Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use. Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits syncing only by iCloud. Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes. I don't want to use iCloud. Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

Yep, I've also noticed this feature and would appreciate hearing about any work arounds. Unfortunately, this was not mentioned in the Ars Technica review of Mavericks I read before "upgrading". Had it been, I would still be on Mountain Lion. Forcing users to use iCloud is not a wise move given reports that Apple is being required to supply information to the NSA.

Hi everybody

Same trap here in france were you can find 20 pages of rejecting advice on this policy on the site Macge.com. A lot of my friends (apple owner) have returned under ML.

Recently I stupidly decided to accept the situation because I really need to Sync my iPhone and my MbPro and this morning, surprise, surprise, I am very pleased to find that iCloud made a duplicate of one of my calendars.
I join the screen capture in order make you share this.

There are no work arounds that I have found. This change was readily apparent to me after upgrading and I too, with many others are not happy about it! Being FORCED to use Icloud is unacceptable. However I too need sync capability so I am stuck unless Apple makes a change.

You can see discussion on this in Itunes and Maverick

Hi,

I am really disapounted with the obligation to use icloud for using Calendar, I feel MAC is going worse...

Probably due to my Internet conection (Sattelite) Calendar is very very slow after updating to marevich. Impossible to work on it. And it is primordial for me for my work. I was about to get an iphone to avoid sync problems with other phones but not it does'nt even work on my pc !!

I am really dispareted.

Any solution ?

I found a hocky solution. Go to your calendar in your iphone and itouch, and delete them. Then add the same calendar names to yoru calendar again. Then go to your calendar and export each calendar that you want synced with your iphone or itouch calendar on your desktop. Email the calendars to yourself. open your email, and click on each attachment so they are downloaded. Once downloaded it gives you an option to downloaded all. Select download all. You can also just chose the entries that you want download, if you don't want to download 8 years worth of entries like I did.

I did the same thing for my contacts, but this time I only exported my new contacts, so I didn't have to delete anything. I exported the new contacts that I had added to my Macbook Pro on my desktop. Then I emailed them all to myself. Then I clicked on each contact to download them. Once they were downloaded, I went to the bottom of the page and chose add new contact.

For now that is the best way I know how to get around icloud. I hope this helps you.

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.

I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do not want that either.

I chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can no longer do that.

Whoever made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by this.

I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.

In the meantime - thanks for the work around

We live off the grid sometimes and I need to sync by cable. Nobody at our local Apple Store was aware of the changes with Maverick. In fact they told me I would be able to do a cable sync before I upgraded. So, after doing the upgrade to Maverick and finding out the hard way, the geniuses took my computer back to Snow Leopard. It wasn't a smooth process, but after 6 days and many hours at the genius bar, I'm back in business. Apple needs to do a better job communicating to their technicians in the stores. And hopefully they'll re-think the decision to move everyone to the cloud. Not everyone wants to use it. I'm seriously looking at moving back to windows. Very seriously.

"Host your own CalDAV and CardDAV servers"

Thank you for the thought but that is sooooo beyond what my simple computer capabilities allows me to feel comfortable doing. Apple did this so that we will all be forced to use iCloud and pay for this use. The glory of Apple has been its simplicity and logical integration with devices. It behoves me to see Apple go down this sleazy path.

No, they did this because SyncServices was a crappy system full of problems. CalDAV and CardDAV are much simpler and open source.
