Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?
Hi, I have just got a new ipad air today. I am noticing that the left side of the screen has a yellow tint. Should I take it back for a replacement?
iPad, iOS 7.0.3, Ipad Air

Got new air wifi 128. The screen is PERRRRFECT! No yellow stains and, believe or not, ABSOLUTELY no bookspine. Throw all the garbage back to Apple, they have the good ones on the shelf! Good luck to all! ;)
Congrats! I hope more people can find iPads with uniform screens. What are the first five letters or numbers of the serial for this iPad? I returned my last air a month ago after making 3 exchanges. Don't want to keep gambling and I haven't found a DMPLX at the store yet :(
Congratulations to Andytos!
For anyone interested, I read somewhere about using a hair dry to reduce the yellowing. Sounds crazy, but I thought I'd give it a go with my latest Mini Retina. I had the hair dryer on the warm setting for about two minutes (the mini got fairly hot, but not too hot to touch). It absolutely, without a doubt, made the yellow go away. The yellow returned after a few minutes, however.
I have no idea why heat makes the yellow go away, but I have to wonder if prolonged exposure will make it go away permanently (this Mini Retina does seem better than when I first got it). I am a bit concerned about making the Mini too hot with the hair dryer, but this is very intriguing.
Anyone else feel bold enough to try it?
I am 75 years old and on a fixed income. I have been following this discussion for several months. I have an iPad 2.
I finally bought an iPad air this week. I am one of the lucky ones because my screen seems perfect. I compared it with my ipad2 and the iPad air screen is much whiter than the ipad2. I can't see any yellow on the screen. The serial number is DMPLQ8TF4YG.
I'm really picky when it comes to screens. Almost all Airs on display in stores are unacceptable (mainly they have book spine on the left clearly visible after a minute of starring). Minis are much better though. But definitely they have perfect screens as they advertised and you die before notice any crap. Good luck!
I returned my horrible yellow iPad Air with a DMPM Serialnumber. Unfortunately Apple only had 1 DMPL and DMPM serials there. They opened three more and everyone the opened was horrible yellow aswell, so I ended up getting a refund. The ones in the Showcase all had this beautiful looking, bright white display and the iPads they actually sell were yellow... I'm really disappointed in Apple since I already sold my iPad 3 and need/want an iPad badly, but these displays are just horrible.
Here you can see a picture of it:

It's post number 1794.
Your photo definitely shows the one iPad Air screen is more yellow than the other, but what most of us are complaining about is that the iPad Air (and Mini Retina) screens are partially yellow on only one side. Most of us would be happy to receive a somewhat yellow screen if the whole screen was yellow! :) In fact, there is anecdotal evidence to suggest that an *entirely* yellow screen may become less yellow over time.
I decided to go back to the Air and I just received it - DLXM4 (week 4, 2014). The left side is noticeably yellow and there is a very small amount of bookspine effect. I might give it a few days but I expect I'll return it.
I've been having to use the Nexus 7.2 since mid-Jan (since selling my iPad 3) and Android is turning out to be frustrating and annoying. I'm really itching for an iPad...
@j182
I'm aware of that and trust me, all the screens I saw were more yellow on the left side (except the ones displayed in the store!). It's just that some were also yellow on the right side (but then even more yellow on the left side) and some were white on the right and yellow on the left (most of the time it was not just a yellow line but yellow to the middle of the screen and then it was more white). It was difficult to capture that in a picture in the store with the Apple guys watching. 🙂 The ones I tested were also week 4, 2014 but DMPM4. Also the screens of the store demos seemed to have much more vivid colors...
I already talked to my father since he has an iPad 3 which he never uses (he says it's the most stupid device he ever bought 🙂), so I guess I will stay with that one. Not sure if I'm gonna buy an Apple product again... (I only use Apple products since several years)
For those who are happy with your screens (particularly those with DMPLX), would you be willing to post a photo of your Air? Perhaps one photo of this webpage in portrait and the home button on bottom and another photo with the home button on top? I know it's very difficult to get a screenshot and it may demonstrate nothing, but I think it might be useful.
I'm trying to decide if I should just keep this latest Air and deal with the yellow because I may never find a better one (having to use Android has lessened my standards!). If I knew for sure that there were better screens out there I might be willing to keep trying...
If that picture is an accurate representation I would definitely return it. I guess I was lucky to get a good one on the 4th try, but when I see so many Airs and rMinis in the Apple store and Best Buy that appear to be "perfect" and read reports from others that their device is perfect, I believe they are out there. When they are good they are great and I think it's worth the effort to try again even though the return/exchange process is uncomfortable, time consuming and frustrating. You deserve to get a device with a screen you are happy with and not have to settle for one with color shift. Good luck!
Well ... the Air was returned to an Apple Store. The employee insisted on a replacement and I received a DMPLT (week 49). It has the best iPad Air screen I've seen! It does have a bookspine which is annoying, but the colour and brightness are nearly uniform. Since I almost kept an Air which wasn't even close to as good as this, and since I think this is my 12th Air since Nov 1st, I'd be a complete idiot not to keep this one :)
I bought iPad Air 32GB Black two days ago. It has DMPL Serial and apart from slight bleed in dark room near lower left edge, the screen is near perfect.
I compared my old iPad 3 with it side by side and was surprized that I was using a much worse screen, However since I didn't have any reference I never noticed those minor flaws.
To my understanding, when your device is new, you tend to pick smallest of the flaws (excluding tinting) and exagerate them. Here in my country there is no concept of returning a product and getting a refund or replacement on Apple products, so mostly its pure luck to get a perfect device.
Also there will always be IPS glow and very slight shift of uniformity when tilting the device. As compared to AMOLED, IPS does have full backlight 'On', even on black background. How bad it is, that's subjective, some people never notice it and some can't sleep if it's there.
Glad you're happy with your screen NajamQ! Especially if you have no return option. What's the next number in your serial?
For your info, those of us who have had issues finding a decent screen are not experiencing screen tilting anomalies or typical LCD non-uniformity. The Airs and Mini Retinas have worse than average uniformity issues. My photo above isn't even of my worst Air, but perhaps that photo is typical of your experience?
Obviously most people don't notice LCD uniformity issues. The brain is a marvelous thing in how it interprets what we see. I didn't see the yellow gradient until a week after getting my first Air, but after seeing it there was no unseeing it. I am able to happily ignore a degree of non-uniformity but these Airs/Mini Retinas really crossed the threshold.
I thought people here might be interested in seeing a thread about the Nexus 7 2013 having a yellowish bottom 1/3rd of the screen. I have one which has the same issue (granted it's not as bad as many Airs and Mini Retinas I've seen). The original poster on this thread ended up getting a different 10" tablet, but it had the same issue.
So, thank you again Apple for your generous return and replacement policies! It enabled me (and others) to finally find an Air with a (mostly) decent screen 🙂
