No sound on iPad 3 after iOS 7 update.

After upgrading my third-generation iPad to iOS 7 (now running 7.0.3), no sound comes out of the speakers. Now, I have to use headphones. Apple says it's a hardware issue, but as soon as I upgraded to 7, the speakers died. Does anyone have a solution? Between myself and the "Geniuses" at Apple, we have tried all of the usual stuff (restart, reset, reset all settings, etc). The only thing Apple suggested is that I buy a new iPad (imagine that). I feel like this happened on purpose so that I would buy a new device. I didn't purchase AppleCare when I bought the iPad in March 2012, and I feel like Apple is purposefully going after those people without care plans and disabling their devices in some small but important way when we download the iOS 7 update (Plenty of people online have complained of the same thing that has happened to my device.). Further, Apple refuses to roll back my iPad to a previous OS...they've covered their bases and they're hoping we don't fight back while they work to keep this ridiculous (in my opinion, manufactured) glitch out of public discussion. So...any ideas on fixing the device rather than replacing it at cost?

I have been having a similar problem. 3rd generation iPad that stopped playing sound out of the blue. None of the solutions here have worked for me. The weird thing is is that many things DO play sound for me, though. YouTube works just fine through the app, but a video embedded in any other app won't play sound. Most of the time, sound doesn't worm, but there are several apps that will play sound. One of which is my Too Noisy app that I use in my classroom. When my kids are too loud, it plays a very loud alarm sound. I can't figure out why some work and others don't.

Also, I do not have an air play option, which is strange, because I thought it was available on 3rd gen or later?

Curious to see if there is a solution.

Hello CorneliusMac... I fell your frustration. Actually, I used to receive lots of emails from people who downloaded our Apps complaining about sound - so, I started investigating this issue... as a result I've made a video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDf1LDcE95Q

It is short (1m36 sec), watch it entirelly. As I read from your post, you seem to have tried what is shown in the initial 42 seconds... but maybe you didn't try the second part:

- closing all running apps (then, wait 20 seconds... the system can take a while to reeeeally close every app you told to close)

- reboot the iPad, the forced way (it keeps everything in your iPad in place, don't worry)

This should solve the 'software side'.

I don't know if you played with AirPlay, or used the docking connector with some external speakers, of if you may have moisture/dirt even on the dock connector or in the headphones connector - those can interphere in the sound (people report having the iPad constantly in 'headphones mode', for example)... those issues are harder to fix... try to insert and remove the plugs, use a soft brush to clean the dock connector, etc...

Hi corneliusmac,

I have the same problem with my ipad 3rg gen running ios 7.0.4, My sound only comes when i plug my headphones i went through all the suggestions and only one suggestion worked but therealso one strange thing happened ,

somebody has suggested to go into settings > music > sound check on,

I tried this and magically it worked, You guys have no idea how good i felt but, after i played one song (speakers were working perfect), the sound jus vanished again,

THIS cannot be a hardware issue because if the sound was there fr 5min how can it disappear all of a sudden, also when i press my volume button it shows sound effects, it use to show soundeffects before also until i tried the sound check suggestion, in that brief moment when i had sound on my ipad the volume button actually showed volume and the bar & not sound effects, also The sound bar is missing from the control center if you notice this is a software bug for sure but i dont know what to do now 😟,Hope you find a solution man

Thank you very much "EversonFromSaoPaulo". Like others, I have an iPad 3 (with the latest iOS updates) and similar problems: Speaker audio worked fine on "YouTube", etc. and there was normal audio with a headphone, but I had no speaker audio on videos embedded elsewhere; likewise, there was no clicking sound when I took photos. I tried all the suggestions mentioned thus far. None worked. But, thank you very much, yours did! I hope your suggestion helps "corneliusmac" and others as well.

Hi I have the same problem, but have fixed it by going to 'settings' 'general' on the main screen halfway down 'multitasking gestures' toggle the tick onto the lock screen line from the 'mute' line. Sound now works normally again but downside is that the screen is locked , which I can live with. Lesson learned on being too quick to upgrade next time. Hope this works for you , did for me .

I was able to solve my problem via the method shown on "EversonFromSaoPaolo's" YouTube (see December 17th post at 3:53am above) WITHOUT LOCKING MY SCREEN.

In "settings", I have it on "Mute" rather than "Lock Rotation", while the tab immediately above the volume lever on the right side of my iPad is in the up position -- i.e. covering up the RED DOT (as also shown in the YouTube video I mentioned).

As a result, my audio works fine and my screen is NOT locked. Try this and see if it works.

I also have the sound problem on an ipad2. Namely some apps have sounds, some apps don't have sounds. However if I plug in a headphone, then all apps have sound.

Your solution works (set side-switch to mute). All the other ones in this thread didn't work. Even rebooting didn't work.

Thanks.

It is clearly a software issue, is apple still refusing to fix it?

I had the same problems that almost everyone in the post had. I also tried ALL solutions specified on this post. What finally worked for me is going into one of my apps where i have changed the sound in the past.

In my specific case it it a mobage game, Flutter with inapp settings to adjust sound.

FIX:

I closed all the open apps, rebooted the ipad 3 and then opened the app, increased the volume in the in-app settings an Viola! All ipad sound returned. Keysounds, music via the ipad speakers etc.

It seems that some apps can override the system sound settings and functionality!!!

Hope this helps someone else too.

GUYS FIX IT BY SIMPLY:

Go to Settings > General > ( now make sure that the "Slide Switch" is operating the "locking rotation" of your screen and not operating as the "Mute" button )

The little Slide button on your Ipad can control both your sound and your Ipad´s screen rotation if the switch is ON and is operating as a "Mute" button ( located in Settings > General ) then you have no sound in some applications,

Other then that you can always reset the device as mention in one of the very first posts by holding 2 buttons at the same time.

Other option is going to the route folder ( where all files are of Ipad ) and delete the file, this is also mention somewhere here.

Thanks
