I just upgraded my AT&T DSL service to AT&T U-Verse. AT&T installed a Motorola NVG589. How do I get this modem/router to work with my Apple Airport Time Capsule? Thanks to this forum I had it working before with my Motorola 2210 modem.

I tried that, but then it said I would not be able to operate my guest network.
You will not be able to use the Guest Network feature on the Time Capsule, since the Motorola NVG589 is a modem/router.
Bridge Mode is the correct setting for the Time Capsule with your modem/router.....or gateway....as it is also known.
You need to have a pure, simple modem if you want to be able to set up the Guest Network correctly.
I spoke with Apple Support and they confirmed that I am currently operating in Double NAT mode. I want to keep my TC as the primary router, not a second, chained router. So, it looks like I need to put the Motorola NVG589 in bridge mode. Can someone help me through that? When I called AT&T and told them I just wanted their device to work as a modem and let me use my TC as the router, I got sent to AT&T Connect Tech where they offered to charge me $180 for a year of support ($15/month with a 12 month commitment) or $49 for 5 days of service. That didn't engender a lot of goodwill or confidence on my part. This community has solved my challenges before, so I'm hoping you can help me again. Thanks, in advance.
I do not recommend that you run the Time Capsule with the Double NAT error on the network, since it can create some unpredictable results.
Among these are.....slower Internet browsing, inability to reach certain websites, incompatibility with online gaming consoles, and the list goes on.
On the other hand, some users can get away with a Double NAT error on the network.
Up to you to decide if you want to run the network this way and watch for unusual things for the next few days.

It advises to write down the WAN-side MAC Address of your personal router (i.e., my TC). Please help me on this point. My AirPort Utility shows an IP Address 192.168.1.66 and shows a LAN IP Address 10.0.1.1. Is the WAN-side MAC Address one of these? Which one?
For convenience sake, I'll copy the steps provided in the link above. Please let me know your thoughts about this approach.
How do I setup bridge mode in the Motorola NVG589?
First, make srue you have a notebook or a computer that you can directly connect to the NVG589. Once you have that, unplug all Ethernet cables (including television STBs) from the NVG589 except for the aforementioned notebook/computer.
Second, write down the WAN-side MAC Address of your personal router.
Now, for the steps to do inside the NVG589's configuration.
Note: 192.168.10.1-254 address block is a suggestion in this series of steps. Change as your wish.
1. Log into the NVG589's web-based configuration interface in your web browser.
2. Go to "Home Network" -> "Subnets & DHCP". It may ask for your NVG589's password.
3. If your "Device IPv4 Address" is in the same subnet as your personal router, change it to something else like 192.168.10.254. The subnet mask stays the same, 255.255.255.0.
4. Change the "DHCPv4 Start Address" to 192.168.10.1.
5. Change the "DHCPv4 End Address" to 192.168.10.10. We need a few NVG589 LAN side IP addresses for an WAP extenders for Wireless STBs and the Television STBs. The television STBs can't be connected to your personal router. It is important that you have only your computer that's configuring the NVG589 connected to it at this time.
6. Click "Save" at the bottom.
7. Go to "Home Network" -> "Wireless".
8. Disable Wireless by choosing "Off" in the "Wireless Operation" option.
9. Go to "Firewall" -> "Packet Filter". Click on the "Disable Packet Filters" button.
10. Go to "Firewall" -> "NAT/Gaming" and disable any and all settings.
11. Go to "Firewall" -> "IP Passthrough". Select "Passthrough" in the "Allocation Mode" option.
12. Type in 192.168.10.1 for the "Default Server Internal Address".
13. In the "Passthrough Mode" selection choose "DHCPS-Fixed".
14. Type in the WAN-side MAC Address for your router under "Manual Entry", lowercase is fine.
15. Click "Save" at the bottom. It will tell you that it needs to reboot, don't do this yet.
16. Go to "Firewall Advanced" at the top and turn everything off.
17. Near the top of your screen, you should see an option telling you to reboot the router. Go ahead and do this now. It takes about 2 minutes.
Now for your settings for your personal router.
1. Unplug your laptop and plug in your personal router while the NVG589 reboots.
2. Plug your laptop into your personal router and login to it.
3. Log into your personal router and change the Internet connection type to DHCP as per your router's instructions.
You should be done configuring bridge mode now.
Before you dive in.....might be a good idea to find out if ATT will support this.

did you get an answer anywhere or solve your issue? we just put in uverse and have basically the identical issue
our house is a lot like this setup. we have an old house with thick walls and lots of dead spots. we had a TC with an extreme and three expresses to get wifi everywhere including a third floor office, bedrooms, etc. had an old time warner modem. switched to uverse, and had same problems described here and in other similar posts. do we have to set all the apple devices to bridge mode to get them to boost the signal on the motorola router?
also, the att guys say their router has more powerful wifi signal then the TC. we have the 3T TC that came out last year. don't know enough to know if that's true or BS. att guys claim ignorance on how to set up their router with apple devices.
I've been dealing with this same situation the last four days now. I have a Time Capsule attached to Two Airport Expresses via ethernet and Three Wireless Airports. Put the router into Bridge Mode/IP Passthrough like the DSLReports above article suggested and can't get it to work either. It works for a few minutes then craps out. Doesn't matter if I use static addresses on the lot either. I've tried multiple dhcp configurations as well, such as only using 5 addresses, 2 addreses, one address. I'd love to hear someone elses suggestions on how to try to get it to work. I've spent 48 hours on this so far the last few days and I have setup quite a few complex routers in multiple configurations at a previous job. But this one has me stumped. I looked through the logs and didn't see any glaring errors. I thought I had it figured out and then I started having connectivity errors on my Sonos speakers around the house. Tried a few different configs after that but each one had problems with various devices in my house. It seems like the router plays nice with the Airport for 10 minutes or so then torpedos the network. I never had these issues on the similar 3801 that I had previously for the last two years. If I could survive with the wireless from the router in my house I'd gladly do it. But I have three levels and a detached garage with 60 or so wireless devices so i need the wireless to work everywhere. They upgraded the coax in my house to Cat5E or I'd switch back to my old setup. Very disappointing AT&T!!!!! I am open to trying out any setup anyone has to suggest. I might have already tried it though. I will compile a list of all the configurations that I can remember that I have tried I tried a lot of them.
I have been dealing with very similar issues to everyone else on this thread. My solution is as follows:
1. Put the ATT Router into passthrough mode - I am not technical by any means. However, the ATT Connect Tech is well worth the money $15 per month and they can do it for you. Be prepared for an argument though - they will fight it all the way. Please note that I do not have Uverse telephone service - some have said that this is a problem.
2. Reset the time capsule, airport extreme or airport express. Do not just turn it off - hit the little reset button with a paperclip. Also rename your wireless network - basically start fresh. Make sure the TC is connected directly to one of the yellow ports on the ATT Router (mine is the NVG899). You will create a network - get on the phone with Apple - they can walk you through this.
3. The connect airport extremes or expresses - use the same procedure - reset etc. Program them to "extend a network".
4. System should be up and running.
5. As to Sonos - I unplugged all of them - I have some hardwired so the network is picked up that way - plug them all back in and then they appeared for me.
It is a real pain - but I persisted for a good number of hours yesterday with both Apple and ATT to make this work and the network running smoothly. I hope this helps others who have been dealing with similar issues.

I'v been dealing with the very same issue now for going on over a year. I was told by AT&T, before I even signed on with them, that I would be able to "Bridge" their Gateway so that it would not interfere, or cause the dreaded Double NAT (which it did, accompanied by many issues) with my Time Capsule. AT&T is not as one on this issue. Some say yes and other say no, or, have no idea.
An AT&T Technician was out here for over 2 hours today; he left defeated. He was unable to successfully "bridge" my NVG589 Gateway (he followed the above directions, even at one point I along with him, more than once). An AT&T Technician, 6 or so months back (I should have written down step-by-step instructions), had successfully accomplished what the other could not (so I know it can be done). I phoned AT&T directly afterwards only to be told that the NVG589 cannot be "bridged", and that I would need a "2wire 2701 or 2700" instead, which could be, by way of an IP or DMZ passthrough. Is this setup Internet "safe", or just the pros and cons of it? An AT&T Service Technician will arrive this coming Wednesday to configure my new setup. Is this not so complicated?
I phoned Apple, and they like me, thought this was getting very much involved. The Advisor asked if I mentioned having the router function just turned off. I did!, I told him. AT&T said that was not possible. To place the Time Capsule in Bridge mode would disable my wireless Time Machine Backups (don't want that), so I have to Bridge the Gateway.
The Double NAT is causing me beaucoup problems, mainly - with my plug-n-play LG UltraWide (ooh-la-la), not to mention a wireless VOIP fax setup, internet connections, a (in the past) wireless setup box connection, and so on and so forth. Double NAT has to go! I'm hoping this new solution will be the much needed remedy that will cure my many technical-woes. You seem rather bright, any thoughts? I have U-Verse Internet and nothing more.
