Ipad Air yellow screen tint on left hand side?

I bought my iPad Air Wi-Fi version (DLXLR) here in Manila, Philippines last December 19, 2013. The screen was perfect white ever since. This is my first iPad but I have an iPhone 5 bought on December 31, 2012 which did not have any screen issues (only poor battery life).

It's only now that I noticed that there is a yellow screen tint issue with my iPad at its left side. If I return this to the Apple Store here in Manila, will the Genius Bar replace my iPad with a brand new one? It's just that I wanna have this replaced but not with a refurbished one.

iPad has been the best tablet up to now but its screen issue really annoys users who spent too much for the "best tablet". 😟

Mini Retina experiences:

This week I ordered online and received a DLXLL (week 43 2013) which had the bottom 1/3rd yellow hue. The yellow wasn't terrible (a tad worse than my Nexus 7.2) but I returned it. The second one I bought at an Apple Store and it is a DLXM4 (week 4 2014). It's about the same as the DLXLL, maybe even a tiny bit stronger yellow hue. I'll probably return this one too.

On a side note, the iPad Mini is very nice otherwise, and it feels more solid than the Air for some reason.

Received a F4KLW (week 51, 2013) Mini Retina after returning the last one and it is pretty much exactly the same. The Apple Store employee who did the replacement saw the yellow gradient immediately (I didn't even point it out), which was very nice. The F4KLW has been returned. Thank you Apple for your easy return policy - it allows those of us to whom these things matter to continue to try and get one of your otherwise great iPads!

Totally agree!!!! I just got my replaced iPad Air 32G, and the screen looks pretty much "perfect", but, there is a DUST inside the screen!! Unbelievable, isn't the manufacturing process supposed be dust-free??? And I took almost a month on replacing my iPad, so frustrating.

Been there too - had a great one and yup, dead pixel. The one I have now is just OK - not great - book spine and slight yellowing but one of the least horrible I have seen - apart from the one with the dead pixel.

I have voted with my feet on the rMini after multiple attempts to get one with a decent screen I have gone with a Nexus 7 2013 (£299 for 32GB 3G versus £499 for the rMini) for my portable device which has a perfect white even screen. I will think twice before buying any iPad again - and I have had every model since they were introduced.

And I have an iPhone 5s (£629) with a yellow strip at the top of the screen and a Moto G (£160) with a perfect screen. I wonder if we are being taken for a ride by Apple.........

Dlanod, I definitely agree with your sentiment but my study into all of this suggests that the technology/manufacturing isn't there to reliably produce uniform edge-lit screens, and it might be that the specific design of the Airs and Mini Retinas (I've seen plenty of non-uniform Mini 1's as well) makes it even more difficult to achieve uniformity.

You can easily find many other people reporting these same issues with previous generation iDevices. Also, I too have a Nexus 7 2013, and it has the same issue—I would never accept it on a Mini Retina considering it costs twice as much. I recently noticed (after 4 years) my Sony TV has a weird light "bloom" around the edges. My former iPad 3 had a dark spot in one corner which I only noticed after 1.5 years. Etc.

I know the Airs seem worse than average, but I'm fairly confident that it's not due to negligence on Apple's part.

Are we still having QC issues with the iPad series? This is embarrassing.

It's because it's smaller. So you gonna feel less hollowness. It's physics and nature.

I said this before but the president of Apple should have spent billions on redsigning the iPad with high quality materials and have them assembled in Japan with high levels of QC. The price of the iPad Air 16GB standard should then cost $3000. I don't mind paying that much money as long as you get the quality, flawless screen and reliability. Apple has turned money hungry ********. They are targetting everyone so that everyone can buy their products. Well guess what, the quality will go down. Apple needs to go back where they started. Their mind needs to be "refreshed" or "reset". Like a reset switch in the computer.

It's sad to see people keep playing the same circle by returning their iPads for another one and another and another... you are running the circle. WAKE UP ALREADY! Just return it for a refund and don't buy anymore.

Another problem is that Apple, as well as many other manufacturers, is still relying on LCD technology for screens. LCD tech has to go, I mean seriously. This is year 2014 for God sake. AMOLED and plasma is superior in this regard, no uniformitty issues, even whites / blacks, and superior viewing angle and speed. What Apple needs to do is to meet with Samsung at the press conference. Get on their knees and ask for forgiveness for what bad things they have done to Samsung. And ask Samsung to use their screen technology to build their high quality properly functioning displays for the iPads and laptop screens. Pay em big bucks... it's gonna get expensive. Or invest billions on how to fit plasma technology to the iPad displays. It's gonna get thicker, and more power consuming, but you will get the fault-less screen quality. You want flat whites and blacks and superior viewing angles and speed? plasma is the way to go. It's so freakin stupid the companies are still relying on "LCD" crap junk. This has got to stop....

I ran into this mess when I had an iPad 2 and MBP a few years ago. I spent so much $$$ on these junk. The video playback on screen was slow because the response time is slow on LCD screens. I had light blotches too on the display. I wanted to get out of this mess so I sold ALL of my Apple stuff. Took the money and spent on high-end audio system. I am happy as **** now. Sound heaven. Do it like I did, guys, girls. It will be rewardinig.

My best guess is that a better "light guide" technology/usage is what's needed to fix these issues. I don't think LCD technology itself has anything to do with non-uniformity, nor do I think Samsung has the cure - I've read forums where people are complaining about the exact same issues with Samsung devices. I read a press release regarding improvements in light guides from 3M (I think), but who knows what effect that will have on iPads in the near future.

Plasmas are not the next big thing... Plasma and LCD technologies competed in television when HD first started becoming mainstream and LCD won out. It's thinner, lighter, more durable, and most importantly, no burn in. Can you imagine the burn in that a plasma screen would have on a tablet or phone? It would be horrendous. The status bar would be forever present when you watched movies. OLED is promising, but it isn't as power efficient. On black screens, it doesn't consume much power but on white screens it consumes like 20% more power, and ios7 is very brightly themed. Besides, I will never own an OLED screen until they start using proper RGB subpixel arrangement, not the stupid RGBG that combines a sub pixel between pixels. It produces that stupid screen door mesh effect on all of the samsung devices you see today. Besides, I don't think they've gotten OLED pixel density up to the level of apples retina screens, but I could be wrong about that. They definitely haven't with proper sub pixels.

Plasmas are still the next big thing even though its technology started in the ancient time. It was a success. That's why they are still making plasma TV's. There are reasons why this is continuing. First, it has consistent black and whites across the screen. There are no book spines nor any kind of light leakages that Apple's LCD devices have. Second, viewing angle is still superior, compared to most of LCD displays. Retina may come close, but still get spanked in this regard. More importantly, it's speed. Fast as ****. No stuttering no blurriness in the fast motion. It's authentic, vibrant, crisp, without any delays. Plasmas don't suffer from "accumulating" dead / failing pixels over time. What you get from the beginning is what you get till the entire display dies on you either from power supply failure or damage from lightning. The only disadvantage is the larger power consumption and heavier weight. Image burn-in isn't a problem at all. I have owned plasma TV for nearly 10 years. If you leave a deep image burn-in parts of screen they all eventually go away after a few months or so of use. You can adjust the iPad's main menu screen to lower brightness or change the background. Once they perfect the plasma technology and apply on portable devices it will be the winner. Same for the SuperAMOLED or the like, or any improved version of that technology.

LCD is the ancient tech device that should have been ditched a decade ago. LCD is the one that has uneven white issues and tints. Pixels fail after some use of the device. It collects more dead pixels the longer you use them. It's famous for dirty uneven whites. I face this problem all the time on computer displays at work and home when I had them.

My dream is to get my hands on a plasma screen laptop and mobile devices some day. That will be like similar to alien technology. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate Apple. I'm gonna get a iPod Nano when I get some money. I'm totally broke right now as I spent all on power cables.

Next Mini Retina - DLXM3 (week 3, 2014). It has yellowing on the bottom 1/2. I plan to return it. If I hadn't seen a really nice Mini Retina at an Apple Store (DLXLV) and another acceptable one (DLXLL) I'd probably give up hope since I wouldn't believe good ones existed :)

Ya know... what did I tell ya guys. LCD's have uniformitty issues as usual. Look, I love my 9 year old Panasonic plasma TV. It runs like a tank. Beautiful crisp pictures. Fast as heck. It's a 50" screen and heavy as heck (95 lbs). But because it's a professional / commerical model it's got a handle on both ends of the display so two people can carry around with them, anywhere, to another building across the street, indoor outdoor, take it to the grocery store, restrooms, coffee shop, etc etc. You can take it anywhere and plug the power cord and it's on. The 50 inch screen is big enough to enjoy. I love it.
