I'm having WiFi connection speed problem with new iPad Air and Airport-extreme 802.11ac.
I can get over 30Mbps download speed with old iPad2 but with new iPad Air, I get only 7 or 8Mbps.
I saw https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5516013 (Slow WiFi on the new iPad Air). He solve the problem by changing the Channel Bandwidth settings on the router but not such setting on airport-extreme 802.11ac.
I had same problem. I restored my iPad air and set it up as a new iPad not from my backup. My backup had even original iPad stuff so I was thinking May be that was causing some issues. It solved my problem and I am getting constant speed, even in the basement. Be careful if you decided to restore and set up as a new iPad, make sure to save your pictures and videos etc otherwise you won't be able to retrieve it.
I just got my new iPad Air to replace my old and trusty 3rd generation iPad (I'm giving it to a good friend). The setup last night from my old iPad backup went flawlessly. However, when I went to Downcast to update my podcasts I couldn't believe the drop in speed! My old iPad did the same downloads in 1/4 of the time of the iPad Air. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router and have no problems with my two iPhone 5's and my AppleTV. Is Apple listening and coming up with a solution to this serious problem? I'm hestiant to give my old iPad away to my friend until this problem is resolved. PLEASE FIX THIS!!!
I solved my problem too. I got a new Apple AirPort Extreme Router to replace my 5+ year ols D-Link DIR-655. It's blazing fast now and downloads much quicker than my old iPad 3 can. This new router is the best!
Not sure if this will help but I was having lots of problems with speed on my iPad Mini Retina.
Fix for me was to ensure that Channel Width for 2.4GHz bgn was set to 20MHz. Not all routers have this config option but if yours does, make sure it is not set to 40MHz.

Do You use a repeater at home for wifi in all/ other rooms?!
Hmm... Is there an Option for that in Fritz!Box (3370)?!
I see only ONE name, if i want to rename my WLAN. I do not see different names.
The Fritz!Box show me ONE WLAN (ID).
But usually in wifi options you can choose any name for the network. You create it by yourself. Fritz - not sur, as i have never used it. May be iti s pre-set there.
We had the same issue with a 4S, all previous iPads have worked great on the 5ghz and iPhone 5's work great. iPad air will not connect to 5ghz.
That means, that you go SLOWER?

I agree with you IPad Air absolutely horrible, slower than the 1 by mile. Have tried resetting everything. Apple fix this product it is worse that a $200 Kindle.

Thanks mega prime. Changing from off to auto immediately doubled the download speed on my new iPad Air!
Update. It is hard to tell if this still works. My iPhone 5 seems to test consistently faster on wifi than iPad Air.
