iMac (Late 2013) 27" i7 Haswell constant crashing with 32GB RAM

I have Crucial 4x 8GB DDR3L (dual voltage 1.35/1.5 v) RAM sticks and it is very unstable! If I reduce to two sticks i.e. 16GB the system is stable. I have tried them in different orders, but every time I have 32GB in, it crashes at least every couple of hours. Any order of RAM at 16GB is fine.

Have performed Apple Diagnostics + RAM memtest and nothing appears the matter.

Anyone else with ideas or experincing similar issues? I have installed Windows 7 via Bootcamp and running with VirtualBox, but the crashes were happening on the iMac just out of the box with nothing installed with the 32GB in.

Setup:

Processor 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7

Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB

Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

HDD 1TB Fusion Drive

I have been through 3 brand new iMacs in the last 2 months because of this. I can asssure you it is not the iMac, its the maxed out RAM. Mine is from Crucial and i'm on my second batch of 32 GB from them.

iMac stops crashing if I go back to orginal Apple 8 GB RAM.

27-inch iMac

Configuration

• NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5

• 3.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz

• 8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2X4GB

• 512GB Flash Storage

Hi, finally got it solved.

Summary: Got the iMac 27” Late 2013 + 32GB from Crucial on Nov 1st. Multiple crash / tests / suffering when maxed out (32GB). Best workaround 24GB (8 Apple + 16 Crucial). RMA’d the iMac once. RMA'd memories twice. With 2nd RMA received a new "version" which is working perfect (since 48h now). Time to working config: 1 month 25 days.

WORKING (2nd RMA): SKU CT2C8G3S160BMCEU.C16FER

8GB DDR3L-1600 SODIMM MAC

SPD Data Part Number: CT102464BF160B.C16 (Reported by Techtool Pro 7)

NOT WORKING (original+1stRMA): SKU CT2C8G3S160BMCEU.M16FDD

Hope it helps you,

Luis

Luis: is your CT4951620 32GB solution still working without problems?

Jan 2, 2014 4:48 AM in response to JanneN123

JanneN123,

Yes, working perfect since Dec 24th till now (~9 days) without any problem.

Usage: I left the iMac allways On, it goes to sleep when not using it. Wakes up as expected (periodically). Also programmed wake up at night for automated backup. While working on it I tipically end up with multiple programs up (sometimes leaving only 2-3 GB free :-)).

One of my first stress tests that I documented: 258 tasks, 1489 threads, Mail.app, Firefox, Safari, 1Password, Vuze, iTerm, Thunderbird, GraphicConverter, eyeTV, iTunes, Lightroom 5… + 2 x VMWare VM’s (Linux 2GB y Win7 4GB) + Handbreak Ripping a queue of 4 TV Series from DVD + "GPU Test 0.6.1" ... all running simultaneously for a long period of time. No glitch, no problems.

This box is amazing (when 32GB works)

*new edit* forgot to mention, please make sure when you talk to Crucial to ask them for "new version" of the memory. That's what the last representative told me before sending me the second RMA, that they were sending me a new version because they do so when tracking problems. Didn't clarify much more, indeed not a clear statement but the result is that now it works perfect.
