Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?

Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?

iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

I'm afraid you're not wrong Joe. It's been a while now I am convinced that all iPad Airs are affected to some different extent. Some units awfully yellow, some less so people barely notice, some with strong book spine

some with less. And very rarely a really good even screen.

I'm now sitting with my fifth Air, worst than all I had before, and still awaiting a replacement or a refund.

As I already said, I am also convinced that these flaws wont be fixed, wont be taken into account by Apple.

Some units produced last week feature the same faults as those produced in october 2013. Apple knows about the problem since early november, and they did nothing obviously.

iPad Air will remain as is, untill next gen. Same issues with iPhone 5S, not fixed either.

My fear is also that Apple *might* have entered an new era, where market share has become more important than the quality of products. because, to produce on surch a large scale the Air with a low quality display -knowing the importance of the Air for Apple on the market this year- is really something frightening.

Should not have happened.

Happy New Year though !

I'm gonna go ahead and tell you right now they have entered a new era. If the 5C is anything to go by.

I guarantee you Apple saves WAY more money with these low grade screens than if they went and mass produced high quality "perfect" devices across the board like they used to. Their heads probably spun off their shoulders when they saw the dollars signs they were saving. Quite sad actually seeing how companies don't just change their minds on money, meaning this new Apple is here to stay.

I've been buying every iOS product since the iPhone 3G. I have absolutely no interest now in whatever Apple comes out with next. Like I said, they've completely lost me as a customer.

Agree FuelFlow. The thing is that this is maybe due to how has been designed the backlight setting and then assembled. If there is less leds than before in order to save space this can cause less brightness in some areas of the screen and give this warmer color or hue "yellow" tint sometimes.

It means that whatever batches we will get the issues as long as Apple will not design differently the backlight of the iPad Air. But again this is only my thoughts & suppositions & guessing 🙂

I must have went through ten myself. I had a few from Target, BB and Walmart. I give up. This is rediculous. Dead pixels, LED shining over screen, bright green pixels, pink/green/yellow/blue screens. What in the world is going on (rhetorical question incase you have a smart comment ;-) )? I purchased a mac mini so I could sync it with an ipad. However, I think I'll return that as well since I cannot get an ipad with a clear screen. MS isn't have discoloration and lighting issues with their Surface line. I may lean that way.For now, forget you Apple. Perhaps another day.

I just picked one up (32GB WiFi-Only, Space Grey) a couple days ago from my local Apple Store and for whatever reason it was a week 42 made at FC. My guess is everyone wants silver/white in my area or probably skips over the 32GB model. This puts its birth about a full week or so before the annoucement of the device.

The screen has no visible color issues (tinting or grey) and is bright. The only issue is does have is the shadow, but it's on the absolute extreme left edge of the screen only. The only time I even notice it is when reading the WSJ, because the text runs super close to the edge... it creates the illusion as if a subtle book binding was there on the screen edge.

I think I'm just gonna roll with it unless I find other apps where it becomes noticeable. I'd rather have a subtle shadow I can only see in limited situations versus color problems. I also like how it's not floating an inch or so in like other have reported. Color issues would drive me bananas! Good luck everyone and have a happy new year.

Joe , I did not get my replacements from Genius but from AppleCare dpt in the Netherlands. Which, I believe, is quite the same thing. Since they replace with new units, I too at once thought they QC for units aimed for replacement would be doublechecked prior shipment. But they proved me wrong, the three units I received were all defective. The last one being the worst. Am now awaiting to see what happens with one helpful supervisor in charge with my file.

AgentBoston, I made a similar experience today, but it was a wifi only 16gb air that came in white, production week 42. I am checking devices at shops from time to time and this was by far the best I've seen so far. My first device was a 64gb cellular spacegrey version which I returned after 3 days as I couldn't stand that yellow tint in the lower left corner.

I would think very noticeable yellow is a flaw.

In my case I am trying to decide if I plan to return my iPad Air or iPad Mini (testing both).

My iPad Air does NOT have the blatant yellow left-side-of-screen issue. However, it does have a slight shadow of about 3mm on the left edge. I am not sure if that is full book-spine issue or not. Also, the right side of the screen IS more white then the left side. It is VERY minimal but I can see it on white screens.

My iPad Mini, compared to the iPad Air or my iPhone 5 has a VERY warm screen. It is VERY noticable in book apps with Sepia color. Instead of tan it looks pink. If set my Mini next to the air the ENTIRE iPad Mini screen looks more yellow/warm.

I am torn. If I KNEW I could get a good iPad Air screen (consistent screen color.. even if slightly warm) I would likely stick with the Air. However, this thread tells me that is a roll of the dice. Also, if I could get the iPad Mini with a nice consistent white screen that could be the way to go. I think I am going to return both of them today and go with my gut.. and see what happens.

Just out of curioisity, those who have units without pereceivable bookspine, what are the first four letters of your serial number? All of mine, both gray and silver, have been DMQL and have all had signficant display defects, all of which included the bookspine (shadow on the left edge) effect to some degree. I really like this tablet compared to my old 3, but these defects are really distracting during my normal use.

Jan 5, 2014 9:19 AM in response to Infinite Jest

Since the beginning if the Air drama, I haven't hear of any serial without the book spine effect. That MUST be directly linked with the IGZO displays implanted on the Air (less LEDs used to achieve back lighting) .

Personally I could live with a slight book spine effect , the worst defect being the uneven whites and yellow tint.

About Apple, I've long given up the hope that they would admit the glitch. They won't. They will simply release new iPads in 2014. Not sure at all that they'll have sorted the issues in the meanwhile though.
