Faxing with imac and comcast

I'm trying to fax using an imac runnning os x. I purchase a apple usb modem and attached it to a phone line. My phone service is through comcast and is digital.

When I try and send a fax I get the message "preparing to fax" and that is it. The process stall there. Is there any advice on how I could get this to work other than using a fax service like efax.

Thanks for the advice. I've checked with Comcast and they said that faxing be possible and recommended lowering my modem speed or listening to the modem to try and diagnose the problem.

I don't see a way to lower the modem speed and I can't get past the error message "preparing to fax" or "waiting for modem" to listen for the modem. Do these error messages mean that I'm not even getting to the point where my computer would try and connect through the phone line?

I'm now faxing! For any other users having trouble faxing, try shutting down the compter. I normally just let the computer go into sleep mode, but shut it down to test the effect on the modem. After, shutting down fax was sent without issue.
