iPad Air and Smart Covers

Hi All

Picked up and iPad Air and third-party case today (Tucano Hard Folio FILO iPad 5 Gen), the store I got them in hadn't yet got Apple Smart cases in stock. I'm having an issue in that the case won't unlock/lock the iPad when open/closed. Also the Lock/Unlock toggle is missing from Settings>General and doesn't appear even after several hard rests and restores via iTunes. I'm inclined to think its a software issue, specially with 7.0.3 and the new hardware but can't be certain without using an official case.

Has anyone had any issues like this with first- or third-party covers/cases?

Thanks in advance!

Like the previous iPad, I believe that the Smart Cover lock/unlock option only shows in the iPad's settings if it has detected a case that has an embedded magnet in the proper position. Does the case that you purchased have that required magnet (is it advertised as being compatible with the feature)?

To get the setting to show regardless if your case does/does not support the feature, I've heard that you can use an ordinary magnet and pass it in front of the side bezel (likely on the right-hand bezel) to trigger the magnet and the feature. Still if your case does not have the required magnet or support the feature, having the setting alone will do you no good.

Hello,

I had same issue. I bought new Ipad air and also bought new 3rd party smart cover which did not work for me. It does not lock / unlock the ipad by closing ans opening of cover. I return that cover and went to Apple store and told them I had an issue. I told them I can not see Lock/unlock toggle in settings. The genius bar guy directly went to grab apple ipad cover without looking at my ipad air. He put apple ipad smart cover and showed me here you go it's working. Then I went to setting and what I saw is..............Lock/unlock option is right there. I asked him and he said you need to buy apply smart cover since they have changed the magnet setting which will activate this future. II am waiting for Ipad case which I bought from amazon ( 3rd party vendor). I will put that case as they claimed that it will work with air with sleep and awake option.

SO IF YOU HAVE PROBLEM THEN GO TO APPLE STORE and BUY THEIR SMART COVER> or you have to wait for 3rd party once they change their magnet location.

Hope this will help.

Did you have problem in snapping you ipad Smart Cover to its screen or top and bitten of the screen was not aligned. I ordered apple Smart Cover but still I have problem with it. I can see the ipad Smart Cover was little open from middle og the cover meaning that if you look ipad from speaker side your ipad has little bump made of Smart Cover.

Did you have this problem? Or alignment problem at top and bottom.

I bought my #iPad Air in Preston (Vic, Australia) thru #JB HiFi online in April 2014, delivered thru the store. When I picked up the iPad I had to ask for a #SmartCover - they didn't think of seling me one. However, after a few days I have noticed that the cover does not lie flat - It is bowed upwards by the groove nearest the magnets. a line of dust formed under this 'tent'. I took it back to the store this week and we tried other covers (including of different colours) and all had the same problem. From this thread I gather that the problem may be in the iPad, not the cover. can someone from #Apple please confirm or deny? I paid good money for the little cover ($50) and would like to have one that works!

I had the same problem. I bought an Apple smart cover recently, and it was not aligning. I'm pleased I found this forum, since it saved me from wasting time swapping covers. I went to the Boston Apple store, they tested a new cover (still would not align) and tested my cover on other iPad airs (aligned fine) and gave me a new iPad Air, which works great.

They also claim they have no notice that this is a common problem, but also said there was not code for it in their system, so they just logged it as a cover issue. It could be the case that Apple does not want to publize this, since only a minority will see that they have the issue if they buy a smart cover. It's also possible that their lack of a code for the issue is not allowing it to float to the top of their technical issue problems.

I have to believe that they are aware that itwas a problem with at least some of the Air's, or they would not have fixed it in later runs.

I own an iPad Air, and bought a Lifeproof Fre case for it. The case is great. I then added the Lifeproof cover when it became available. It does not trigger the sleep function as it is claimed to do.The auto lock on/off is present in settings and is set to on. Lifeproof has been kind enough to send me two more cases and one cover as they seem to think the problem is that the case somehow interferes with the magnetic fields. I took the whole works 40 miles to my nearest Apple store only to find that the iPad works fine with the smart cover. We tried just the cover from Lifeproof and it wouldn't make it sleep sans the case. As an aside, we have the same set up on my wifes iPad Mini and all works fine. Lifeproof also claims to have not run into this problem before. Swell.
