With new iOS 7, video streaming takes up phone's capacity

I noticed that with the new iOS, your videos (movies, television shows, music videos) are readily available to stream in the Videos app. But whenever you stream the video, it actually takes up storage in your iPhone. Everytime a video is being watched, your available storage capacity in your phone keeps on getting decreased quite significantly. And there's no way to delete the storage it's taking up, I think whenever a video is being streamed, the streaming file is being kept under the "Others" category because when you plug your phone ito iTunes, the "Others" section shows a huge amount of storage being taken up. Has anybody seen the same thing? And if so, is there a fix to this problem? Because my storage capacity is diminishing everytime I stream a video and the whole point of streaming a video is to NOT have it take up space in my phone's hard drive memory but unfortunately, it is taking up space in my phone's memory. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated or maybe Apple is coming up with a solution hopefully.

Just installed the update. So far haven't seen much difference. But there's one difference I guess, which is the quota assigned each time I click a chapter of the movie to stream ( same movie) is bigger, compared to the ones before the update. Which means, if the cache is not cleaned by os the situation gets worse. But still not sure if the cache will be cleaned after a while since I've just updated and tried the stream for a short while. Will post if there's anything new.

Update: tried reboot but no use, in my case. However did find a temporary *solution* instead of restore. Use iExplorer to delete the cache files inside media/CloudAssets and then reboot. After that it got my lost capacity reclaimed. Not sure about the risk of this process. Haven't got much besides that. Will report if I find anything new.

My iPad Air 16 GB arrived last night. I only got this size for a very specific reason, anytime when I am watching movies or TV Shows, I stream them on my High Speed Internet. In the past they have taken seconds to load and I never noticed a problem.

My other iPad had 64 GB and now I am kicking myself for not getting the 32GB... but really if this streaming issue is taken care of taking care of emails, using a few apps, playing a few games, etc ... should not be a problem at all with 16 GB. I keep the photostream on etc... so I can show family members recent photos and that is basically it.

Anyway after all that babbling... 7.04 does not resolve the issue I watched a movie about an hour or so after I installed it last night.

I can totally understand that there NEEDS to be some disk space on the iPad or iPhone... however the movie was crapping out at the end and I had 4 GB free at the time, I should have just downloaded the movie played it and deleted it... which I think I will be doing from now on, until Apple Fixes this so called "Streaming."

I have the same issue booth on my ipad air as on my iphone. Meanwhile i have already more then 30 gig on "other storage" due to this.

If i download the movie from the cloud and then watch it i have no probs (i can delete movie), but if i want to stream and doesn't watch till the end the gigs of the movie that i watched comes in "other storage". Didn't find any solution but i'm glad that it is a problem from the ios.

Hopefully there will be a solution soon.

I was able to recreate this "issue" by streaming small portions of my purchased movies on my iPhone 5s.

I subsequently confirmed that partial m4v and plist files were downloaded and stored in the /media/cloudassets directory.

It's not clear to me exactly how long these cached files would (or should) remain once they are no longer being accessed.

At any rate, I was able to see these files and then delete them using:

http://www.ibrowseapp.com/

This is a Freeware application by the makers of iExplorer. Keep in mind that this is an application you install on your PC or MAC, not an app that you run on your iOS device.

Pretty cool little application to have when you need it - especially since it's free. I tried both the PC and MAC versions and was able to use it with both my 5s and iPad 2. Word of caution: I would be very carefull when "manually" deleting files with this type of under-the-hood-utility. I personally wouldn't attemp to delete or alter any directory structures, etc.

Anyway, for those of you with limited storage I hope this helps! While somewhat nerdy, I think this is better approach than the whole backup and restore process.

Finally, having said all of this, I'm not entirely convinced this is a real problem. That is, it seems reasonable that a moderate chunk of a 4 GB movie would get cached for fast access. The real question is how long does the operating system hang on to these files before envoking some sort of garbage collection to reclaim the storage space?

I am having the same exact problem on my iPad 2. I have a bunch of movies I purchased on iTunes and I am afraid to watch them until this is fixed because my unused storage (usage) is now very low. I can only delete movies that I downloaded ... not the movies I streamed. I don't have this problem with Amazon Video or Ultraviolet. I have started buying movies from those companies instead ... and I can watch them on my 2 Roku boxes too.

I have the same issue.

It seems to be very easily reproducible.

On iPhone 5S, I had ~14gb of free space. After streaming 5 minutes of "Man of Steel" from iTunes/videos, my free memory dropped to around 11gb. I have searched and tried all the conventional ways to free memory (short of 3rd party apps) and I cannot recover that memory without a restore.

What type of computer are you using? Apple has been less than helpful on this, and yes it is very reproducible. Save yourself the trouble and don't restore your system. What type of computer(s) do you have? I have found that on Windows, iPhoneBrowser has been a saint to be able to get in and delete the streamed data. It is very simple. I can get you more detailed instructions if you need them.
