iPad Air : taping on its glass is louder than before?

Hi

I've just bought an iPad Air and one thing I really don't like about it is the sound it produces when i'm taping on its glass.

The sound is 2-3x louder than the sound of my previous iPad 1 and iPad 3, and the pitch is higher. It almost sounds as if my iPad Air was hollow.

I'm wondering if that's normal or not.

If I put one finger on the glass and type on it with another finger, the vibration is transmitted in a very noticable way. It wasn't the case with the original iPad and the "new" iPad.

So what I'm wondering is if it's a normal thing for the iPad Air, or if the glass of mine is not very well mounted (which could explain the transmission thing, hence the louder sound).

It really feels like my Air's construction is of much lower quality than those of my previous iPad, and it seems more fragile, too.

Did anybody else noticed that?

Totally agree, my experience with the air glass (also shattered like yours) is night and day different from my experience with its ipad4 predecessor. Apple genius said, so you didn't have it in a case? Defeats the beauty and lightness of the air but I realize that's philosophical. My takeaway besides the dissapointment is that one needs Apple care for the air, and way more careful handling. Wish I could purchase back an (new) ipad4.

My thought before taking my new iPad Air out of the box for the first time was I gained a faster more efficient processor in a thinner lighter device. One of the pluses of owning the extremely thin iPad Air is you can take advantage of it's slim profile by placing it in a case that offers excellent protection (my case is rated safe for a 4 foot drop) feels comfortable in hand and the whole package is only marginally thicker and roughly the weight of an uncased, unprotected iPad 4.

Works the same way for me with phones.A new 5 series iPhone in a highly protective case is only about as thick and heavy as my old uncased, unprotected iPhone 3GS

Advanced technology that's well protected yet still thin and light works well for me.Out there beyond the front door of my home the devices I own might get dropped and banged around but never have had one damaged and never purchased any type of extended warranty.

Thanks mx7, for your thoughts, I'm in total agreement with you after my experience, I was lulled by also never having one damaged, the ipad4 was a rock. I wouldn't get another air now without either using a case or getting apple care. It was a calculated risk, I have a case on the iphone but thought that since the ipad was mostly indoors . . .

It's funny that I left the Genius Bar without a replacement, I walked into the store with my $299 fully expecting to replace, after all, if I broke a crystal vase, I wouldn't expect the manufacturer to replace it for free. However, I didn't like the genius making me feel 'lucky' that apple would let me buy a new air for only $299, after all, I was offered apple care, my fault for turning it down. I suppose that's true, they don't have to extend that offer, but it's just rubbing salt in the wound for someone with a two month old broken gadget.

So now I have time to rethink this, perhaps when apple retires the ipad2, they'll move the ipad4 into that price point, so I'd have a choice of an uncased 4 vs cased Air. Have been looking at different cases and film coverings for the Air, none jumps out at me as appealing, am starting to think it's more efficient to get apple care, especially since I see posts by people who have cracked their Airs when trying to insert them into or taking them out of cases.

Interesting. I"ve searched on the Google for "IPad air screen problems" exactly for this reason. The IPad Air 4g is my first Apple product bought EVER. I wasn't interested in Apple's products until recently. Before buying the IPad I had a difficult time choosing between Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition and IPad Air 4G. In the end I bought both of them.

Well... Today I've bought the IPad Air after 2 weeks of using the Samsung tablet. I was HUGELY disappointed by the quality of the IPad's screen. Totally. Samsung Note is a a total different product from all points of view. Excepting the plastic, the Samsung is a very robust and tough tablet compared to IPad Air, that feels very... delicate, despite the unibody aluminum case. I totally wasn't expect that. I'm from Romania and frtunatelly here if you buy something from an online store located in Romania you can return the product and receive your money back. You have a 10 days window to do that. No questions asked. After only 6 hours of use I'm feeling I will return the Air. I'm very dissapointed. I like the design. It's the best design on the market, but... Something it's missing from this product. If the IPad had a gorilla glass screen I would't want to return it.

I also have that hollow sound when tapping on the screen. It feels like plastic and I think it's plastic. I've seen this type of screen on really cheap tablets. I don't know what to say... :(

With great excitement and anticipation, I took possession of my new iPad Air after thinking about buying it for months. But in the process of setting it up and visiting a few web sites, I became painfully aware of this issue of the screen sounding and feeling like plastic. This is the fifth Apple product I have owned that involves interfacing with a glass screen, and I am used to a certain feel of quality that is definitely lacking here. I decided that, unlike other posters to this thread, I was not willing to "get used to it" and immediately returned it. I plan to replace it with an iPad from the previous generation.

This is totally normal. That sound you hear when tapping on it. Is the air gap between the LCD light and the glass. All of the iPad airs are like this. However, in the new iPad Air 2. They have optically bonded them together so you get a thinner iPad and you loose that sound. My aunt has the iPad Air and it sounds like taping on plastic. But I have the iPad Air 2 and it is solid. Hope this helps!
