Kernel Panics in brand new Retina MBP running Mavericks

Hello!

So I recently purchased a new MBP from the most recent updated line. It's less than a week old, and was purchased to replace another MBP that had serious hardware issues and near constant kernel panics. After waiting months for the updated line to once again have a working laptop, I'm quite dismayed that tonight I have experienced two kernel panics that have crashed an restarted my new computer. During both panics, I was running both Chrome and VLC. The first happened as I clicked the Chrome icon in the dock and the second one happened right after I started playing a video in VLC and went into fullscreen. Unfortunately there are no available appointments at the Genius Bar tomorrow, and I won't be able to book an appointment I can actually make it to until next weekend. I was hoping someone might be able to offer me some insights into what might be causing this?

Here's the info:

Update: 24 hours since reinstalling per GBA's suggestion and no kernel panics.

Interestingly enough, I went to reinstall via the app store, first, and got the message "Alert: You cannot install OS X Mavericks on this computer."... Initially, I believed this to be apart of the corrupt installation itself. I did a clean reinstallation using internet recovery (I wiped my drive completely, I didn't even reinstall from the recovery partition) and then used a backup to manually migrate my data (did not use TM setup assistant, migrated no system files, etc).

It turns out that the 11,3 model houses a special build of OS X Mavericks that is not compatible with the app store's current version of Mavericks. Thus, the only way to reinstall OS X on this model, currently, is from fetching it via OSX recovery. I assume this will be addressed when 10.9.1 is released.

This may also account for the kernel panic issue. Both machines were set up using set-up assistant, which does migrate certain components of System files/OS X more generally, some of which were incompatible with this machine. GBA, does this sound plausible?

Nov 30, 2013 5:38 PM in response to nbar

yes, that sounds plausible.

There have been other reports of "Mavericks is not compatible with this Mac" that are explained by the new Mac shipped with a much higher (custom) build number than the standard build available in the App store. [But getting it by Recovery worked fine.]

There are LOT and LOTS of folks complaining indirectly about incompatible stuff carried forward ... usually in the form of, "my battery life is garbage, what is this new Mavericks junk..." and similar complaints that, if you read between the lines, are indications that old stuff (maybe Applications, add-ons, or just stray preferences) is interfering with the new version of Mac OS X.

Any idea what it means? I've noticed that it seems to happen specifically on the wifi network where I work if I lose the connection while the macbook is asleep. For example, if our network goes down (which is a common occurence) the laptop will wake up with the "You need to restart..." message. It's happened maybe 4 or 5 times since I bought it.

Now on my third model. I reproduced the panic over airplay to my Apple TV repeatedly (playing an mp4 video on quicktime). As of two days using the third model (exchanged from a different Apple Store), I cannot reproduce the panic. I am convinced the Apple Store where the first two models came from (Suburban Square, Philadelphia PA) were shipped a 'bad batch' of this model- specifically related to the dynamics graphic controller. At any rate, I chatted with support- they escalated the case to senior engineering regarding the first two machines. Engineering was in contact with me and said it was "plausible" that a bad batch had been shipped to the specific store, but are further evaluating. I submitted a RADAR reported as well-yet to here back, though I won't be able to share any reply on the forums (I think) due to the NDA.

-Thoroughly dissapointed with the first two 2600$ dollar machines. Unnacceptable that any hardware defects so apparant wouldn't be caught beforehand.

-Thoroughly impressed with Apple's customer service on multiple levels and responsiveness to the situation (also, thoroughly impressed with now, the third machine).

-Will post any updates in the days to come.

Good question. All I know is that the wifi router we're using -- according to the IT guy -- has too many connections on the 2.4GHz band which apparently causes problems with Macs connecting on the 5GHz band. I'm not sure how accurate his explanation was but that's what we were told. As far as the DNS goes I'm not sure. I've taken nbar's suggestion and added Google's DNS addresses. I'll try my laptop again at work and see how it goes. Thanks for the help!

Not wanting to turn this into a Windows vs Mac thread, but I am a recent windows convert.

Love my new laptop (hardware wise) but I have never had so many crashes (ive been using PCs for 20 years) since now. I'm putting it down to Mavericks being new, but I must have at least one crash a day. Honestly can't remember the last time windows crashed on me (not since 7 or 8 anyway). My friend who also bought the same laptop is experiencing the same (and he returned his once already).

Really surprised how application crashes can take down the entire OS. Other than that, I'm getting on quite well, still little things are a pain, and long winded but im sure I'll work out the keyboard shortcuts.

The only thing which really annoys me is how drives are mounted in the OS. If you loose an external disk for any reason, upon a remount the label is renamed by a incremented numeric. This breaks certain applications who point to a drive by name. Guess I'll have to create a dynamic mount point but shouldn't have to!

glenh8-

Your experience of a kernel panic a day is completely opposite most Mac OS X users' experience. Typical Mac OS X machines run continuously for months without issue, sleeping when not used for a while.

Kernel panics are not ONE problem, but as many as hundreds of different problems, with additional subtle variations. You have complained, but have not yet posted a panic log on this thread for analysis.

"Losing" an external drive is something that should not be happening at all, ever. You risk losing ALL the data when this happens, as the working copy of the Directory does not get copied back to the Drive unless the drive is properly ejected.

I recommend you not spend time on a work-around, but instead directly address the reason for premature disconnect. If these drives are Bus powered, I recommend you stop using them until you can get stable external power supplies for them.

Happy to see I'm not the only one. Just bought new 2.6Ghz, Retina with 1Tb SSD and get a kernel panic a day. Usually with VLC but also in the middle of the night when it's sitting idle I wake up to 'this mac encountered a problem and was restarted...'.

My old 2011 non-retina MacBook never had any issues at all with VLC so this issue may be graphics driver related.

10.9.1 just got released so I'll see how it goes, I'm hopeful that this appears to not be a hardware related issue and more driver/software related.
