@Eric Root: Tried the second link and some of the suggestions. No Luck. Any links relating to Mavericks?
Try a laser lens cleaner disk. If that doesn't do the trick, then it's time to call AppleCare or haul the machine into an Apple repair stattion.
I am also frustated with this problem. My mac is fairly new early 2011 and evrything was working few hours before I upgraded to maverick
same issue. optiarc working fine untill I installed mavericks.
Then, restore the previous installation's bootable backup/clone or TM backup. One should always have one or both in order to revert and resume productive things.
Thanks. It helped. Still the same awkward noise while reading/burning, but I see now my cds in Finder and can do anything I want with them. Thanks again!
@triviani Did you try what apple advised me to do?
Yes I did, thanks.
I would have it straight in to the local Apple Store to have it checked.

Ok, after cleaning the dvd player -using the tissue and credit card trick- I got it to read DVDs again, just in time.
itasarah,
Check out ifixit.com for an otptical drive to fit your machine.
Others,
Has anyone that had the intermittent DVD problem upgraded to 10.9.2? Did the problem appear to go away for you?
Thanks. This solved my problem. I did the suggested System Management restart and that got things working so I never got around to trying "closing display" trick. Thanks for the tip.
You're a "Genius!"
