iPad Air and Smart Covers

Hi All

Picked up and iPad Air and third-party case today (Tucano Hard Folio FILO iPad 5 Gen), the store I got them in hadn't yet got Apple Smart cases in stock. I'm having an issue in that the case won't unlock/lock the iPad when open/closed. Also the Lock/Unlock toggle is missing from Settings>General and doesn't appear even after several hard rests and restores via iTunes. I'm inclined to think its a software issue, specially with 7.0.3 and the new hardware but can't be certain without using an official case.

Has anyone had any issues like this with first- or third-party covers/cases?

Thanks in advance!

Like the previous iPad, I believe that the Smart Cover lock/unlock option only shows in the iPad's settings if it has detected a case that has an embedded magnet in the proper position. Does the case that you purchased have that required magnet (is it advertised as being compatible with the feature)?

To get the setting to show regardless if your case does/does not support the feature, I've heard that you can use an ordinary magnet and pass it in front of the side bezel (likely on the right-hand bezel) to trigger the magnet and the feature. Still if your case does not have the required magnet or support the feature, having the setting alone will do you no good.

The Apple Smart covers aren't fitting my iPad Air properly. They hang over the top of the iPad and leave the bottom of the iPad exposed. The Apple Store told me the magnet is probably misplaced and have ordered me a new one through the Genius Bar. But my third party case (made in China for iPad 5/iPad Air) works like a dream in locking and unlocking - every time!

I am having the very same problem. It is annoying and I even tried changing it by another Smart Cover and still doesn't work. Could it be an issue with the magnets not being aligned properly on the iPad Air?

Anyone close to an apple store to check?

I also tried setting up a case online but the service is yet to be available for the iPad air.

It's taken me four days but I've only just realised that the cover I bought, while magnetic, doesn't actually employ the iPad's internal magnets but latches to itself via the plastic iPad retainers that keep it in the case. I'll be returning it tomorrow and keeping it naked until they have Apple covers to sell that I can buy. The longer I keep it the more difficult it'll be to return it. I feel stupid-derp!

It is a problem with the iPads and not the Smart Covers.

I had the exact same issue with my Smart Cover being misaligned on the iPad Air.

I took them to the Apple Store and we tried multiple covers on my iPad and they all did not line up properly. All the covers did fit the iPads that Apple had on display. So they decided that it was an issue with the iPad.

They gave me a new iPad and my cover now fits it perfectly.

Looks like there is an issue here, as there are more people reporting the same issue.

i have received my roocase ipad air case from amazon today. all ports are open correctly and the best things is the sleep/wake function works perfectly fine. It will put the ipad air to sleep mode when the flap is close and the unit wakes right up when i open up the flap. currently using ios 7.0.3. i like this ipad air origami case which is cheaper and has more functions vs the original apple smart cover. it looks cooler IMO. currently on special on amazon

I'm on my 3rd iPad Air as the original had a poor display even though the Smart Cover fitted perfectly. On the replacement, I had this issue with the internal iPad Air magnets not aligning the Smart Cover correctly. The cover was 2mm higher at one end and left part of the screen exposed when fitted.

There does appear to be manufacturing quality control issues so I would urge buyers to check the screen quality and ask in store to check magnet alignment with a cover at purchase.

I'm sure Apple won't do an iPad Air recall or contact buyers saying that they may unknowingly have a faulty iPad if they didn't purchase a Smart Cover.

It could be years before some people discover this magnet misalignment issue with their iPad Air and it will certainly detract from its resale value if faulty.

Apple will quietly fix this manufacturing quality control issue. Ethically I believe they are obliged to do a press release and get it out in the open.

Over to you Apple.

Do the right thing.

I had the same issue with iPad Air: I brought it back to the store today, I showed the misalignment and they were surprised.

I mentioned that online other people had the same issue and showed this discussion thread, pointing that other stores just replaced the iPad. They asked me if I wanted to do the same, I said yes please and they swapped my iPad with a new one.

We verified that the new iPad would align correctly and then I left a very happy customer. I agree Apple products might not be cheap, but the service is top notch.

I bought this 3-party chinese case, and i'm having the same problem.

However, the seller claims the case works well with other iPad Airs, so offered to send me a new one.

I considered restoring the iPad, but tried like mad to use magnets to enable the option under Settings > General, because it was absent.

After some hours, the screen turned itself off while using the magnets, and the option appeared (no need for the restore then).

Tried using the case, didn't work.

I will try going to a store nearby to try different cases, but i'm almost sure those won't work either. Clueless on what to do (and i checked, my case has magnets, both on the right place).
