supported for at 24 months on the market.

Please let Canon know how you feel about this.

Are there any consummer protection laws regarding a reasonable amount of time to expect a product to be supported after it is introduced into the marketplace.

@ Douglas Parker1: This just can't be right - the CP900 is still listed as a current model, at least on the Canon UK website.I suspect that it is more likely to be the usual issue with Canon that they are ridiculously slow in updating their drivers when new versions of OS X come out.

As we know, the current drivers do work as long as you override the OS version check. So fixing the current problem could be a trivial amount of work for them. However I guess that they have a policy of not supporting their drivers on a new version of the OS until their compatibility has been fully qualified. This may be valid with Windows, but given the relatively small changes in the printing infrastructure between 10.8 and 10.9 this seems, to say the least, over-cautious.

Why not build a step into the standard installation process where the user is alerted to the fact that the drivers have not been qualified for the new version of the OS and give the user the option of proceeding at their risk?

I agree that just simply cannot be correct, but according to Canon the CP900 is considered a legacy product that will no longer be supported. I am posting the exact language of the email below. I am frankly stunned since it is a fairly new printer and since the driver works perfectly, just not the installer.

We are always encouraged to see that our "seasoned" products are still providing reliable service within the operating system for which they were originally designed.

Canon has decided not to provide Mac OSx 10.9 drivers for the CP900. While considering the desire to provide the best possible support for Canon's current products in a timely manner, Canon must make decisions on which products to support when new operating systems are introduced. These decisions are generally based on the age of the product and the number of product estimated to be still in use.

The ridiculous fact is that in Hong Kong, there are still many shops seriously marketing this model for youngsters and poeple like me wanting to simply print photos as easily as we used to be with bigger printers. I feel cheated is that the retailers don't know it's not supporting OSX10.9!!!

I swear I won't use Canon products any more as I have the same case with my expensive document scanner DR-2010C. Same, no updated driver from Canon. I'll also tell my friends better not to use it.

Thank you so much Redogg, this worked perfectly

(for me I downloaded the file, then deleted the Canon Printer and then added it back on my Mac)

You are so kind to have made this driver and then made it available to the rest of us, especially since the maker of the printer - Canon - acts like they could not be bothered, they really are horrible people, shame on them

I bought my Canon Selphy CP900 last week and received the package yesterday. During setup at home, I quickly found out that there is a problem with the available driver and OS 10.9. I finally ended up here with an easy and quick solution (@redogg: thank you very much!!!) for the problem: it works perfectly!

This weekend I will send a letter to Canon Inc. in my country to express my dissatisfaction with the situation of beeing "off seasoned" with that printer - which is currently sold in shops all around the world - so quickly!

redogg thank you very much for your help! I stayed up until 3H00 last night trying to solve this problem of drivers for MAVERICKS & CP900.

Got up this morning landed on your sollution and it worked like a charm.

Downloaded your drivers directly, in all, took 3 minutes.

All other sollution from other blogs prior did not function.

I appreciate your efforts and wish you the best.

Sincerly,

Thanks, redogg, for the updated driver file. It worked like a charm. I purchased the Selphy CP900 for my wife for Christmas. Neither of us noticed it wasn't compatible with Maverick. Since she had her heart set on this particular printer I decided to unpack it and install the software in advance so I could make sure it worked OK. I'm glad I did. It gave me time I would really prefer not to spent on Christmas day to find your work around. Thanks again.

Thanks so much Redogg. I've had my selphy less than six months and only just upgraded to Mavericks. Absolutely disgusted with Canon's attitude, and will be contacting them to tell them so. Your driver package worked perfectly and I am so grateful. Interestingly enough, on the specification page it says:

Macintosh USB connection: Mac OS X v10.6 – 10.7
Wi-Fi connection: Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later

which is obviously a complete lie. I will be pointing this out to them also.

Thanks again, you're a star.

PS - can we all contact you again when we upgrade to 10.10?! x

There is another thing besides this missing driver update to Mavericks. Canon doesn't provide a proper icc-profile for this little printer. I noticed that the greens are rather dark and saturated.

I looked into the matter and found one good profile from ken.estudio@gmail.com . For 7 Euros he sent me an excellent working "Canon CP/800/900_4x6v2.icc"profile. Put this profile in the Colorsync folder with all the other profiles. Photoshop and Lightroom can find it from this folder.

With this profile the greens are much better and colors are more neutral. Recommended! You can install the profile in the printersettings. In Lightroom you can use it also for softproofing. It works fine!
