Hi, tammyluk.

Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.

Here are the steps on how to reject clips in iMovie.

Organize your events and projects

Delete movies, trailers, clips, and events

You can delete unwanted movies, trailers, and clips from an event, and you can delete an entire event in order to free up space on your hard disk.

  1. In the Libraries list, select the event you want to delete, or select the event that contains the item you want to delete.
  2. In the browser, select the movies, trailers, or clips you want to delete.Note: To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
  3. Choose File > Move to Trash. If a clip you’re deleting is in use anywhere else in your library, the clip is not deleted.

Note: Selecting a clip and pressing Delete marks it as rejected. For more information, see Mark clips as favorite or rejected.

Cheers,

That was unfortunately not helpful. The OP indicated that "after rejecting clips ... i see my rejected clips but i cannot delete them" (emphasis added).

I similarly have marked some portions of the clips in my events (but not in projects) as "rejected." I can change the view in my event to show only those rejected portions of the clip. If I attempt to delete them, however, the entire clip of which they are a part is moved to the trash.

Does anyone know how to delete the rejected portions of a clip in the event browser?

My workaround that you can still perform the delete of a rejected part of a clip in iMovie 11 v9.0.9 (because it is still in the applications folder). Then if you want to continue in iMovie v10.0.1 you can import the retained part of the clip and use it there. Why do Apple remove such obviously useful features? Wouldn't it be nice if they told us!

When you reject the clip does it show a red line at the top of the clip? I had a hard time removing clips that I had already deleated (for some reason they stayed in imovie).

If you do not require the original footage then rightclick on the clip and select "Locate in finder" move the original clip to the trash. Note: this is the original imported file and not nessesaryly the original copy of the video.

I deleted the rejected portions of some footage, mostly silent parts during interviews, but sadly the whole clip including the parts in the same clip file marked as favorite got deleted. Luckily I had the raw footage in a folder. It is mindboggling that iMovie can not split a file and let a user delete useless portions.

I overall like the speed and ease to use of iMovie but this is crazy.

I submitted a report. I am wondering if iMovie just works on the metadata, not on the file, so it is a problem of the architecture of the software rather than a missing option.

But it is really a pain. If I need to shoot some interviews I like to cut out the question and leave the reply. I have a lot of footage that I can trim and trash parts I have no use for to make the editing faster and save HD space.

I could use the old iMovie 11 (although I wonder if it modifies the quality of the original clip by converting it in a different format) but it is such a slower process and 2 steps instead of one.

IMovie 10 is great at showing the sound waveform so I can see with my eyes the parts where there is silence no sound during an interview, making the selection / rejection of those parts easy.

too bad I can not just get rid of them.

@stefan,

Did you consider to work with either rejected or favorite clips.

In my workflow I scan my footage, mark roughly want I want to use ( or absolutely don't want to use). Then I choose the option to show just my favorits or all exept rejected.

In that way I speed up my workflow when I start working on a project.

Doesn't solve the storage issue though. But for the time being it may be of interest for speeding up your workflow.

Furthermore the problem must be a simple software problem, as in the past the function worked and today you can indicate reject or favorite. You can also use parts of a clip so the indicators are there.

There are more "simple" bugs in iMovie. It's just a bit sloppy work.

@ Ben Blocks.

Thanks for the tip. I know that workaround. I made the mistake of deleting the rejected portions of the clips and deleting the whole files.

I am doing some interviews where I do not need to keep / save the questions. So I could delete half of the footage with no regrets nor future use.

It feels like a waste of storage to keep GBs of useless HD footage.

Skimming in Quicktime would be slower because I would not be able to visually see the silent parts or else.

I could use the old iMovie and then reimport into the new one, but that would defeat the speed advantage of the new iMovie.

Apart from this issue and the limited export to file size/compression options I like the new iMovie a lot.

I fully agree. Despite several bugs (I have even some extra ones in my "Dutch" version) I wouldn't go back either. I love the concept of this new iMovie.😎

If your familiar with Automator you may have an extra option for bitrate and annotate your Movies. However you need to export first. Didn't manage yet to add that function directly to iMovie.
