For speaker issues, reset NVRAM

Resetting NVRAM / PRAM

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
  3. Turn on the computer.
  4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
  5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

still have audio out thru the headphone jack? Speakers only?

report back.

Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried.

1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article.

2. If your model has an audio-out (headphone) port, and a red light is coming from it, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.

If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.

3. Boot in safe mode. Don't log in; just reboot as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.

4. Reset the NVRAM.

5. Reset the SMC.

6. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.

7. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.

So...

This is absolutely ridiculous. It used to happen before Mavericks update every now and then, but would work itself out after one restart of the laptop. I haven't tried all the steps that Linc Davis mentions above yet, but I'm about to. Needless to say, this is ridiculous to have to go through this many steps in order to get the internal speakers (that were JUST working an hour ago) to work. After this past month at college and having so many issues with my macbook pro, I'm pretty confident in saying that when I graduate (and/or actually have money to spend), it will end up collecting dust as my Xcode device in a corner of my desk while I use a brand new PC.

Yup, same here for my brand new MacBook Air, and I've seen the problem occurring with a recent MacBook Pro, as well. Definitely seems like a software issue related to Mavericks, so I fully expect it to be resolved in a future update. Hoping....

A restart quite often fixes the problem for me. So thanksful that this beautiful machine restarts so quickly. I would never do that with my 2007 MacBook Pro, as I getting it back up to speed would just be too much wasted time.

Let's hope that Apple is working on fixing this issue, and that it comes as an update separately from a Mavericks update because they are now rumoured to be waiting until March to release 7.1.

That said, I haven't had this problem in the past few weeks, primarily because I have not been switching audio outputs. Previously, I would cycle between AirPlay speakers and headphones, and this is when the built-in speakers would fail to be recognized (usually after a wakeup). So given that, I believe this can be fixed witih a software or firmware update.
