iPad Air : taping on its glass is louder than before?

Hi

I've just bought an iPad Air and one thing I really don't like about it is the sound it produces when i'm taping on its glass.

The sound is 2-3x louder than the sound of my previous iPad 1 and iPad 3, and the pitch is higher. It almost sounds as if my iPad Air was hollow.

I'm wondering if that's normal or not.

If I put one finger on the glass and type on it with another finger, the vibration is transmitted in a very noticable way. It wasn't the case with the original iPad and the "new" iPad.

So what I'm wondering is if it's a normal thing for the iPad Air, or if the glass of mine is not very well mounted (which could explain the transmission thing, hence the louder sound).

It really feels like my Air's construction is of much lower quality than those of my previous iPad, and it seems more fragile, too.

Did anybody else noticed that?

Hey! I also noticed the slighty different sound and tapping rebound immediately, yet it doesn't bother me, I think it's just a question of getting used to it.

But the Air I got came with a faulty Touchscreen. After 1 week of sporadic news it became more and more apparend that the Touchscreen just stopped working spontanously, and it had nothing to do with the OS lagging etc. I work at an Apple Reseller, I have to say this did not feel like a one time error and just for interest I'll monitor it a bit if I come across that problem again.

My new iPad works just fine though.

Hello! I was just now researching this very issue. I thought maybe I received a defective device. I already have an iPad2 and noticed the sound immediately. I ordered mine online and received it this week. However, I have to say, I tried it out in the store but didn't notice the sound because it was so loud in the store the night I went. I love the retina display that I didn't have before. I am tired of looking at the lines in the display of my iPad2. To me the sound and feel is annoying. I am torn. Thinking of sending it back and waiting on iPad 6. I did order a tempered glass screen protector instead of the plastic film ones. I will try that out before I make my final decision.

This has caused me the most consternation. Althought that word is a tad strong. A brief history. I'm not an Apple guy. No iPhone, no Mac, no iPod. Nothing. Got an iPad 2, loved it - changed my life, disliked iOS. Sold it, got a Galaxy Tab, prefer Android. And while the plastic vs metal builds were not an issue - the Galaxy is sturdy for a plastic device - I, of course, love the Apple hardware.

After a couple years of enjoying Android, I used the pad less and less - and, in my primary work fields (digital film work and photography) there is a great void of Andoid apps.

Switched back to iPad4. Grew to accept what I hate and deal with what is wrong with iOS, and used the Galaxy for file management, but all work done on the iPad4.

Got the iPadAir. LOVE IT, but because of this screen thumping plasticky hollowness, it now feels cheaper and less sturdy than the Galaxy.

I'm firmly in the Apple camp now for tablets; I haven't seen any Android I would go back to. But I have this nagging feeling that the Air is not as sturdy and is not robust enough for daily work. I hope I'm wrong.iPad

TL;DR : iPad Air feels cheaper than plastic Samsung tablets. That makes me sad.

sun john take it back to where you bought and exchange it.I bought an iPad 4 sept 24th this year it's great. Wednesday the 27th I bought a 32 gig IPad air at the sprint store.I haven't had any of the problems that you and the other people are talking about .I'm thinking that maybe a bad shipment of devices got through. It's just my thought but if was me I would take back.

What a great shame that the iPad Air has a distinct plastic feel to it as far as the screen goes. All previous iPads have been a thing of beauty and lovely to handle. OK so the 3 & 4's were a little heavy but when tapping on the screen there was a nice feeling of quality. Now with the Air that feeling has now gone. I never felt the need to have a screen protector on the iPad's 1, 2 and 3 that I have owned. But it looks like one is going to be needed with the Air. I guess that is a penalty of being an early adopter.

If everyone on here is so dissatisfied with your ipad air take it back to where you bought or give apple a call to get it straighten out.Dont ***** about it and not do anything about.I have a forth generation 16 gig retina display and a 32 gigipad air I bought the 16 gig sept and the 32 gig air November 27th I dont have the problems with the air period. Like I said in an earlier post it might have been a bad shipment.

I have returned mine after owning it for just 24hrs. Other than the weight reduction and slicker new form, the whole device just felt like a completely inferior product to all other iPads. The glass feels cheap with annoying tappity tapping with anything but a light touch. The speakers vibrate the whole device so that when you hold it and play music or sound, it vibrates as it's so hollow. The device bends under slight pressure as its designed for the smaller mini and the extra size weakens the chassis, and the buttons feel cheap. This is not a £500 premium product. Don't buy into the marketing and fake reviews. Be warned.

I noticed the EXACT same thing as you did when I bought the iPad Mini last year and since the new iPad Air's design is based on the "Mini" I also notice these same things on my ipad Air as well. When I first got the ipad mini last year, at first I thought they had used plastic to make the screen. I even tapped my tooth against it to see if it was glass, LOL. While I really like the lightweight feel of the iPad Air, it does come across to me as cheap, especially when compared to previous generations of the iPad. All those glorious and positive reviews all over the web never mention any of this, all they do is rave how wonderful and improved the iPad Air is over the previous generations. I would have been much happier had they kept the design of the prior generation/s (2,3 and 4) and just made it lighter and faster. I'm wondering just how light all these manufacturers are going to go until all our phones and tablets feel like cheap toys rather than expensive high end electronic devices. There was a time when the rule of thumb was you could tell something was of quality by it's "weight" (ie; Sunglasses) and if something was lighter than air (pun intended) it indicated cheapness.....Seems apple wants us to forget that rule...........................

Is it your first iPad?

Look, it's not really a deal breaker issue, but it just sounds relatively hollow when tapping lightly compared to previous generations.

The glass is indeed thin, and when my 11 year old daughter stepped on it with bare feet the glass shattered completely. My other ipads have had kids and bikes run over them and never broke. Probably not scientific I know, but a good gauge of toughness nonetheless.

Yes it's my first iPad although I have been using portable devices since back in the Palm Pilot/Handspring days.Good point however,if I had hours and hours of experience with an earlier model I can definitely see where I'd be noticing a difference, perhaps feel uncomfortable and have concerns about quality.

I can't stand the 2014 Harley Davidson version of the 2008 I ride, because they made "improvements" that take away from the "feel" I know and appreciate from my old bike.

I definitely don't perceive any flexing of the screen at all.Everything's relative, for those interested in looking further there's you-tube video of a reviewer doing back to back hand held drop tests on concerte from a height of four feet with a new Mini and new iPad Air.While not scientific (impact may be inconsistent) the Air's screen looked to be pretty fragile especially compared to the Mini's smaller screen.

I have my Air in a Pelican case, good setup for me.
