Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use. Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB cable from my MacBook Air to my iPhone and iPad and permits syncing only by iCloud. Mountain Lion permitted this via the Info tab on iTunes. I don't want to use iCloud. Any ideas with Maverick on how to sync Address Book and Calendar from computer to iPhone and iPad without using iCloud?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

I admit ignorance concerning what a Dav system is? I said basically, not my first rodeo, not that I was a computer stystems engineer. 😉Just older and been doing this stuff before there were disk drives or even floppies and keeping up more than the average bear in my peer group. Reason I switched from MSFT based systems to Apple is simply I tired of the hobby of fixing computers daily. Tired of devoting more time getting computer to work than actually doing the work.

I don't honestly know if Apple themselves ever used the sync word but I do know they want you to think of a big server somewhere as a floating cloud above our heads between Earth and God. Oh wait I do know! " could prevent iCloud Calendar from displaying and syncing properly." From that very Apple document I put in link concerning calendars. Perhaps that is why I assumed icoud was syncing. I really don't know if storing and pushing synching or whatever. I do know they promised MAGIC and not really so far. Better than ME at least. If not MAGIC yet they should have allowed manually sync to co-exist.

OK.

A Dav system consists of a remote database (iCloud in this case) and its clients (Calendar, Contacts etc). Sync, in the traditional manner (comparing one set of data to another and changing both until they match) doesn't exist.

When you enter data in Calendar (for example) your entry is pushed to the server, it is then displayed at iCloud.com and on any CalDav clients (there are a few in addition to Apple), as all the data is entered on and read from the single iCloud database there is no sync, and no conflicts.

Locally cached copies are kept so that the clients may be used offline, changes made during the offline period are pushed at the next connection.

Provided data entry is done in the correct account (iCloud, not On My Mac or any other that can be added to the Calendar app on your Mac or an IOS device) the system is extremely simple, ensuring that you are using the correct account in any client should be verified, and the defaults set accordingly.

Calendar uses the CalDav protocol and Contacts uses the CardDav protocol.

So then if I am understanding correctly, the old manual plug iTunes plug in a truer sync in that it did compare one file to another and then replace using newer date version?

And then how does theCloud server manage to push an entry to two of three devices when all devices have cloud and all calendars checked?

How can an event created on desktop be pushed to cloud then pushed to two mobile devices yet not appear on the original calendar when all icloud calendars are checked?

How do birthdays originally created on desktop vanish there, yet remain on other mobile devices with no revisions even having been made at any location?

Black Magic hahaha see it is Magic

All this is going to give me a headache sooner or later. Have a great weekend what is left of it.

No, it's a sync (with all the attendant conflict issues) and iCloud is not.

All devices are looking at the same calendar, just like you and 3 friends looking through my window will see the same thing.

It can't, so I think your observations are wrong on this one.

Which account (you have more than one) did you put the Birthday calendar in?

Black Magic hahaha see it is Magic

You can look at it that way if you want.

Csound1, Good morning

Let's take just the one issue. You say it can't I said it did. I really woud like to get to the bottom of this whether my problem or theirs.

Early 2008 24" deskop running Maverick OSX 10.9.2

Ipad MC706LL/A 7.1

IPhone 5S 7.1

All updates current

Desktop calendar 7.0 checked HOME CALENDAR BIRTHDAYS US HOLIDAYS

Ipad calendar checked ( Icloud ) ALL ICLOUD HOME CALENDAR US HOLIDAYS ( subscribed ) US HOLIDAYS ( other ) US HOLIDAYS BIRTHDAYS Show decline events OFF

Iphone calendar checked ( Icloud ) ALL ICLOUD HOME CALENDAR ( other ) US HOLIDAYS BIRTHDAYS Show decline events OFF

INCIDENT:

On desktop Apple Mail

Recieve email from a management company listing two dates April 6 and April 7

open box on April 6 select CREATE EVENT enter event name, do same for April 7

Go to calendar neither event appears. REPEAT PROCESS same result. Nothing appears in desktop calendar.

Open Ipad calendar surprised to see that both events appear there!

Open Iphone celendar again both events appear there!

Return to Desktop neither event appears there.

Now you said can't happen, must be my observations. But it did happen just as I just described and remains the same. I have not tried to replicate to see if I can duplicate the result. I will do that now.

I can replicate - Sent myself email to main email address from my web gmail with a date. Recieved it via Apple Mail. Opened dialog box on date CREATE EVENT, desktop calendar NOTHING! Both Ipad and Iphone calendars have entry posted!!!

Now playing some more here is yet another piece. If I add a time to the date and create IT DOES APPEAR in DESKTOP as well as other devices. The key appears to be whether or not a time is included with date. No time no desktop entry, appears everty where else. Time appears everywhere.

In which account, you omitted it from this one.

Open which box?

When run mouse pointer over date contained in email date become box highlighted with upside down triangle, click on triangle and box opens with the details and DETAILS - CANCEL - ADD TO CALENDAR

Also HOME calendar is the default and all entries are made in HOME

OK, I don't get that option at all so I can't test any further, Sorry.

That's it what happened to my observations must be wrong can't happen. I take it that my checked calendars etc meet approval. I'm disappointed after you were so sure it must be me couldn't be them. I stick to my comment that 99% of the time IT IS THEM!

Oh well moving on. Someday THEY will fix hopefully.

Thanks for taking time attempting an explanation/fix ...
