Logitech C615 webcam HD video recording issues in OS X 10.9 Mavericks

I just sent the following bug-report to Apple regarding HD video-recording using a Logitech C615 webcam in OSX 10.9.

I was hoping that others with similar simptoms would find this thread and confirm that this problem exists.

My bug-report sent to Apple:

Summary:

After recently upgrading to OS X 10.9, I am no longer able to record high quality video using my Logitech C615 webcam.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Attach a Logitech C615 webcam to any USB-port.

2. Open QuickTime Player and select File -> New Movie Recording.

3. Try to record a 1080p (maximum quality) video.

4. The video-recording should be interrupted and the application should freeze after only a few seconds.

The problem also occurs in any other application that can record webcam video at 1080p quality.

Expected Results:

Before upgrading from OS X 10.8, I was able to record a 1080p video without any problems.

Actual Results:

When trying to record a 1080p video using QuickTime Player in OS X 10.9, the application freezes after only a few seconds of recording. Also, I have noticed that the CPU usage goes straight to 100% - something that did not happen when I was using OS X 10.8.

The problem does not seem to be limited to QuickTime Player. When (for instance) using Logitech's latest "Logitech Webcam Software", I experience problems that cause the video-recording to stop unexpectedly, which in turn courses the application to hang/freeze.

I have yet to find an application that is able to record the webcam video in HD quality without eventually hanging/freezing in OS X 10.9, which leads be to conclude that this must be a problem with the built-in driver for Logitech webcams in OS X 10.9, which is also why I have chosen to report this bug in the "OS X" category.

I have just tried making a new (clean) installation of OS X 10.9, but the problem still persists.

I hope that You will be able to fix this issue as soon as possible, as it has made it impossible for my company to continue recording our videos.

Version:

OS X 10.9 (13A603)

Notes:

I have already spent a lot of effort searching for other users with similar problems, but I have been unable to find anything yet - which is why I chose to send this bug-report.

I am using the Logitech HD C920.

I think the new Mavericks is not just affecting the ability to record via Quicktime X but any ther app for recording from your webcam etc... I tried VLC and same thing it crashes..... I am a toy designer and just started teaching some online sculpting classes and this issue is affecting my schedule 😟

I really hope Apple will come up with some kind of patch , you are the only other person on earth having the same issue as myself... so far.

I'm having issue with c920 and Skype. I can see the video in the Preview (under preferences) for a second, but screen will go black, blue lights on webcam go out. If I place a call, nothing.

I am also getting same issue with built in iSight camera. Freezes and light goes out during Skype call.

Same issue in Photobooth.

Running all updated software in Mavericks on late 2012 iMac.

The same here. I'm using Logitech c920 on OS X 10.9.1 and after 2-3 seconds of recording Quicktime or Photo Booth freezes.

Built-in iSight seem to work for me though... maybe because I'm having MBP 17 late 2009 which has lower resolution iSight.

Interestingly, when I boot to Mountain Lion I have no problems to record with c920, works flavlessly.

Seems to me the problem is in Mavericks with HD webcams.

FYI, maybe you've tried this already but after doing the following I was at least able to make some longer HD recordings with c920 on Mavericks (still veeeeery clammy, on screen camera picture stays about 4-5s behind movements, but at least QT or PB did not totally freeze):

1. Resetting NVRAM (helped)

2. Resetting SMC (no affect)

Just be aware before resetting those that some preferences are to to be cleared and re-set.

See Resetting SMC - any risks or drawbacks?

I've also reported this as bug to Apple, no solution yet.

Meanwhile, I've noticed that whenever recording with C920 the Apple Video Framework API related process "VTDecoderXPCService" is hogging 30-40% of the CPU. I suspect, but not sure, that this issue may be related to 10.9 Video Framework API, in which case it may affect about any application that uses this API with your C920.

For many years I have been successfully using your Logitech C910 Webcam on a Mac with OSX 10.6.8. Now I am using Mac Yosemite as my OS.

Although Yosemite recognizes and records with the C910 in Quicktime 10, Quicktime constantly stops recording after a short period. This does not happen when using the inbuilt iSight camera (which is not nearly as good in many ways as Logitech .... but of course you know this already).

I downloaded the old software (for OSX 10.6.8) but Yosemite will not let me install this.

Because I am recording videos almost every day, I need to get the webcam to work. The C910 is the best webcam for my work.

Can you help me with a workaround or other solution? I will be most grateful for anything you can point out to get me recording happily. Even if you have a beta software version, I will be happy to try that and give you feedback.
