iMac (Late 2013) 27" i7 Haswell constant crashing with 32GB RAM

I have Crucial 4x 8GB DDR3L (dual voltage 1.35/1.5 v) RAM sticks and it is very unstable! If I reduce to two sticks i.e. 16GB the system is stable. I have tried them in different orders, but every time I have 32GB in, it crashes at least every couple of hours. Any order of RAM at 16GB is fine.

Have performed Apple Diagnostics + RAM memtest and nothing appears the matter.

Anyone else with ideas or experincing similar issues? I have installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp and running with VirtualBox, but the crashes were happening on the iMac just out of the box with nothing installed with the 32GB in.

Yes, all modules report okay. Also this was happening before I used USB3 Buffalo HD-GDU3 DriveStation. Again, there appear to be no issues if RAM is taken down to 16GB.

I've ensured they are securly installed / pushed in.

I'm currently using slots 1 & 3 (DIMM1) going from the top. I guess I could try running from slots 2 & 4 (DIMM0) to see if that makes a difference.

I would review the small manual that came with your iMac regarding memory. Also, here is a search at Apple for “2013 iMac.” Particularly, the memory specifications document may be informative.

If there is an Apple store within a reasonable distance, you should consider setting an appointment to walk in with your iMac. Not convenient, but at some point of frustration, necessary.

I take it that the first 16GB came from Apple, and not third-party sourced?

Nov 3, 2013 8:38 AM in response to VikingOSX

Unfortunately the manual is not that helpful. I purchased from Crucial, probably one of the best known and reputable of all the third-party RAM sources.

All RAM configurations - working and non-working - came from Crucial. I only ordered 8GB with my iMac – which I've just put to one side.

Looked at this guide telling of the Memory specifications: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5908 – the Memory supplied by Crucial meets all the criteria.

I too am having the same issues. This is my first Apple product and am a little disappointed a product right out of the box is not working perfectly. I am running Mavericks which was installed onto a brand new configuration as "shaunumb". Black screen, reboot. I think it has something to do with a video driver but not sure.

Nov 6, 2013 11:57 PM in response to shaunumb

We are having the same isues. We bought 2 brand new 27" iMacs (late 2013), upgraded to 32GB ram and they both do the same thing. There is no chance our ram is non-working because I had the same set-up on my older iMac and it was working fine (even on Mavericks).

Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core i5

Memory 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB

Software OS X 10.9 (13A603)

Brand new, straight out of the box and it crashes every few hours.

Nov 7, 2013 5:06 AM in response to shaunumb

So last night I disconnected my external hard drives along with my Boston Acoustic speaker system from the headphone plug. I then installed the new iTunes update that came out last night. Used the iMac for about an hour with no crash. Reconnected my external hard drives and used it for another 2+ hours with still no crash. I am leaving the speaker system disconnected. We will see.....

Nov 7, 2013 5:20 AM in response to shaunumb

I'm having the exact same issues! Setup below:

27-inch, Late 2013

Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Software OS X 10.9

Memory 32GB Crucial RAM

I too am a web designer and cannot afford to spending time on trying to make a £3000 brand new machine work! I have already returned RAM another brand of RAM believing it was faulty.... now I am wondering if it was the RAM or is something else?

Nov 7, 2013 5:30 AM in response to shaunumb

Hey gyus,

did you read this? https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5500080?answerId=23582522022#23582522022

"The answer to this (and for anyone else that stumbles into the same issue) is the kingston modules you have are not compatible with the late 2013 iMacs, the new iMacs require 1.35v modules rather than 1.5v

We've had several machines with the same issue and didn't realise until contacting Kingston.

The correct modules from Kingston for these machines are:

http://www.kingston.com/us/memory/search/Default.aspx?DeviceType=2&Mfr=APP&Line= iMac%20Intel%20Core%20i5/i7&Model=85755&Description=Kingston_System_Specific_Me m ory_for_APP_iMac_Intel_Core_i5/i7_Apple_-_iMac_Intel_Core_i5/i7_27-inch_%28Late _ 2013%29"

Nov 7, 2013 6:07 AM in response to dvanula

Yeah - initially I used the 1.5v. Apple support chat adviser said it should be fine with that RAM so I assumed it was bad and sent it back.

I am now using 1.35v Crucial RAM and still having issues when 32GB RAM is used.

Whilst it is possible that the new RAM includes a bad stick, it just seems a bit odd that a few people are having the same issue with different brands of ram and only when they use 32GB.

There's a couple of comments over on the Crucial forum boards too.

I wondering if the issue occurs when you use all four dimm slots... if this is the case, does anyone know what the resolution would be (firmware update, hardware replacement etc).

Nov 10, 2013 7:55 AM in response to shaunumb

Hi, same problem here with a new late 2013 imac with 32GB of RAM from crucial, part number: CT102464BF160B. This slots meets the criteria for this imac, and have been fully working during 8 months in the previous late 2012 imac (model 13,2).

In the crucial website now there is an other model of RAM (CT4951621) that says "Guaranteed-compatible with the Apple iMac (27-inch, Late 2013)", but the specifications are the same.

Can anyone tell me if there is some wrong in this panic log? Thanks so much.

I have the same problem.

I bought a brand new 27 Imac (late 2013)

After installing 32GB of ram my Imac is very unstable.

Have tried everything before, removing software, hardware etc.

Then run memtest and it gives an error on the last test. (walking ones)

When I test with only 2 modules 16GB no problem whatsoever.

My memory is Corsair CMSO16GX3M2A1600C11

On Amazon this memory is highly recommended from other Mac users.

I have tested every memory module the whole day.

There are no problems when I use max 16GB.

Memtest gives no problems, no more crashes.

But when I max out the system to 32GB I have a very unstable system.

For now I only use 16GB, hopefully there will be an solution soon for this problem.

Such a shame. I have wasted over 3 days (in total probably around 30 hours or so) on this issue (looking for fixes, re-doing work I lost when it crashes).

I spoke to Apple chat support and to be honest, I am not even sure it was a real person... I think it may be some really good Artificial Intelligence (like when you call up... the Artificial intelligence on the phone system is flawless). Anywhoo, after a couple of chats suggesting it was the RAM and that I could try to reset NVRAM, run hardware diagnostics etc etc, I didn't really have a clear answer.

Last night it crashed twice and I got fed up. I called Apple today and it is getting returned. I don't know if the issue is with the 3rd Party vendors making false claims that their RAM is 100% compatible or if it is Apple's issue with some kind of hardware/software bug, but i'm not going to let it continue being my issue!

Once it has been returned, I am going re-order and max it out with Apple's overpriced RAM. Then, Apple have nothing to fall back on as it will be all of their hardware and software. It's such a shame that in the drive to gain a bigger audience, the quality of their proiducts/software is slowly slipping. They would be better off charging more of a premium for some very very high quality stuff (like they used to).
