iMac (Late 2013) 27" i7 Haswell constant crashing with 32GB RAM

I have Crucial 4x 8GB DDR3L (dual voltage 1.35/1.5 v) RAM sticks and it is very unstable! If I reduce to two sticks i.e. 16GB the system is stable. I have tried them in different orders, but every time I have 32GB in, it crashes at least every couple of hours. Any order of RAM at 16GB is fine.

Have performed Apple Diagnostics + RAM memtest and nothing appears the matter.

Anyone else with ideas or experincing similar issues? I have installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp and running with VirtualBox, but the crashes were happening on the iMac just out of the box with nothing installed with the 32GB in.

Setup:

Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

HDD 1TB Fusion Drive

Hello guys,

I'm having the same issue as many of you... I have a late 2013 27" iMac, Intel Core i7, 3 TB Fusion Drive, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB and 32 GB of RAM from Crucial (part number CT4951621). I used Crucial memory on my old late 2009 21.5" iMac and never had any issue.

I installed the Crucial memory modules on Nov 19th and all went well with no errors. Then I had a kernel panic on Nov 24th and two today. I checked the log, but I have to say I don't really understand it. The crash on Nov 24th happened without me noticing it, I only spotted it in the logs. The first crash of today must have happened when my iMac was sleeping, because when I tried to awake it, I actually had to press the Start Up button. The second crash happened while I was using Safari, watching a video clip on YouTube.

I will keep track of what's going on and see if there's a possible pattern. Although, by what I read it seems to be related to 3rd party memory installed on a late 2013 27" iMac. It doesn't seem to be an issue with iMac itself, but I can be wrong. I really hope I don't have to have my iMac replaced, because I need it for my work!

Cheers,

Valerio

Same problem here.

Yesterday, I've update my 27 iMac (late 2013), 3.5 GHz i7, GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB, 512 GB SSD and Mavericks installed, to 32GB of RAM (Kingston HyperX 4 x 8 GB DDR3 CL9) and the system started to crash. Researched the problem and I thought that the problem was with my Dropbox, because I started to upload a large file right after I reboot the iMac for the first time since I installed the RAM. Read in the Dropbox foruns that the Dropbox version that I was using caused some memory lags and crashes and I updated to the last version. iMac still crashed after an hour of use.

I thought that the problem might be from the RAM, but I was already using 2 x 8 GB HyperX modules from Kingston for several weeks with no problems. I even used the 2 Kingston modules with the stock 8GB Apple RAM in a total of 24 GB without any issue.

When I look closer to the panic log, saw a reference to Google Chrome and I noticed that the iMac crashed when I was using Chrome and watching some videos on YouTube. After some more research, read in another forum that the latest Adobe Flash Player could cause the system to hang and crash when using Chrome. I open Chrome's plugin page and saw that there were two Flash Players plugins running at the same time.

I've disable the Flash plugin and the system is running smoothly since then with no crashes for about 4 hours. It's a shot in the dark, but that could be one of the main reasons for the crashes. Lets see!

Hi Nuferreira,

I tried that also a couple of weeks ago, but I ended up avoiding Chrome all together. I still have issues

once in a while but less frequent now when I no longer use Chrome. Don't know for sure if there's a link all together.

I still keep the Crucial 32Gb in place because I don't wa'nt to fiddle with the RAM modules every other day. Hopefully some fix surfaces soon.

Keep us posted anyway.

I'm still with no crashes in more than 48h with 32GB from Crucial, part CT4951620. Normal use, I don't use Chrome. A pair of USB drives conected.

My panics happened with antoher modules from Crucial, that I bought on February and I've used with the previous imac model during months.

'Ginooken' says he's having issues with the same modules, so it seems that the problem is a ramdom incompatibility issue, and that there's no problems in the modules themself. Anyway, the problem seems to have been resolved by itself here...

Dec 1, 2013 11:25 PM in response to shaunumb

Hello there, I have also the same problem in my IMAC late 2013, 32 gb crucial memory and some ramdons kernel panics. I went to the genius bar with the IMAC and they say every was ok after a fast test. Also I talked with crucial and they told me some recomendation about NVRAM but also did not work.

I have another IMAC 2011 with 16gb crucial memory without panics!

I have also a IMAC 27 late 2013. I also installed 32 gb from crucial, CT8G3S160BM.M16FDD. My system set up is:

I7, 3,5 Ghz, 1 TB Fusion Drive, Gforce 780 GTX, running OSX 10.9

Last kernel panic was after one hour watching ip tv over apple tv. Now I am trying with only 16gb. I will report soon.

Some recomendations??

Thanks!

I have the same problem - IMac Late 2013, 27", i7 Haswell, Crucial 32GB etc although I am on OS 10.7.5 and haven't upgraded yet due to reported problems with Mavericks and Cubase 7. My Crucial reference is CT2C8G3S160BMCEU.

It first commenced crashing straight after I upgraded the RAM and all I had attached was a CD ROM unit to put on my software.

Apple suggested I put the original RAM back in (no problems) and if that were the case the RAM units from Crucial were possibly faulty, but reading this thread, it does not suggest that this is the case.

I guess await an update from Apple or Crucial...

Good news:

I received a replacement 4x8GB set from Crucial and I haven't had a crash for two days. I have been using the computer entensively for design and development without issue. Here

8GB DDR3L - 1600 SO DIMM

Product number: CT8G3S160BMCEU

Example of the product (UK site): http://uk.insight.com/en-gb/productinfo/computer-memory/0001471943

Hope this has finally put this issue to rest!

Hi, updated information. I've been traveling two weeks, meanwhile I received a new iMac (RMA'd).

Summary. Bought iMac 27” Late 2013 and 32GB from Crucial. Had multiple crash and did multiple tests, I did RMA memory, I did RMA iMac, but unfortunately problem is still happening. MEM ONLY tests pass perfect but NORMAL WORK crash/panic on page faults.

Contacted again Apple Store and they tell me they don't have anything reported as of today.

The best max mem configuration I’ve achieved to work without problems: 24GB (2x8GB Crucial + 2x4GB Apple).

BANK 0/DIMM0 - CRUCIAL 8GB

BANK 1/DIMM1 - CRUCIAL 8GB

BANK 0/DIMM0 - APPLE ELPIDA 4GB

BANK 1/DIMM1 - APPLE ELPIDA 4GB

Working well from Saturday Dec 7th at 19:15 till now monday Dec 9th 12:22.

Differences between the memories to notice, using Tech Tool Pro 7 to output SPD data. By the way, I have no clue about this information is important or not...

Apple Elpida: SPD Revision 1.2 and Partial Array Self Refresh: Yes

Crucial: SPD Revision 1.1 and Partial Array Self Refresh: No

Again contacted Crucial for next step
