iMac (Late 2013) 27" i7 Haswell constant crashing with 32GB RAM

I have Crucial 4x 8GB DDR3L (dual voltage 1.35/1.5 v) RAM sticks and it is very unstable! If I reduce to two sticks i.e. 16GB the system is stable. I have tried them in different orders, but every time I have 32GB in, it crashes at least every couple of hours. Any order of RAM at 16GB is fine.

Have performed Apple Diagnostics + RAM memtest and nothing appears the matter.

Anyone else with ideas or experincing similar issues? I have installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp and running with VirtualBox, but the crashes were happening on the iMac just out of the box with nothing installed with the 32GB in.

From what i've seen, the only common thing is using 32GB of non-apple RAM on the new iMac (2013). I've seen people complain of the problem with the i5, i7, 755m, 780m, SSD's, HDD's.

Some links below to more people experiencing the same issues.

You can add my new 2-week old iMac to the same list :

27-inch, Late 2013

Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Software OS X 10.9 - Mavericks

Memory 32GB Crucial RAM ( CT4951612 )

500Gig SSD

I checked & read a lot concerning the RAM options and thought Crucial would be the best bet.

I've done Memtest with 2 cycles, twice. No error showed up, not once.

All modules report OK in System Utilities & config.

I'm having crashes every once in a while. Sometimes 2 times a day, sometimes a couple of days in between.

Mostly these happen when I'm not working and while the Mac is in sleep mode. When I wake it up I get the startup login screen and a crash report when logged in.

I haven't contacted Apple yet, but I'm tempted to at least report the issue so they have another use case.

I tend to believe that it's not the RAM but Mavericks which is a little buggy at release. I've read about the GTX 780M as a possible cause, Chrome is having some issues ( some processes in Activty Monitor that are not responding ) and some Adobe software as well is causing issues.

There is not a lot to be found on the Apple Forums however.

For now I disabled some Chrome plugins ( Pepper Flash ) to see if that makes a difference and started to use Firefox iso Chrome to see if that keeps the crashes away.

I can post a crash log, should that be of any use...

I also have same problems with late 2013 27" imac.. I first bought Kingston 1,5V 4 x 8GB modules for it. Computer was crashing all the time. Then I returned Kingston modules back to the store and bought Crucial 1,35V modules, but problems continued. I took my imac last week to authorized service and they replaced motherboard. This replacement did not helped at all and computer was still crashing few times in a day with Crucial memory. Guys from the service borrowed me some 1,35V Kingston modules over the weekend and those have been working fine for last few days.

I am now waiting response from Crucial should I return them or do they have some working solution for imac. I have to give Kingston modules back to the service today or buy them, but I would like to get rid of Crucial modules first.

What an absolute pain!

Same situation with me, I tried mine first with 4x8GB Kingston HyperX 1.5v and it was crashing too. I then moved onto 4x8gb Crucial RAM and had the same crashes.

I got fed up and my iMac is being collected tomorrow.

Now I see that someone has contacted Crucial and they've admitted there's a problem on their end 😟

I considered cancelling the return but it has a small amount of yellowing on the bottom of the screen anyway (a common issue on the iMac 2012/2013 displays apparently). I managed to minimise it with the colour calibration and was willing to live with it, but as it's now being collected, I will just return it anyway and re-order.

The question now is whether I re-order it with 32GB of Apple RAM or try a third party again.

Which type of Kingston RAM are you using? I know you said 1.35v but is it CL11?

Nov 12, 2013 8:06 AM in response to shaunumb

Im getting confused with this problem. I just took the Kingston memory modules out from the imac and returned them back to Service where I borrowed them. They installed 1,5V versions instead 1,35V as they said to me at the service and what I stated in the previous post. But anyway it has worked without any issues since last friday.

Kingston memory modules what I lent from the service were 4 x Kingston KTA-MB1600/ 8G 1,5V. But the funny thing is that this was exactly same memory I had in the first place in my imac and computer was crashing few times in a day.

They stated in the service, that after they replaced motherboard it crashed once with Crucial memory while they where transfering data from old HDD to SSD (I asked them to do this upgrade at the same time when they had to open this imac anyway). Maybe it crashed with some other reason and the motherboard replacement fixed this memory issue?

I have now installed Crucial memory modules (4 x 8GB DDR3L - 1600 SODIMM MAC) back on this imac. I'll monitor this for few days and reporting if it's crashing again.

Crucial replied to my email today "I can confirm that the memory kit ordered is 100% compatible." So let's see.

Just a thought.

Any of you guys using Chrome ? I'm thinking there is a link.

If I close chrome (even the new Version 31.0.1650.48 ), I seem to have far less crahes & reboots.

After using Firefox for a couple of days & no issues I used Chrome again ths morning, left it open & had a crash 30mins later...

Perhaps there's a link here or with some plugin Chrome's using.

Same problem here.

iMac 27-inch, Late 2013 - 3,5 GHz Intel Core i7

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Upgraded to 32GB 1600 MHz DDR3 from Crucial.

first 48hours: 6 x Intermitent Crashes and Panic, different applications and situations. Totaly random.

I did RMA the memory, received new one,

first 24 hours: 2 x panic's.

I think I have to RMA the iMac as it unusable and looks like everybody is suffering the same problem.

Thanks

Luis
